My name is Sam and together with my girlfriend Lyanne, I am on a quest to restore the beauty of this old Italian villa from 1895. Join us as we have to let go of our Dutch habits to fit in in our Italian surroundings, were the word 'plan' gets redefined and our tastebuds are awakened.
The goal of this project is to show that with limited financial means and a lot of optimism we can resurrect the beauty of this abandoned villa in a green and sustainable way. But most of all learn from everything that we encounter and enjoy it whilst we're at it.

This was my initial reaction too, but then I looked up what was known about giant bamboo and it is not the same invasive species as regular bamboo. It’s root system grows in a clump, not in runner’s so he’s not as bad off as he would be with the other kind. Just my 2¢. 😊

Sam. Be careful with the Bamboo. That's one of the most invasive plants around. Once it takes hold there's no getting rid of it . Also, work on some weed control around your beds. I'm afraid if you leave for a few days, you will lose all your hard work.

Sam please 🙏 don’t go w diagonal bath design. Design wise maybe do straight & longways Parallel to shower wall OR pull it away frm wall more centered into the room like an island bath you can walk around. Your room looks big enough. That blue bath installed like it was never meant to ever budge. Keen to see your progress 😊

Please heed all the comments regarding the bamboo. It is impossibly invasive and will take over everything that you have planted or plan to plant. Also does not look like you will have enough room for a sink and toilet with the tub diagonal? What about putting it in a large shower or wet room with only glass panels and no low wall? This will save space that you seem to need to fit everything on the one wall.

  • @bdlodahl
    @bdlodahl 2 месяца назад +12

I strongly agree with the suggestion to avoid using the diagonal positioning of the tub. I suggest you discuss this with Lyanne and other women who are experienced with cleaning bathrooms. Easy access to all areas is key to keeping bathroom spaces clean and fresh. Moving fixtures obviously increases cost and lengthens the time to a completed, functional bathroom. If cost and time is not an issue, I quite agree with another suggesting positioningʻ the tub in front of the window (if sitting in tub would afford pleasant views) or making it perpendicular to its former wall location which would allow less crowded spacing of the sink and toilet! I'm guessing you may be keeping the opposite wall open for placement of a vanity and needed storage. Also that would provide balance of visual and actual "weight" to the room which is currently and aesthetically lacking. Of course, these are just observations and considerations based on video views. Good luck in weighing out your best options. Also, Sam, if you feel you must bring bamboo into your landscape, follow the advice to keep it in containers. Otherwise, it will overtake & destroy everything above and below ground level! Wishing you everything good and beautiful going forward! Your work ethic and commitment to your project is inspiring! Thank you for sharing your journey!

Have you considered moving the bathtub to the other side of the room? That way, you could make the shower larger and put a lovely two-sink vanity between the toilet and shower. This would utilize all of the space in the room instead of jamming everything onto one wall...might make the room look less crowded. The down side to this idea is the extra plumbing work for the bath, though.

As so many people already said: don't put bamboo in the garden. It don't fit to Italy. Clear the yard and plan what fits to a Italian garden. Olivtrees come strait to my mind. Maybe some fruitbushes and some roses.
In the bathroom I would leave the tub out. Or do you often take bathes ? A nice big walk in shower will do it.
    Take care 🍀

  • @karenmetcalf-pugh5

Another comment. Keep the tub parallel to the shower wall. The wasted space you describe would then be used for the sink and toilet. The flow would be so much better. I just got through designing a new bath and closet. Talk about planning.

I just read the outcry in the comments about bamboo. I have to agree. The stuff spreads like mad and the leaves are everywhere. I had various types of bamboo in Thailand for a few years, and I was allergic to half of them. Now there is just one bad bamboo in a far corner and its trunks are cut down once a year to make perches and decorations for the giant parrot aviary.

‼️BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE BAMBOO‼️
Dig a plastic border of at least 30 cm deep in the ground around the bamboo, otherwise you will lose control over it and it WILL become an invasive species‼️
Years ago i had a lot of problems with the big bamboe, this one went up to 10 meters and you almost could see them grow, i'm not kidding, you saw the difference in just a couple of hours and this was at my previous house, but thanks to a neighbor three doors down who planted them, my cobblestone backyard was completely damaged and it's almost impossible to get rid of!
    Je bent gewaarschuwd! 😉👍🏻✌🏼

I bought my house with some bamboo in the garden, I had to rent a digger to get it out, wasn't possible to get it out by hand. Not all sorts of bamboo are as invasive as mine, there all a pain in the .... to get rit off😅. If you plant them in your garden, make sure the roots can't get out of the places where you want them to grow by putting metal or plastic borders deep in the ground! Een gewaarschuwd mens telt voor 2😉. Keep up the good work.

You'd definitely have to re-enforce the roof, but it would make a cool garden?!? Ok, maybe not! Lol!

What about a stand alone bathtub with little legs? That way, you don't have to build around it, and you will save space. That bathrub looks very big and placed diagonally as you did. It looks awkward.
Why don't you draw the dimensions in the computer and then take it to a shop that sells bathrooms, so you can get a professional opinion and that way everything will fit perfectly.
You can also buy a small steam machine and place it inside your shower. All sides, up to the ceiling, must be closed off, and it has a timer. The steam starts as you take a bath, which is the best experience. You will love it and it doesn't take any space.

A freestanding diagonal bath in a larger room would be fab but your bath needs to be built in a hob and will be quite clunky when built. I think put the bath along the opposite wall starting at the window and then have shower to left of where the bath was, with Vanity, then toilet along the old bath wall. I am a designer and I love that you are thinking outside the box but the practicality of cleaning a small triangular space will be a problem. Plus you want a serene, spacious bathroom I would imagine. P.S. We have friends in Tuscany with an out of control bamboo forest on their land and it takes most of their time to battle it!

I agree with everyone about the bamboo. On the bathroom layout I love the idea of the two person shower. but if you want the tub next to it use a straight line so the rest of the bathroom is crowded into the corner. It will make the room seem larger and then hopefully you could have a cabinet for storage under the sink. A two person sink area would be really nice for everyday use. Especially after that shower together. But there may not be room. Because I am guessing putting the toilet on the other side of the room would require a lot of work.

i see you have Baobab seeds, are they ok to be grown in the mountains of Italy, and the tree grows to a huge size and is normally located in the warm savannah regions of Africa, plus its root systems could be problem for water canal and and stream, so you would have plant to not to close to your water systems. If you look into Permaculture that has great ideas for land management, there are RUclips videos on it.

    Bonjour Sam,

Bamboo is Beautiful and Magical BUT it needs a forest space all to itself it will shoot a runner root 5 miles away ....there is no way to control bamboo
    Your bathroom will be Amazing!!!!!!
Are you able to extend the plumbing for the sink/s and tub? That way later you would have room to add a little sauana to the shower area if you wanted maybe.......

Even clumping bamboo will spread … it is its nature. Is it native to your area? If no, there must be native plants that will meet your needs. Also, is it wise to plant trees next to the canal? Their roots will seek out the water source, and having seen all the effort you’ve devoted so far to getting tree roots out of stone walls … and will be spending rebuilding stone walls …

aaannddd one more thing … as a gardener who plants plants because he loves plants, and being the poster boy for “How NOT to Plan a Garden,” I wish I’d planned my garden much better than I happened to do. More planning and would have saved me a lot of time, and a lot of plants, and a lot of space. I grew up with huge vegetable and fruit gardens, and that’s going to be a wonderful thing. Who’s going to be canning and freezing all those fruits and vegetables? (Just curious … maybe you live in a year-round part of Italy…)

please read up on how to manage bamboo. It's a plant that can very easily get away from you and your neighbors might be crabby if it gets on to their property.

Moso bamboo can be controlled by mowing or weed whacking new shoots in the spring but you do have to keep on top of it. It is a big and beautiful bamboo unlike the creeping invasive grassy type of bamboo. None of my business by I’m curious to know why your wife isn’t in the videos any more - did she go back to the Netherlands?

if the tub goes in front of the window, as some people suggest, don't you have to redo the plumbing?

Your idea of planting bamboo needs serious reconsideration, love your perspective, usually, but I believe you would benefit from a landscape professional.
Please consider getting some design help with placement of that beautiful tub. Diagonal placement of a permanent fixture is not advisable.please look into Feng Shui-
(in Chinese thought) a system of laws considered to govern spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy (qi), and whose favorable or unfavorable effects are taken into account when siting and designing buildings, and spaces. Wishing for nothing but success for you Daniel, please take as constructive criticism or advice.❤️

Why are you trying to cram everything on one wall? Pipes need to move. Do you need a tub? How about just building out a really large shower?

I’m sorry that’s a stupid idea to have the bathtub diagonal in the bathroom and you leave a little short space for the shower aren’t you just have the bathtub come straight off the wall leaves more space for both sink toilet shower but your ideal not so smart
