Same as Pen. But the thing is that although she would have repined for Colin, she would have been faithful. He wanted devotion, when he wasn't offering the same. If push came to shove, they would have had a decent chance of getting along fine and Pen would have been up for it. Much better to have them getting engaged and Debling allowing her to follow her heart, or even dying off screen on his travels and Colin stepping in at that point

@@kikidevine694 But if you're looking for any woman to check the box, why would you take the risk of marrying someone in love with another man knowing you will be leaving her alone for YEARS at a time? But I do get the frustration because him realizing she's unsuitable and rejecting her adds nothing to their arcs. Pen getting everything she wants besides love and rejecting it because love is more important to her would have been character development, however I don't think Debling should have been falling in love with her because then that makes him the better choice. That pits someone who has seen how great you are from the beginning against someone who has taken a decade to notice and want you.

I had a total different take on Lord Debling. He wants a wife who pursues her own passions because he pursues his. Most of the debutantes mold themselves to their needs of their husbands-they would be a poor match to him. He is showing more kindness than most men in that age.
He shielded her from the balloon basket. Thought about how to court Pen with no male relative. Truthfully he was the kind of husband Pen set out to find. One that would value her privacy and treat her kindly.

I don't. I enjoyed the B plots (some more, some less). I was particularly interested in Francesca's plotline, since it will be the prequel of season 6 (if they won't change the order again). I think the scenes between Pen and Colin were always meaningful, they had a role in their story. If they had more, their plot would be either watered down, or very melodramatic. Now the makers found the sweet spot for me. The ending of episode 4 was deserved but not too late.

I feel that Bridgerton’s biggest problem is that it has too few episodes per season while simultaneously trying to develop a lot of side plots to set up future seasons. For me, it doesn’t work well.
I skimmed through season one because I wasn’t that interested in Simon and Daphne’s story so I didn’t mind the 8 episodes but when I got to Kate and Anthony’s season it was killing me. The romance felt so rushed that sometimes I wondered how characters fell in LOVE and weren’t just lusting for each other.
For Pen and Colin I wished I had seen their friendship at its most intimate and fun points and not just “oh we like making snide comments at parties from time to time”. I still enjoyed it but it has not lived up to my expectations and I doubt it will with it moving onto the plot of unmasking Whistledown.

S1 didn't really have that issue if my memory serves me correctly since it was setting the world up yet Simon and Daphne were given lots of time together and pining for each other but S2 and especially S3 are really bad at fleshing the romance out fully and giving the couples the screen time they deserve. His reason for finding a wife isnt love but someone to watch over his estate and who had their own passions so she wouldnt mind staying alone while he went out traveling. So considering that, it makes perfect sense how he acted.
I like the Mondrichs. Unless Benedicts relationship with the widow goes somewhere, I'm not sure what the point of this story is. I also dont like that they are setting Violet up with Lady Danbury's brother. Why can't a widow stay a widow without being paired up with someone? I dont see why Violet can't continue living in the Bridgerton manor...she still has children to look after. And I honestly can't see her with anyone but her husband, Lord Bridgerton. I never read any of the novels so I'm going by what is presented on the show. The thing they should have changed more obviously is Penelope's confidence. She keeps telling her man how undesirable she is and that doesn't make for good romance. If they had shown her to become more confident with his lessons, more glowing with the belief that she is worthy of attention, that would have changed her enough to make him really want her. At it is, the thing he likes most about Penelope is that she appreciates him and believes in him. Cool? I thought he had his mother for that. I think the biggest flaw of this season is the writers' lack of confidence in their female lead.

    • @juliag6126
      @juliag6126 6 месяцев назад +9

Eh, that would've been too cliché. I think this season is all about true authenticity and, especially, identity. Colin has lost his, trying to become what society expects of him because old him was labeled as "lame" for being sensitive. Penelope TRIES to do something similar to please her suitors, but the clothes and her newfound confidence in wearing them don't fundamentally change her and give her the social skills she expected they would. Being a little clumsy is just who she is. Same thing with Francesca and her more introverted nature. The point is that only Colin& Penelope (and maybe his mom, like you pointed out) really know each other's core. And they're comfortable in simply BEING around each other, embarrassing little quirks and all. Ultimately, I think being together will make them both thrive in presenting their true selves to everyone WITHOUT caring if they approve of it or not, instead of becoming completely different people

    (Spoilers btw)
Kent's plot(I say kent because I don't remember their names) was all a waste of time. Not even relevant to the main couple because they have NO connection to either Penelope or Colin(Other than Colin being a patron to the bar).
Benedict's plot is the same plot as every other season, simple and basic. The writers keep saying he needs more development, and yet we haven't learned anything new other than that he drools over some MILF with the "I'm not like the others!" issue.
Violet's plot is cute and really well produced unlike the other two I mentioned, but it wasn't that needed.
The only plots that I think are worthwhile are the Eloise/Cressida and Frannie plots. As someone else said, the Eloise/Cressida plot is already connected to the main couple, so it makes perfect sense for it to be there. Frannie's plot on the other hand is super important to her season, so I loved it too (John Stirling, you'll end me).
I did notice something though, and that is that all the plots have the same pattern of change in common (All the plots are caused by an unexpected change in their lives), the theme of Polin's love story, and HOPEFULLY they will make sense when part 2 comes out🤠

I’m glad about how they did Lord Debling. I was scared I would continue to prefer him over Colin. His purpose in finding a wife was an ick, in the best way. It made me prefer Collin (if only for the last 40 minutes of episode 4). Because Pen deserved love. If it didn’t pan out this way, and he did love and want her, I’d find it hard to be content with her then running back to Collin.
Colin also doesn’t know that he didn’t love her, all he knows is that Debling was going to propose. Not the reason why. So I think from that jealousy perspective it still worked.
I’m also glad Collin didn’t get into any tussles or loud and aggressive scenes over Penelope. This comes from my own preference and Im aware of that but with that said, I hate the way the duke and Anthony act. The ‘and it is not far enough!’ Scene and whatever Hasting’s equivalent was, were totally unattractive to me.
Anthony overall only felt like he had lust for Kate, and the aggressive sniffing wherever she walked in every scene and screaming that he ‘has been struggling to keep composure’ in that specific scene doesn’t help fight that narrative.
Collin was always more polite and loving than his brothers (aka not spending all his time at a whore house, something I look down on the other men in this show for *a lot* and why I was very disappointed with his little threesome.) and that was what made me like him the most. It would also be very out of character and I don’t believe Penelope would find that kind of immaturity attractive either.
I get that people like that kind of protectiveness and obsession, but in this series it shows itself more as childishness and objectification/lust. Collin shows love, respect and compassion for Penelope easily, without embarrassing himself (except when rumour spread of him helping her, I guess).
That was a lot thx for reading 🫶

No, straight up, Debling also implies in his break up speech that if he and Pen were to marry, she would more likely than not cheat on him with Colin the second he went off on his Antarctic tour- which is funny as hell, because _everyone_ can see just how down bad they are for each other, but also so disrespectful??? He gets so cold when she's fishing for his feelings towards developing love later in a marriage, and then jumps to that assumption, and like... where did that characterisation come from???

Thank you. I was wondering. He coldly says he doesn’t know if he could ever love her, but doesn’t want anyone who has affection for another. A little one sided. It was good Penelope got away.

The passion and chemistry between daphne and the Duke in season 1 was honestly the standard ✨ The season focused on their love story so well. It was a bit less focused in season 2, where i felt that too many other things were going on instead of focusing on Anthony and Kate (the sister plot still makes me so uncomfortable EURGHH) but anyways! I was taking season 2 for granted apparently! Because season 3 part 1 is even WORSE. Francesca is a total bore, and a weirdo at best. Her character is so dry i cringed through most of her scenes.
With the bridgerton writers trying to juggle the eloise/cressida arc, Danburys brother and Violet Bridgerton, Francesca's debut and Polin, i feel like theyre trying to juggle too much plot without focusing on the main couple (which should be the focus of attention!)
I miss season 1 and its originality. The romance and charm of the balls. Entire dance sequences in which we just melt into how well the characters blend into one big family. Proper back stories and exposition into traumas and struggles.
In season 1, we saw the duke's life struggles with having a child and continuing his lineage, and how daphne melted his heart.
In season 2, we saw anthony struggle with accepting love and finding it unnecessary, yet his passion for kate knows no bounds.
In season 3? Nothing. Its just... Not the same.
Colin literally says "i wouldnt touch penelope with a ten foot pole."
AND THEN THEY KISS IN THE 2ND EPISODE?
    AND THE CARRIAGE SCENE?!
Sorry to offend, but it feels like he doesnt deserve her.
He did no grovelling, no overthinking, no crying, no desperation.
He saw deblin as an opponent, and decided to claim penelope.
Suddenly. With no proper reasoning or emotional reason.
That wasnt the case in season 1 and 2.
We understood every breath the main couple took. But its just not the same.
Also! Colin was so reserved and shy in the first 2 seasons. Like we knew literally nothing about him except that he's always off on travels. Suddenly, he's a man whore just like everyone else? We literally loved him for his decency.
For the first few episodes, he's whoring around happily. And suddenly in the last episode, he gets an epiphany and wonders to his friends "what if I don't want to do what other men do for fun?" Like excuse me?
I feel like the writers are trying to give Colin a level of depth that is kind of impossible to provide. Unlike the duke and Anthony, we get no childhood trauma flashbacks. We have no idea what his goals are, what he wants to be, why he is the way he is.
I suppose that is why we weren't able to enjoy Colin as the main lead like we did with Anthony. Because in season 1, we just Anthony was a jerk and trying to marry Daphne off to an old guy. But! When it was Anthony's turn to be the main lead male...... THEY DID HIS CHARACTER JUSTICE! We literally understand him now, even if we think he's still kind of a wimp 😅
But we don't know anything about Colin.
We know a lot about Penelope though.
And it's a shame, how badly one sided this love story is.
Penelope isn't even a thought in his mind, yet Colin is her entire world.
We don't see any of their friendship grow, we see no flashbacks, nothing.
    Its just..... So empty.
I prefer season 1 any day of the year.
    What a shame really.
So much promotional content, yet the season is empty of the magic and beauty that Bridgerton used to have.

I was incredibly irritated that everyone was like omg Pen you landed Debling because of Colin helping you! When really… no? Like yes she took his advice I suppose but their initial attraction and interaction was just them being self deprecating together. Pen didn’t see him as an option and thus was real with him. The “Colin teaching Pen” plotline was such a waste of time. Nothing came of it! She could’ve just been friends with him and had the same outcome.
Like she’s lost Eloise and so Colin steps in like I’ll be your friend as best I can! And then she could ask him to kiss her as a friend etc etc. a friend giving advice. Etc. having Eloise being loud and letting everyone know Colin was doing this seems to literally only exist so lady whistledown had to bad mouth Penelope. This way later in the season (I assume) she can be like “I spoke badly of everyone! Even myself! I do what must be done!” But it just felt so weird. Why is everyone fixated? They’ve been friends for years if not a full decade+ and she has no male relative as others state during the show! Like would this shock anyone?? Really?? No one was like omg Anthony helping Daphne she must be pathetic!

I also found the teaching plotline completely useless and unnecessary . I mean, Colin did not even teach her a single thing, the way you usually see in movies. I honestly find the show preferable to the books in almost every single aspect, but they REALLY dropped the ball in introducing this new character. I think we were all sold on the idea that Lord Debbling would be in love with Pen, but then he seemed to be interested in her solely for convenience which was honestly sad. He had like one good scene and I feel that his character is completely written off. I can understand that they needed something to bring Colin and Pen together that wasn’t the big plot of the books as the show is going about that in a different route, but it just wasn’t well implemented and it makes me sad.

Lord Debling’s character felt like an interesting foil to Colin’s. Debling knows what he’s interested in, what his values are and what he’s looking for in marriage. He’s self assured and doesn’t care what the ton thinks of him. Colin, on the other hand, is trying too hard to fit into a charismatic rake archetype, in order to fit in with the ton. Colin is struggling to form his own self identity and doesn’t really know what he wants. I actually really liked Lord Debling and I can relate to the idea of wanting partnership rather than romance but since he never felt like he was a serious romantic contender, it was obvious their courtship was never going to work out.
I also really wish Penelope actually had the choice to choose between Colin and Lord Debling. I really wanted Penelope to come to the realization that even though Lord Debling was a suitable practical match for her, what she really wants and deserves to have is romance. It felt flat for Lord Debling to end the courtship and tell Penelope directly that she deserves romance, I wanted her to come to that realization internally.

I came across your channel from the previous vids about Penelope and her book, so the entire time I watched Bridgerton today I was thinking about you and what you had said about the novel. Obviously, I'm excited to hear your thoughts on the season. I felt Lord Debling was a very nice, genuine man but I found him a little flat, given that he is seen by others as a bit eccentric and he is openly fine with that. I didn't expect anything wacky or anything but maybe just more... enthusiasm about himself or other things? Funny enough the lovely gentleman who likes to sit in silence with Francesca had so much more light when he was interested in something.
His line about Pen being able to make someone whither with a look was so sexy. I wish that energy had stayed, but he was too often ... wallpaper? He was nice, which a lot of these men aren't. I still like him, because he's open minded and patient. But he became droll. Personally... I believe he told Pen all of that about having a wife to stay home was because he believed that would be what makes her happiest and he was fine with that. I think if he had caught the attention of a woman who is interested in traveling to strange lands, he would be happy to take her? He seems like he wants someone he gets along with who won't hang on him for their personality like many of the women of the Ton. He liked that Cressida "shared" his interests and he did perk up and Pen faking her interest poorly lost her esteem with him in the moment, but when Pen was honest about not sharing those interests he swung back to her. I think he is attracted to self-assured people and wants a wife he can get along with. He's nice. I was hoping for more sparkle.

Lord Debling's highest selling point is that a match with him is "convenient".It is perfect for a woman who wants to settle down and get married because she has no other prospects. In that case, he would be an ideal husband for many. Caring, allows his wife a certain amount of freedom (Of course not enough to travel with him), and has good money. For someone who can find their happiness and satisfaction in just listening to their husband's exotic travels while they await dutifully for his return, he's perfect.
But that kind of married life is so far removed from what the viewers imagined for Pen, that he didn't feel like an option at all. A 2nd male lead should be perceived as an active threat by both the 1st male lead and the viewers. But because everything with Debling was so... lukewarm, he didn't once pose as a threat to collin. A threat would be someone who was in love with Pen and pursued her relentlessly, but Debling only had convenience to offer and not love.

Okay, unpopular opinion, but there was too much self-pity for Penelope this season! I wanted her to be strong, to be desirable. I don't believe such a clever woman with intricate schemes how to sell her paper with the smallest cost would suddenly become so shy and wouldn't have known what to say in the company of a man. She had never been shy with Colin, and she liked him the most. Why would she suddenly become shy and unconfident with people who she doesn't even care about? I feel like she was pitying herself in every scene she was in! Every romantic or erotic scene started as "oh poor Penelope, let's console her". Where's the dark horse powerful woman behind a wallflower facade we all loved in the first two seasons?

    • @julial4569
      @julial4569 6 месяцев назад +3

I feel like after her glow-up the men around her needed to be intimidated by her! And that's why she couldn't get herself a suitor. And Colin's lessons were not needed, he just wanted a way to approach her not to seem like he suddenly became one of the suitors as well. I wanted Penelope to casually call Colin her friend, and Colin to be flushed and visibly uncomfortable with that word, not the other way around! What we got instead was one kiss out of pity, and then Colin suddenly wants this woman. It's lazy writing!

I think they wanted to avoid people shipping them together, so they had to nuke his personality so that Colin would seem better. It's a real shame, because he had such a interesting character for someone who was only in 3 episodes. The writers realized they flew a little too close to the sun with Debling and had to immediately backtrack so that the focus would be on Polin.

It does make sense that Debling just went "lol ok byeee" after he noticed the unresolved feelings between Pen and Colin.
He'd be gone soon after their marriage and they didn't have that much mutual trust built up yet, nor did he feel genuine love for her or vice versa. He straight up tells her so. He wanted a practical match, and let's be honest, the chances of Pen cheating on him with Colin in his 3 YEARS (!!!) of absence were not off the table whatsoever. Debling's a smart man.

My best guess is that Debling is meant for Eloise in a future season. The trip is a plot device to get him to leave until it’s her turn as lead.
I am also guessing that he will marry Cressida in this season, but then have something happen to that relationship. When he returns from his travels, he will grow closer to Eloise because of her friendship with Cressida.
He was somewhat disappointing in this season, but I think it’s meant as a signal that it’s not his time, yet.

Another person said it already but yeah no, Eloise ends up with someone else. But, maybe he do ends up with Cressida? So far his interest and Cressida's line up a bit, knowing how he want to pursue his own dreams while giving plenty of space for his future wife to pursue her own. Perfect for Cressida since she hasn't been able to learn things about herself due to her family and sht, so having a marriage that gives her stable living and enough freedom will be perfect. Kinda like what happened to Marina, she marries off Phillip yet there's no attachment and she is as free as she can be.

I thought it was sensible of Lord Debling to break things off with Penelope rather than try to pursue things even further, which would have complicated the relationship.
After Cressida had mentioned to him about the Bridgertons living across from the Featheringtons, it clicked in Lord Debling’s mind the fondness she has for Colin. Especially given that her favorite seat in the house is by the window, facing directly out towards the Bridgerton residence.
Debling had specified to Pen that he was looking for a practically match, not necessarily love, due to his extensive travels. This was the deciding factor for ending things with her.

Lord debling certainly had a lot of fondness and a lot of warmth towards penelope, but it did not come off like he was in LOVE with her. I was hoping for that for her. But I do think that penelope had a bit of an awakening moment during the balloon scene in which Lord debling saves her because she has never had a man so vehemently protect her.
Also, the fact that he did not fight for her. After realizing it, there might be some feelings between Colin and Penelope was weird. Because if you have such a fondness for this woman, I imagine you would want to fight to keep her in some regard.

Lord Debling is a very reasonable man, that didn't find any reason to "fight for" or "persuade" Penelope on to a marriage when he clearly saw that she had feelings for her male-friend. So it was perfectly ok for him to drop her, it did hurt her and the audience feelings but making them all a triangle love would have been out of character and super toxic.

I actually liked how non-cliché it was. I don’t think he’s bad or anything. He has different expectations. I thought it was even a bit refreshing, because it’s a normal reaction. Colin did make a scene.

Its sad that promotion built up Penelope as seeing her worth and being the diamond in the rough, but the only man who wanted her other than Colin was for practical reasons? Like i get that she wont have a gaggle of men suddenly liking her, but she shouldve at least got Debling actually loving her as he courts her. It wouldve made Colin have more competition, but it would be more about Penelope choosing between her desires and a good man who saw her value from the get go, the war between the heart and the mind

I for one am fine with how he was. After a whole season of a love triangle I am more than fine we did not get it here. Although if I could rewrite it I would have him be very int Pen instead. However, I just figured they changed this due to well a love match for everyone in that era was just not always a big deal. For Cressida especially, she is fine without love so long as the man treats her well and more importantly is her choice as she said. It is sad and I wish for her to find love, but in a show set in this time period we just have to accept it will not happen for every character. Also it is realistic for Pen to be ok with it as a women with a job even if it is secret to appraise her freedom in keeping Whistledown to be enough in exchange for a love match.

Ok hear me out…what if Lord Debling told Pen at that bal that she should ask herself what it is that she truły wants (or smtg like that) and just left. Then Collin kisses her like in the show and proposes, but now we’re not sure whats going to happen, since Pen has to now either accept Collin or apologize to Lord Debling and go thru with the marrige👀 imo it’d be sm more interesting

I get that they wanted to do something different and not to do another love triangle so they don't repeat S2...but Debling is already there. The love triangle was already there based on marketing. They should have just committed to that and made the most out of the tension. Then it wouldn't have mattered that there were so many other plotlines.

Deblin was a throw away character. You're aabsolutely right in that he could have been a stronger love interest, but yeah the whole pragmatic thing was crap.

I thought about this too, but also, we have to remember that there are different types of people outthere. Lord Debling is a simple man, he kind of knows how he wants to live his life and this is reflected in choosing a wife as well. He's not extremely passionate and he doesn't look for that type of love that would keep you on your toes, he wants to settle down and go for his first love: nature. Maybe if they had made him be too passionate and in love and wanted Pen to be with him even in his travels, we would have rooted for him more than Collin lol, who has his flaws. If Lord Debling were perfect in every way, then the whole Pen+Collin thing wouldn't be as amazing as it is.

I don't know. We are 4 episodes into the season. Seems like at this juncture he was introduced to point not just Colin towards Penelope but to reveal for those in the audience who missed the build up that Colin and Penelope have mutual feelings. However I exoect more of him this season.
This coincides with a complaint others have had that Polin were not featured enough. I think we forget that unlike all of the relationships blossoming, Polin is the only one that has had multiple years before its season to explore the relationship. Colin already loved her but he himself was still growing. He has shown over and over that he has been on a journey of becoming. Plus he hadn't seen her in this physical way yet.
The scenes cemented things for him. He did already see Penelope in that way from the little things the clueless man missed in all the seasons.
To me the true conflict was not did Colin love her or would he commit to her. The drama is in the lady whistldown reveal. Here is where you will see Polin get to know each other in this new way. I suspect that what has been planted in these 4 episodes is what will allow Penelope to stand up for herself and know her value.

I feel like at this point netflix shoudn't be doing 1 season per book... There are too many plot lines going on and things would feel more natural and interesting if they were going slower. Like, focus this season on Francesca, but keep a pace with Penelope and Colin Developing along with all the other characters and them on 4th season, do Polin with space for Benedict, 5th for Benedict with space for Eloise and it goes on... I feel like there is so much content that can happen! Or at least, give us more episodes per season! Anthony and Kate season was incredible, but I felt like there was one or two episodes missing, and now, there is at least 4 episodes missing already! I really wish we could see more of angry Penelope, Lord Debling, Jealous Colin, space for them and other characters. I'm so afraid of the next 4 cause i really think they shoudn't reveal Lady Whistledown identity rn, but they probably will just for the sake of keeping it faithful to the novel!

    Spoilers!
I expected Lord Dabling to be so good that in parts we would regret that Penelope chose Colin. I expected that Lord Dabling would pursue and desire her, but in fact it was Penelope who fought with Cressida for his attention (((and as soon as Penelope did something as not he expected, Lord Dabling dismissed her and did not hesitate even a minute. I have an impression that Penelope had no any other choice but Colin, and this made me sad for her ((((

the reason why lord debling fell flat is because whilst he wants to go out traveling and leaving his wife at home, colin mentioned (several times) that he wants someone to travel the world with. they're not even remotely competing when it comes to penelope, because colin wins every time. that's what the problem is, penelope would've married debling for convenience, but she knew she loved colin. it would've been more interesting to see her fall in love a little bit with debling too, and then end up choosing colin anyways. that would've made for a far more interesting plot.
also the fact that francesca (who was newly introduced this season) had more character development than lord debling is why he's just not that interesting of a love interest.
this season kind of sucked so far, although I'm really enjoying cressida's character development and the way things are progressing between colin and penelope.
also the way they get together seems kind of unnatural, like it doesn't make sense. penelope begging colin to kiss her makes sense but then from then on out they don't really explain why colin is lusting over her. like i wish they had more scenes like the dream sequence, to really help BUILD that desire. cuz once they kissed i was kinda just like "meh?"

Debling NOT EVEN TRYING was also surprising for me because he seemed to be build as a charismatic character that was reeeally into Pen because of her chance of behaviour, trusting her "freed side" a little bit more thanks to Colin's tips. That was really strange, I'll give you that.

Yes...because no real connection was ever established between him and Pen.
The introduction of the other young lady chasing him--every time they tried to talk--made it so he had hardly connected with her before he decided to give up.
There should have been at least two of three scenes of them really connecting with each other.

It was actually disappointing cause he actually never fought for her and the time they were "kinda" courting Pen was in Cressida's shadow. It was too quick and fast. I really waited much more drama, tension, and rivalry in this season.

I wish the actress/Pen could have pined away a bit between seasons. It would have made it really dramatic to her coming out and involvement with Colin when he arrives home. Maybe he finally starts seeing her.
And I dont mean ozempic pining, just a healthier glow.
There was one scene at the house with colin where pen was wearing a pink thing around her neck...i thought at first it was a disease/rash.

The most sad to me was when they remove the friendship between Lady Danbury and Penelope from the book. It was one of my favourite part in the book because Penelope finally had a supportive positive female role in her life, she didn't hv that with her mother nor her sisters except maybe her younger sister which doesn't even exist in the show.
They could've cut Francesca story shorter and focus more on Pen & Eloise relationship.
