    As an I-99 local, here is some information:
    1. I-99 is actually a fairly heavily used road by commercial traffic, justifying its Interstate designation. I-99 is used by Semis as a Northeast Megalopolis bypass and is the fastest way from most the Southeast to Buffalo, Toronto, Syracuse, and Rochester. On top of this, many companies have a large manufacturing plant or their HQ on I-99, like east coast powerhouse Sheetz.
    2. Bellefonte is pronounced Bell-font.
    3. There is a massive project in the works to upgrade I-99 to be a completed Interstate. Phase one was just completed last fall with the opening of exit 163 on I-80. 163 is meant to serve local traffic once the current I-80/I-99 interchange is turned into a flyover. Phase two is to improve Jacksonville Road as it will serve as a detour during flyover construction. Phase three is the flyover itself. There are also plans to bring US 220 up to Interstate standards in Mackeyville in the form of a flyover and Larrys Creek with a bypass.

      @jennsmith2333 Not even 94 goes this far north, but I also have a rather intriguing reason for this alignment. I’m planning on doing a back and forth drive along the Trans Canada Highway between Vancouver and Cape Breton next week, and from the research I’ve done, the ON 17 segment of the TCH is the ONLY road connecting the Prairie Provinces with Southeastern Ontario; there’s a 400 mile or so stretch between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie, and as it follows the shore of Lake Superior, it is quite windy and hilly. In bad weather, it can become a bottleneck. A high speed freeway across northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula could do wonders for commercial drivers between the two halves of the Great White North.

    I believe the reason US 15 is not yet signed as I 99 is because in the north bound lanes around English Center is a connecting dirt road called 4-mile Road. It connects to a few houses at the top of the mountain. It would cost tons of money to build an interchange for three houses or so. So, until they figure out how to get those people off the mountain, without connecting to Route 15, it will probably remain future I 99. Looking at Google Earth, I can't really see an affordable way of doing it except maybe Penn DOT buying the properties.

  • @mrath
    @mrath Год назад +4

    I think the best justification for making I-99 is connecting State College (a Big 10 University) to the Interstate system. In defense, it could be said that I-99 is still a work in progress, with an interstate standard road connecting to many existing expressways to make it a continuous road that meets Interstate standards. Many of the towns used as control cities are the main "towns" that were stopping points en-route to State College (from within Pennsylvania) when the route to State College was mostly on 2-lane or 4-lane roads (Mainly US 22, US 220, and US 322),with at grade intersections.

    • @ControlCityFreak
      @ControlCityFreak  Год назад +1

      Fair. I’m not denying the utility of the freeway’s existence, I just think the number is dumb and they could have easily made it a 3 digit road or just kept the 220 number.

    • @InternetKilledTV21
      @InternetKilledTV21 Год назад +1

      Hmm the simplest way I see that working: Drop everything 390 south of the Thruway and make it 99. Add a short concurrency of 99 and 86 to get from where 390 ends to 99 in Corning. Keep 390 north of the Thruway and make it concurrent with 99 all the way to the 390/590 split. 99 keeps on the current 390 routing to the Lake Ontario Pkwy and 390 gets rerouted where 590 goes currently up towards NY-104 and Seabreeze.

    • @pFoz

    The reason Pennsylvania has not signed I-99 beyond the I-80 interchange is because I-99 ends before reaching I-80 it becomes US 220 entirely just a few miles from I-80 where mussers lane enters is the end of I-99 as it no longer meets innerstate standards they are currently working on a high-speed interchange to connect I-99 directly to I-80. US 15 is currently not up to innerstate standards either, but after the high-speed interchange connecting I-80 and I-99 is complete, they will then start construction to make US 15 meet interstate standards.

    99 has been built in many segments small segmants. One of the many reasons for the horrible control cities.
    Until late 2000s, it ended at Exit 52. Pyrite rock was discovered when the road was being built between exit 62 and exit 68. This caused the road not to be complete for additional years.
    When the Section by Port Matilda opened, the interchange with 322 was created in a manner to support an x80 interstate spur from Clearfield around Phillipsburg to I 99 at Port Matilda. Purpose of this road would be quicker access to State College from points west of Clearfield on I 80. Most likely PA will never build this route, as 322 east of State College has been a higher priority for decades, yet is still only one lane each way.
    Bellefonte while a horrible control city, is the closest town in proximity to the interchange with I 80. PennDOT is working on a several phase plan to create a high speed interchange with 99 and 80. Phase one has just been complete. A new exit was made several miles east of exit 161 for PA route 26.
    It can be quicker to take exit 173 for PA 64 to PA 477 where US 220 becomes an expressway again than to stay on I 80 until US 220 exits the interstate.
    Once the 2 interchanges are built with I 80, the only remaining section to complete 99 in PA would be between Williamsport and Jersey Shore, PA. PA though has not yet decided for sure if 99 will be signed north of Williamsport.

    Though Bedford and Bellefonte are not ideal control cities, without sounding too cliche, they are very quaint small towns/county seats. Hollidaysburg and Huntingdon are also very nice towns along the I-99 corridor/central pa. And the Clinton County courthouse in Lock Hqven looks nice.

    There's one major error here: Bellefonte is a crucially important control city for residents of State College.
    It is, after all, the location of the Centre County courts. Which means that whenever Penn State's antics--football coaches doing inappropriate things with their charges, university officials covering it up, fraternity hazings leading to tragic deaths--lead to criminal trials, the road from State College to Bellefonte becomes the most important road in PA.

    Why it is currently an Interstate when it doesn’t have a direct connection to any other one (not counting the smidgen in New York) is baffling, more so than the out-of-grid location, but a somewhat decent list of controls can be gleaned if it were extended. I don’t like Bellefonte or Bedford; however, Rochester would be a great northern terminus if U.S. 15 were upgraded past Lock Haven and Williamsport. A good southern terminus would preferably be in Appalachian Virginia (along U.S. 220 to Harrisonburg or even Roanoke), but Cumberland wouldn’t be terrible either. As it is, the only good controls are Altoona and State College.

    13:10 US 220 used to follow ALT US 220's alignment and be congruent with Interstate 80 at Milesburg to Exit 178. This is why Milesburg is signed.
    I agree it is weird that even though US 220 south just went through Williamsport, the sign says to take 80 East to go back there.

    As for my side project, I unfortunately was only able to grade one more state in my free time (celebrating a family birthday and planning a road trip back and forth along the Trans Canada Highway sans the ferry segments). Probably predictable, but New Mexico did quite poorly: only signing out of state when about to leave the state, with the worst offender being I 25 into Colorado (apparently Pueblo is too much trouble). The non-Interstate freeways didn’t do much to help, as U.S. 70’s Frontage ramps references neither Las Cruces nor Alamogordo; and NM 423’s likewise say nothing of northern Albuquerque, nor Rio Rancho. Slightly better than Vermont, but worse than Nebraska, with all falling comfortably in the F tier.

    I'm actually for extending I-99 up to Rochester via I-86/I-390. I-99 is already on that angle where it ends and we could get rid of one of a billion X90 interstates we have already. It would help I-99 more of an interstate instead mostly intrastate except for something like 10 miles in NY. What do you think?

    I have a guess here, but not sure if I'm right. I'm wondering if they put some of the towns or cities on here as control cities that wouldn't be so great is that some of them are county seats. I think Bellefonte is the county seat of Centre County, which State College is in. It's not always the case, but wondering this.
    I think what's also confusing is there's a Lewistown AND a Lewisburg somewhat nearish (Lewistown is in Mifflin County and is closer to State College I think and Lewisburg is in Union County which is closer to Williamsport).
