Great as norm is can you only imagine if he used a cycle here and there and spent some time with his ears in the up rite and locked position in a wind tunnel to improve his aerodynamic capabilities on his approach ? Scary just to imagine
Doug I believe throwing a backup ball prevents somebody from overturning the ball especially with the balls that hook a lot. Myself I tend to overturn the ball which creates too much a spin and therefore loses power. I think Norm's tip would help somebody with my problem.
Hey norm,, LOL Hell freezes over here Every yr in Michigan,, LOL HELL , MICHIGAN,, but anyhow,, Nice Video, i use the same technique to shoot my 7 pins being a lefty but also if i ever leave say the 3,7,9 or something weird like that. One thing i like about norm is he is so intricate about the fundamentals. and just a class act all around
So, for us 2-handers out there using this drill, would we use both hands, instead of our thumb to do the 3x back-and-forth motion before release? I would think so, but I don't want to practice this incorrectly, even 2-handed.
I would love to know how to throw a backup ball purely for the 10 pin. Right now i'd say I average making 65% of my 10 pins. It drives me nuts and haven't been able to figure that pin out no matter what I do.
I can`t hook the ball to safe my life (Yet) but you are saying rotate your hand and wrist to hook the ball but I thought you lifted the ball with your index and ring fing !!
there must be some hand rotation 'counterclockwise' to generate sideturn on the ball. 2-2.5 inches of rotation with the fingers/wrist is all it takes. Lifting it up the back gives you FORWARD roll, ROtation is what gives you sideturn or HOOK on the ball.
Because this individual might have no concept of how to control or mitigate rotation... he chose this drill based on his observations of this particular bowlers tendencies
No, it is NOT incorrect! If you knew anything about Duke, you would know he throws a backup ball ONLY at single pin spares, mostly the ten pin. Duke is one of the few pros who does not change balls for spares; he changes his release. If he threw a hooking monster resin ball any other way, he'd miss a lot of spares. Thus, the backup ball. Some right handers throw a backup ball at the 2-8-10. Robert Smith WON the Japan Cup throwing a backup ball. Yea, throwing a backup ball is incorrect and wrong. LOL!
THANK YOU!!!! That is one of the best ways to show somebody how their hand should be when they release the ball. Well Done!!!!
I learned to do this back in 1961. I was the only one I knew doing it at the time.

Norm is a genius

Beautiful, simple...
Great lesson....
Awesome video
let it go, let it go.

With all due respect to norm duke, why the HELL would you EVER TEACH somebody to throw a backup ball? It's completely incorrect and wrong.
Because this individual might have no concept of how to control or mitigate rotation... he chose this drill based on his observations of this particular bowlers tendencies

+Doug Pinelli sometimes it could be effective example 2-8-10 split and the 2-10
You are stupid. Backup ball drills teach ppl to keep their elbows inside their wrists to increase leverages and put your wrist in stronger position.
that's why you rarely see duke missing single pin spares
