52-18, on an old school coaster brake with front rim brake fitted. She rolls sweatly on the flat, but some inclines get me out of the saddle and hills more than 10% get me off to push! I've been thinking about dropping down the chain ring to 48, but I'm going to stick at it and just see if I can build more power into my short 62 year old legs.
60-65 gi for hills and high cadence ride, light pedal and great acceleration, easy skids too 66-70 for light pedal but not low max speed 71-72 for flat and some light hills 75-80 for really flat of flats land But i don't recommend high gear inches, i prefer spin to win, better for knees too I use 63.4 and 67.2 gi And remember, top speed is not important, average speed is
@@unclespliff_productions not big on speed, but I feel more in comfortable and in control with a slightly bigger ratio, especially on flats and down hills, 78.2. 44/15 on 28's
My first fixed gear I ever got couple weeks back is a 46 16 not sure if thats a good starter but it don't feel hard on my legs still gotta take it for a full on ride then I'll know for sure but yea and the tires are 25mm 700c real thin I'm definitely more of a masher type then a spinner but I can be both just want that perfect median who knows tho I might already have it just gotta give it a ride.
Hey Shredneck, do you know why they don't simply use 12 as the rear cog. This way the front blade would only need to be 30 or so. Which would save a lot of weight on both.
@@unclespliff_productions ah yeah. but the 16 or 17 cog seem te be standard on fixies. I am guessing it has something to do with the number of teeth that grip the chain.
oh ok i been riding 48×17 for a long time. Just wanted to know if upgrading to a 49t would be better but I think I stick with the 48t instead. Thanks for your opinion
good ratio for sure.....any ratio can work depending on what you're looking for. my only suggestion would be to stick with one ratio for a while to really get used to it

I used to ride 51-16 and have a skid patch 16👌.thats good enough for daily ride.
for sure
I started with 46-16 and now I ride with a 48-16 or sometimes 48-15 I’m working my way up.
how are u now 3 years later?
my bike is default 46-16 but i bought a 52 tooth to replace the 46.

I started 44-18 as well but Im going to play with cogs and cranks now!I love my single speed but I am going to flip the hub and do fixie.

Hello Uncle Shred did you replaced your chain when you switched from 44 16 to 52 16 ?
yup new chain to fit this ratio!
My commute on a daily is 15 miles give or take and i ride 56/18. The only climbs i deal with is freeway overpasses. My city is flat af.
What kind of rear wheel do you have to fit a chainring on both sides?
How do u calculate gear ratio??
52-17 on my fixed gear, mostly flat roads here, but i can reach decent top speed, more than 40 km/hr
Hey Shredneck, do you know why they don't simply use 12 as the rear cog. This way the front blade would only need to be 30 or so. Which would save a lot of weight on both.
i chose this cog - weight is not a factor for me

@@jackcarpenters3759 larger cogs are more efficient, maybe something that has come over from track racing?
What gear do you recommend from these 48×17 or 49×17 for fixed gear
they are very similar - if new to fix gear, go for 48/17

If you wanna feel a drastic change
Downsizing the rear cog is more noticeable than up sizing the front chainring

What about a 53-18 ratio. Or am I tripping on that one? New to the bike game
there's no set rules, although 53 chainring is pretty big - that ratio is pretty big to start out, i rec a 48 x 16
@@unclespliff_productions thank you!
50-12 core line state
What gear do you think is easiest to skid on ?
48/18
