- It definitely took some getting used to there huge tiles, these are the biggest I could get my hands on, I love them. However they're quite difficult to get on the wall, but since this was my first time tiling, all the other tiling jobs in the future will be easier, right?
Join me today for some dusty tile business.

My name is Sam and together with my girlfriend Lyanne, I am on a quest to restore the beauty of this old Italian villa from 1895. Join us as we have to let go of our Dutch habits to fit in in our Italian surroundings, were the word 'plan' gets redefined and our tastebuds are awakened.
The goal of this project is to show that with limited financial means and a lot of optimism we can resurrect the beauty of this abandoned villa in a green and sustainable way. But most of all learn from everything that we encounter and enjoy it whilst we're at it.
Me encanta como va quedando todo ❤
So excited for you luxurious bathroom for you at last .🙋♀️🇦🇺
Ah me too!
Love the big tiles so much easier to clean
That’s also true haha, wasn’t why I bought them but it’s definitely a plus
Hi Sam, the big tiles are so hard to work with, so much preparation, but so worth it. Epic change seeing the start of the tiling, I know what you are going to be doing for a while, but I'm so excited for you. It's going to look amazing. Great start, it's definitely better to take the time and prepare the tiles before you mix the adhesive. Can't wait to see how it goes.👍❤️
I think so too, thanks a lot Neuton!
oh wow !. when i first saw you painting the tiles grey, my heart skipped a beat as i'm not a fan of painted tiles. ive seen others do it and they never really look right and peel after a couple of years, so i was pleased to see you tiling it properly. i have never come across tiles so big and thick before. they look amazing. love the colour choice. but then im bias as i have a similar tile only in a 7x7 i think they are. the bathrooms going to look so lovely ang fresh. can't wait to see the next update to see how far you have got.
Thanks! Quite proud of it myself, it’s definitely not perfect but also not bad for my first time. I can’t wait either, thanks!
What a stress! But you managed to do it in a beautiful and pro way! Tiles are a big thing in this villa!
It definitely was, you can see me cutting/adjusting the tiles even when I was tiling, it was stressful, but we got there in the end :) thanks!
@@Villa_Oliva Bravo!
Oh heck Yes Sam,😮Your tiling Now! Ya know ,now that that seal is on the bathroom walls it makes it look some what smaller?Hmmmm Your work is so cool! Hard work is paying off Sam. Its going to he the best looking home, you'll be do proud! Thanks again!😊
No thank you for following along and getting involved :). Yeah the dark colour makes it look smaller, I agree. Hopefully that’ll be reverted when we put a brighter plaster on it later.
Thank you so much!
@@Villa_Oliva YesSam,May I ask your your girlfriends name?
Opps I know her name now ,its a lovely name just like her!
Haha no worries, I think she’s lovely as well ;)
👍👍👍 So glad you put on a mask to cut. Seen way too many do it yourselfers cut marble without one. Silica in the lungs from cutting marble is a huge long term issue. More so for those working in the marble production industry, but it has crossed over to construction work as well.
Yeah definitely, I am way more aware of all the dust and debris in the air since I started renovating. Trying to wear one as often as possible
@@Villa_Oliva Silicosis is the illness related to stone marble dust. Italy has a lot of cases with their marble industry. 😥
Yeah can imagine!
Love the tiles! The bathroom is going to be stunning!
Can't wait! Thank you :)
Ottimo lavoro. Molto bello il colore del marmo. Bravo
Thank you so much, we searched for quite some time, but we're super happy with the colour and pattern, thanks!
Excellent job! That wall looks fabulous!
Thanks so much!
You are a perfectionist, wonderful.
All good progress young man 👏👏
Thank you thank you!
Yay 🎉 you’ve reached the first of the tiling . Clever thinking to first lay out and cut. Looking forward to the rest of the tiling. Looking good.
Yes, finally :)Thanks!
looks great - nice work!
Thank you! Cheers!
The tiling looks so good. I could sense a little frustration at the beginning, but that’s what you call gaining experience. Glad you mastered that skill😊
Gaining experience is my best skill to date haha, thanks!
Your tile layout looks stunning! Great job!
✨🌞✨
Thanks so much! 😊
Brilliantly done❤
Thank you so much!
👌
You're getting there!
Thanks!
A very important thing to know about tiling…..it’s much easier to do with YOUR SHIRT OFF. ❤
Like all parts of the renovation ;)
My hero! Fearless.
😇
Félicitations une nouvelle compétence acquise ! Les carreaux sont magnifiques digne d'une belle maison comme la votre !
Thank you!!
Sam you seriosly need to invest in a tile cutter if you are going to be tiling the rest of the property , in my opinion the wet cutters are better , but you have done a great job so far .
I’ve got one actually, just the weather wasn’t allowing me to cut outside. Furthermore layers out the tiles in such a way that the cut edge would be covered, so I can practice to my heart’s content without having to see my practice cuts. But I’m curious what the difference is between the two, without a doubt I’ll pull that one out one day to see what it can do. Never used it, so I’m excited. Thanks!
Sam if you would just go down your line just slightly with the grinder then all the way through follow that line...it will not normally chip or break.
I did do that actually the very first time, and it chipped and broke on me, so I abandoned that technique. but its strange because I also thought that was going to do it for me, maybe ill try again in a slightly different way?
Thanks for thinking along and sharing!
Lyanne♥😊
lubricate the cutting surface with water that will help the cutting
Thanks! Will give it a shot!
Tiles should be cut with a water-dowsed diamond blade. They make specific tile cutting machines with these features.
I think the edge would be cleaner, however, I designed it in such a way that you don’t see the cut. This blade is made for dry cutting btw, but it would’ve helped with the dust for sure
You need a wet saw to cut tile!!
As long as he's masking while cutting, should be fine. That is thin enough panels he shouldn't need it for cooling. A wet saw is good for keeping dust down, but he'd have to cut outside then. Not sure this is the right weather to be able to do that.
You can do both I think, this blade was made to cut dry. However yeah it would’ve helped with the dust. As Clive said, it was raining outside, so couldn’t cut there. But thanks for the advice!
Отлично получается керамика под мрамор 👍👍👍!!
Thank you!
Great work not easy working on you own love the tiles light colour makes the room look bigger and brighter 🤩Ann 🏴
Couldn’t agree more haha, thanks Ann!
Well done sam, the tiles you have chosen are beautiful. X
Thank you, we love them too, glad you like them :)
Beautiful tiles! You are doing a wonderful job! That's tough work doing it by yourself. Much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖
Thank you so much Jackie !
It’s going well and the bathroom will be stunning
Thanks!
The bigger the tile, the more difficult it is to lay. You need a really flat surface and very secure.
True, that’s why I put so much time in making sure it was flat and prepped. I think I turned out alright
You're doing it exactly right. Be patient, be persistent, be meticulous. It's going to be stunning. It's wonderful. Good job!
Thanks, I sure hope so!

He might come sooner than you think!
Im beginning to see you vision, love the tile choice, the floor looked like a bear to lay and not crack the tiles, good job. From seattle wa USA 😁👍💪💖🇺🇸💖
Thank you!!
Hola, en este video no tiene subtitulos. Los anteriores si. 😢
I know, so sorry. Don’t know why this happened, they don’t get generated. Maybe because i don’t talk as much in this video?
Spray bottle of water across the cut line will probably help with the chipping. Beautiful tile choice 😊
Oh good one, although it might get quite messy with the angle grinder disk being made to cut dry and all. Could give it a try, thanks!
Aren't you suppose to wet the tile?
You can do both, cut dry or wet. Wet definitely would’ve helped with the dust though. But it was too wet outside to cut there :)
@@Villa_Oliva I didn't know that, thank you. I see all the other guys on here using water. That's why I asked, and I know why
Get yourself a tile cutter please.
on it
Hey, please add a ‘strobe’ warning to this video, it might affect some people with light sensitivity or epilepsy
True, I’ll try to keep it in mind

new plumbing system is blue plastic that needs hot to unite...what you did is out of date...
subtitles please...
Sorry, don’t know why this one doesn’t have them. Maybe because I don’t talk that much?
@@Villa_Oliva Maybe, anyway they are useful, it will be for the next time. I admire you, keep up the good work! Thank you for the response. Have a nice day!
I do my best, it’s always a nightmare with the subtitles. No idea why they don’t get generated. I will do my best for the next one, thanks you too!
I didnt recognise you with clothes on
Can imagine, get used to it, there’s still no heating in Villa Oliva, so it’s about to get cold here
@@Villa_Oliva Oh its a good thing, It freaks me out seeing you under the burning sun and cutting and digging and chopping stuff with no protection
ugly ceiling for a beautiful building, you should ask to an architect and civil engineering, seems that you know nothing about it...
