FYI from Blackstar: the tubes in the new Dept 10 pedals CAN NOT be removed/replaced/swapped by the user. So.....no swapping for your favorite preamp tube & should it need service or tube replacement, pray Blackstar has a USA service department affiliate.

Typical unhelpful nonsense from the notoriously crap Blackstar customer service dept.

Hi Tom I'm Marco from Italy, congratulations for the articulated and clear review😎 I have a question because it's difficult to try that pedal in my region. Some people sayed that the DI section is not so good because flat and not dynamic so they suggest to plug the pedal into something else like torpedo cab M, what do you think about it? Thank you so much!

Yet again, a manufacturing brands total lack of disclosure regarding USB digital interface bit and sample specs..
    Why ???
.. and Blackstar prevent user Valve swapping !!!???

a bit noisy on idle. would be nice if it had a built in noise gate

I ask the same question to Blackstar, and it’s not included. So I put a zuul into effect loop and it’s working fine

Possibly a stupid question but since they use a tube does that mean they have a short delay before the sound works like when you first turn on a tube amp? I find this important to know especially for something like a boost pedal which might be off for awhile and then when you switch it in you will certainly want it to be instant on.

The tube takes a couple of seconds to warm up when you power it, but it's essentially always on even when the pedal is bypassed. This isn't something you have to worry about.

I would very much hope that these pedals do nothing at all if you remove the tube because, otherwise, it's just for show!

Hey Dave! The pedals run at over 200VDC internally to help the ECC83 generate all of the desirable qualities of having the valve in the pedal! In Dept.10, the valve is used in exactly the same way as would be in a traditional valve pre-amplifier. The two sides of the ECC83 dual triode are cascaded together (i.e. one side feeds the other) to provide the high gain required to generate the desirable harmonics and overdrive. Hope this helps!

@@Blackstaramps I think you missed my point!
At around 50 seconds Tom talked about not being able to A/B the pedal with the tube in or out - I was just saying that I would fully expect the pedal not work at all without the tube! ;)

@@Richiez22908 Yeah - I bought one and I fully believe the tube is absolute integral to the circuit!

@Dave Fox it seems to be real hybrid technology, so real tube preamp with some additional solid state gain stage before the tube, which is a very common way to use tube amps anyway, and my favorite way, when you blend tube clipping with solid state clipping.
