I bought a No. 1 in 2003, a .270 Win. RSI. Great hunting rifle. Depending on conditions, I take other rifles but always have the No. 1 available. It has a 20" barrel and it's shorter than any AR rifle that I have.
Been shooting my #1 300 win mag since I bought it in the early 90's . paired it with 180 Barnes bullets still shooting 1/2 " groups to this day great rifle taken boar to buffalo . All one shot kills still have not recovered a bullet , just gone some where out the other side
Bill Ruger was a single shot enthusiast so he had his engineers design the No 1 because he wanted it. They only build special runs now when they are commisioned by Lipsey's. As far as I can tell the recent 2024 run of No1s is the first run since the onset of covid. I was on a waiting list for 2.5 years and just received one from this years run. The rifle is a classic. There is nothing else like it without going for a Parkwest SD-10 for a lot more money than a Ruger.
Because it’s a darned good niche! My 26” No. 1-B in .270 Winchester is barely longer than a 22” Sako bolt action. If you look on GunBroker or GunsInternational you’ll find that there is an active secondary market and rifles in good condition are not cheap.
A great option is to have RJ Renner convert a No 1 into one of his slim European stalking rifles with iron sights. Scoping a No 1 ruins the look and portability of the gun…

I used to own a Ruger No.1 in .458 Winchester Magnum. That rifle was a beast.

My cousin has a No 1 in 280 Remington and it really likes 140 Partitions, but mulies and pronghorn not so much.
i have a ruger #1 in 280 ACKLEY that i bought from Lee. is a beautiful rifle but ammo is hard to find for it. Im going to start reloading for it
RIP Ruger No 1…
Why would Ruger bother to make an expensive nitch gun ?
