  • Plans change constantly, but we're finally close to mounting the first beam for the boiler room. After this we'll do some paint tests in the boiler room and then finish up the rest.
Join me today as I am getting closer to mounting this first beam.

My name is Sam and together with my girlfriend Lyanne, I am on a quest to restore the beauty of this old Italian villa from 1895. Join us as we have to let go of our Dutch habits to fit in in our Italian surroundings, were the word 'plan' gets redefined and our tastebuds are awakened.
The goal of this project is to show that with limited financial means and a lot of optimism we can resurrect the beauty of this abandoned villa in a green and sustainable way. But most of all learn from everything that we encounter and enjoy it whilst we're at it.

Young Sam, perhaps an orbital sander with an extension plus two different grits would be a faster and more precise method for smoothing your ceiling. (Also, have you had the villa tested/checked for asbestos?) I've heard that older villas and chateaus often have some type of tempera paint used in past decades, on ceilings, which can be difficult to paint over or remove.
The bathroom will be unique, creative and cozy when completed...good job on the beam!
Your garden is so happy and full of beautiful flowers and healthy plants. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

Have you considered buying a laser level? It would make this so much easier for yourself.
Suggestion: under no circumstances make the mistake that I did. I painted the bathroom a bright banana yellow. It is an assault every morning! No one want to be awakened that violently in the morning!
My hot water heater is outside thanks to some really poor planning when they added the bathroom and kitchen onto the house. The upside to that is if it ever springs a leak, it will drain into the garden. 😏

in my 1945 bungalow, the bathroom is only shoulder wide between the features on both walls . . . way too cramped.

Odds are that old paint contains lead - make sure to wash up/shower after being exposed.

You should have used a tube level (water hose level) to ensure the brackets are mounted level. Suggestion for next time...

Hi, sorry to ask but as an Australian, is a boiler room a hot water tank? If so, is it a Dutch thing to have it actually in the bathroom? We sometimes put them in the ceiling, sometimes outside or in a cupboard. I’ve not seen this done though.

Boiler rooms are usually noisey. Are you sure you want it so close to the bedroom? Basements are ideal places for such things.

In such a big house it would take forever to get hot water from the basement to the upper floors, thus wasting water and losing heat in the water as it travels through such length of pipe runs. No, you need the water to be heated close to where it will be used. Much more efficient.

I love watching you work but I hate the way it finishes or maybe it's because you could continue it into another one if you don't have an ending ??? Overall the garden is looking lovely

Is that lead based paint? If so you should not breathe in dust particles.

Sam, prosím ťa zefektívni svoju prácu napríklad používaním elektrického náradia. Tvoji sledovatelia ti dávajú rozumné rady, počúvaj ich. Myslím to dobre, týmto štýlom práce si zničíš zdravie a práca nebude napredovať.
