After completing a music degree I was so burned out on the guitar, music, the competition, dissatisfaction with my playing and progress that I walked away from the entire scene for 12 years. I started a new career, didn’t touch the guitar in all that time other than to check on my Instruments from time to time. When I came back to it it was with no professional aspirations, just to have fun with it and continue learning. At the same time I discovered Robben Ford. An amazing, insightful and giving person who has so much to share with us. If you’re a young player listen to this man. It may save you decades in getting to your goals.

Yes, I spend a lot of time in learning notes and scales. Actually the most important in blues is "DYNAMIC", where you play few notes with good expression. You play with high and low volume, fast and slow, sometime we repeate the same notes or part of the phrases to express your feeling. Robben Ford is very good at that. Few notes that you can use will give amazing result once you know how to embelish them with slide, hammer on and pull off. Cheers from Indonesia!

Jerry, just gave your 100th like. I have a physics degree and a civil engineering degree from average schools. I watched the effort it took to major in music or theater and it wasnt so different from mine. Burnout is daunting. I am obsessed with the guitar and music, and think repeatedly about whether I would have to quit working to play at a high level. Labor jobs, desk jobs, and music are all hard on the hands. Thanks for your thoughts. I fear turning what I love to do into a job.

I spoke to Robben backstage after an amazing show he did at the Blue Note in NYC years ago, and told him that his solos, for me were just mesmerizing, because I never know what he's gonna do next, and quick as a flash he goes: 'neither do I'. He likened it to finger painting. He's a very special musician and a warm guy, just great energy to be around.

I’ve heard it said that a great sermon leaves you wondering how the pastor knew all about us. Brother Ford perfectly describes so many of my musical insecurities I struggled with for years
. It’s only been in the last few years that I realized that evidently God didn’t intend for me to play like so many players I admire. If He had I’d be doing that. That realization freed me from the trap of comparing myself to others and now I simply play for the sheer joy of playing and the desire to share that joy with anyone who may be interested. Now when I encounter someone who doesn’t like what I do I sometimes remind them that even Jesus couldn’t please everyone and He was perfect. Since I’m even in the same galaxy with perfect I don’t expect to. Robben, thanks so much for this wisdom!

This video should be shown at every music school all over the world for every aspiring musician to learn from. It is THE best, and most true, comforting, inspiring words I’ve ever heard from a musician.. it’s essentially about finding yourself and being true to yourself as a musician. Everyone doubts their own playing at times.. even Coltrane and Robben Ford. You don’t ever have to be “stronger” than you really are.. you’re good enough just as you are

I love this vid. I first knew of Robben from a Guitar Player magazine Pro's Reply or something in the early '70s where he said Rock music made him physically ill. This was like '74 and the pic supporting this story was one with a SB L5 or something and this long haired guy totally into it as a Blues player. Hadn't heard him but held nothing against him. 2 years later and he's in GP again in a Pop setting and they asked him about the thing before. But, the Joni gig was great. Huge fan of her's. Wish i could blast my Jagmaster (yes a tele, 'paul and sg are here). Just seemed to fit. From Talk To Daughter to Truth, hours spent jamming with RF. One of my fave players of all time and great guy. I Still think "Ford Road" in Ukiah was named after his kin :)

Robben was proactive and ask the owner if he could open for Jimmy Witherspoon then doors started opening.
You can't just sit in your room and practice all day (it helps!) and expect anything to happen.
Go get the life you want, no one is looking to give it to you, book those gigs, play with some musos you're scared to play with, it's where it all starts to happen!

I think people appreciate and gravitate to others that are themselves, do not try to impress and do not apologize for it. Being a good musician has very little to do with being a furious shredder. Honestly, is it not more impressive to watch a guy like Carl Verheyen play a chord melody - it is sure a lot more difficult and takes great chord knowledge and ears and rhythm.
