I thought about it, and I'd be more interested in a plot where Kai, Lord Shen and Tai Lung were the only ones brought back; at the START of the movie, Po finds them and because he's so kind hearted, he re-trains them to turn them into a Dragon Warrior team and re-take on The Chameleon at the end. They'd be fighting their old selves. Defeating them would be perfect symbolism for redemption and over coming their flaws.
Kai wanted to be known, as he's been forgotten. Being a Dragon warrior would make him well known.
Lord Shen wasn't that good at Kung Fu; he was no match. He relied on tools and fire works for evil. Becoming a Dragon warrior meant he'd be opened to the world of kindness and protecting people instead of striking fear into people.
Tai Lung would become the Dragon Warrior, just like he wanted to be but instead be taught humility and kindness.

I definetly feel that the plot was quite undercoocked, like I feel like the movie could've been longer, maybe remocing po's dad's for the majority of it could have made space for Po's and Zhen's friendship to grow so the betrayl later in the movie had more inpact, and speaking of zhen, I feel like we could have had more between her and her previous mentor, like the kung fu panda series in general has a whole is kind of a story of parents and their kids, so it's kinda weird to not really see it in this one... Also not related to the plot: kung fu panda 4 had the lowest budget of of all the kung fu panda movies... Why??? Like it's budget is 45 milion behind the previous movie

The scene with Lord Shen bowing to Po was so out of character, that I'm just left to assume he only did it because it would be awkward for everyone else to bow but him.
Shen, a victim of destiny and now conformity.
And as for Zhen, while Tai Lung having finally another chance at the dragon warrior title would have been really good, I don't have a problem with her being chosen myself. The movie after all is apparently a love letter to the first movie, so it makes sense on why another seemingly random character would yet again get the dragon warrior title.
Honestly my biggest problem with the movie was the weak villain. While not a bad one overall, I found her just very shallow even compared to Kai, not even mentioning the likes of Shen and Tai Lung who are almost beautifully tragic and deep.
Talking of Kai, I guess now everyone technically can never truly die. I wasn't even expecting Shen to be in the spirit realm.

Watching 4th make me realize how good the 3rd was. My brain hurts trying to connect so many inconsistency and retcons. Like for example, how the heck did she pull out Lord Kai, the guy who died twice, farther than anyone, cus his spirit itself gone because taking too much chi. Other thing is that, the previous villains out of nowhere bow to Po now? And just gladly return to spirit realm?
Tbf, there's also something off in the 3rd, like how Po can go back in the mortal world while still being mortal, but not the case with Kai or Tai Lung when they got the wuxi finger hold move by Oogway and Po. But that was minor, compared to this 4th entry.
Also, if she literally stole so many kung fu moves, she should be overpowered, with limitless moves to dodge every single Po's attack, but nope. She could easily be defeated by a thief who learned how to use the wisdom staff-_-. Other thing is that, how is her power works? Tai Lung have kung fu, Shen have his cannons, Kai have his reverse chi, but the chameleon (god her name is so long and so generic) have magic power? Based on what? How did she learned that? How magic system works in this kung fu universe? No explanation whatsoever.
Literally full of disappoinment. While megamind 2 can be considered as non canon cus it's not a theatrical release. I feel bad for 4th cus they can't undo it. The damage is done. Now the 5th and 6th gonna have Zhen awkafina in it.
Also, "skadoosh" sounds powerful when Po is using wuxi finger move or when he's about to obliterated his foe. By making him saying that over and over in 4th just making it cringe imo.

Honestly I like the idea that the Chameleon can shape shift and steal “kung-fu” powers from the deceased but I really wished they didn’t made her into a generic psychopath villain. The movie mentioned that the Chameleon uses magic and sorcery yet they never explained how she got her magic or any backstory for us to relate to her on why she wants to conquer the world.
The movie should had revolved on using the Chameleon as a tool and mirror for self-reflection as the final battle and test. Especially for Po, as he is supposed to be a kung-fu master that is still learning about the world. As well other methods to fight and resolve conflicts by learning from others while retaining his own individuality. It feels awkward that Po hadn’t aged enough to pass on his title of the Dragon Warrior unto the next generation (Oogway was incredibly old when he passed on the Dragon Warrior status to Po, yet it felt well-deserved because he had shown to had accumulated so much experience and wisdom throughout his really long life). After all, Po still has much to learn from both the world and himself as shown in the movie that he wasn’t popular in other region and major cities. His final battle with the Chameleon should be a final test of finding his true sense of self, that he is more than just a Dragon Warrior but that he could also be a teacher. That even if he is sad to pass on his Dragon Warrior title to the next generation, he would still be excited to join the ranks of Master Oolong and Shifu as a sensei. Po already has a natural talent to relate with the kids of his village and it’s clear that he enjoyed teaching Kung-fu to his village and the Panda village from the third movie. That even if Po had to pass on his title, he can learn to still be excited about Kung-fu by teaching it and that life consists of many paths as Po went from being an orphan, to a noodle worker, into a clumsy student, mastered kung-fu as the Dragon Warrior, and lastly an experienced teacher who still love kung-fu as much as he did when he was younger.
Speaking of self-reflection, I think Tai Lung truly deserves a redemption arc if he were to be brought back. Honestly, I think bringing back Lord Shen and Kai was a slap to the face for the older fans. Firstly, Kai was truly eliminated in the third movie as Po simply vanished him from existence during their fight in the sprit world. So it made no sense for Kai to return nor make an appearance when the Chameleon was resurrecting spirts. Secondly, Lord Shen does not deserve a redemption arc as he is petty and a huge megalomaniac. Not to mention the fact that he almost killed all pandas to extinction, that obviously should had gotten rid of his chance of ever getting a redemption arc. So it was pretty ridiculous when Lord Shen bowed to Po in the movie, I felt that was extremely out of character. But for Tai Lung, he gotten too prideful of himself because he was told and trained to become the next Dragon Warrior. Thus that was his downfall when he wasn’t meant to be the Dragon Warrior, so obviously his sense of self was destroyed and the feeling of betrayal from Shifu and Oogway just sparked his rage.
I think the movie would had gotten more in-depth if only Tai Lung was resurrected instead of all the past kung-fu warriors, especially when Tai Lung was a huge threat in all the areas and surely the Chameleon would had sought after his powers. By using the Chameleon to resurrect only Tai Lung into the physical world and have his power stolen from the Chameleon, this would begin Tai Lung’s new path of redemption and self-discovery along with Po. Now that Tai Lung is powerless, he’ll have to relearn kung-fu but taught under Po’s teachings and experiences. Through this process, Tai Lung learns to be humble and discover his own sense of self while he travels with Po to reach the city where the Chameleon resides. Just before the final battle between Po and the chameleon, Tai Lung would have his own battle with the chameleon as she shape shifts into him. He has to fight against his old self with his new experiences and kung-fu. Throughout the battle, Tai Lung realizes how explosive and empty his old self used to be as through he was fighting against a cornered and dangerous beast. Although Tai Lung is able to defeat his old self, the Chameleon still overcame him with her other abilities as he was tired out from his fight against his old self. Thus the Chameleon focuses on Po, but Tai Lung gets to see his father as Shifu rushed to locate both Po and Tai Lung because he was told that Tai Lung had returned. Tai Lungs tries to hide himself from his father, but Shifu quickly embraced him as he saw how much Tai Lung changed for the better and fought with his complete sense of self. Now seeing that Shifu is proud of him, Tai Lung can relax and vanish to the spirit world knowing that Po is the true Dragon Warrior and that he finally made his father proud of him after defeating his inner turmoil and found his true sense of self.
I really want a redemption arc for Tai Lung and to see Shifu hugs his son before they depart once again, but on good terms.

my biggest issue was we didn't even get a fleshed out antagonist as we did in the other 3, which is what makes the movies plot so huge. hell, even Kai had a whole backstory on who he was and why he was running around stealing chi. with the Chameleon, all we get is that she was rejected from learning Kung Fu because of her size from every master around, which is obviously a crazy excuse when you take into account that if she went to the valley of peace, she could learn from there since Mantis is smaller than her but knows great Kung Fu, so she just steals it instead. My other issue is... how in the hell did she even KNOW of the past villains? People in the city didn't even know who the dragon warrior was, so how could she have even figured out all of Po's past villains if she was never even around? Maybe I missed that part being explained but idk. all of it seemed so off. definitely a very MID movie

She came from a city. Po comes from a village. There are major differences in where you live, and no one had even heard of the Dragon Warrior. The city was full of criminals and thieves, that’s the parallel of Po and the Chameleon. Po believed in changing for the better, Chameleon didn’t care about others, so she remained selfish and ambitious. She had the same problem the other villains had, except she refused to consider if she was in the wrong. It’s a shame Po never tried to confront her about it again but she ended up going into the spirit realm where maybe she can reform in her ways. Chameleon also wanted Kung Fu skill so you’d think she would’ve done her research to know about the masters she was targeting, it was quite literally her goal…

    • @teknik9015
      @teknik9015 5 месяцев назад +1

@@Im-brain-dead-but while I agree them being parallel to each other, to say she had the same issue as every other villain is pushing it a little far. Every other villain had a justifiable reason. Tai Lung wanted to make Shifu proud and was promised something that wasn’t destined to him. Shen tried to change his fate by causing genocide on all pandas and was later banished by his parents who he had thought would be proud he was able to find an escape. Kai felt betrayed by his brother in arms and his memories of him across China were destroyed, so he sought to do the same to Oogway. The chameleon was just shown to seek out everyone’s kung fu just because she was rejected. We also don’t know how she even mastered sorcery. Everyone had backstories on why they’re threatening. Tai Lung mastered the 1000 scrolls, Shen going through villages and raiding it for metal and building weapons with his army, and Kai understanding what can be given can also be taken by reversing the method of giving Chi. Her character is so underdeveloped that it doesn’t even feel right. Even the questions Po had for her didn’t even get answered. The fact she knew of Po’s villains never was answered. How did she know all of that? We really did need the villain to be more developed in this case. She was unique with a great design but her character was strongly lacking.
Tl;dr the chameleon was still very underdeveloped, the plot was a mess, and there were several questions unanswered. It needed more attention to detail.

Not apologizing for the movie as I agree with everything else full-heartedly that this is the weakest movie in the series, and a major missed opportunity. But the way everyone has been dumping all over Zhen is getting pretty overblown.

a fully rewritten review of a poorly worded comment from before the edit:
Kung Fu Panda 4 is a disappointing installment in the franchise.
the new villain, the chameleon, felt like a missed opportunity. no backstory, no connection to the established characters, just a generic and uninspired antagonist with a motive that felt like an afterthought - stealing kung fu skills because of some body-shaming from dojos. really? it's hard to believe this was the best they could come up with.
remember the powerful motivations that fueled the antagonists in the previous films? Tai Lung, fueled by a desire to be the Dragon Warrior and make Shifu proud. Shen, seeking to claim his parents' legacy despite being an outcast. Kai, driven by vengeance against Oogway. these were villains with depth, clear goals, and compelling backstories. the chameleon, on the other hand, doesn't even know what a Dragon Warrior is. it's like the writers forgot the recipe that made the earlier villains so memorable.
the film is drowning in jokes. don't get me wrong; humor is part of Kung Fu Panda's charm, but this time, it felt forced. every 2 minutes, punchline after punchline stole the spotlight, leaving little room to focus on the plot. I missed the perfect balance the earlier films struck between comedy and heart.
Zhen, the new side character, seemed promising, but the lack of meaningful scenes and inconsistent development made it hard to care about her journey. I wanted to care, but the movie just didn't give me a reason to.
also what happened to the Furious Five? almost nonexistent throughout the film, only to show up conveniently at the end. it felt like a desperate attempt to salvage an otherwise dry storyline.
perhaps the most disappointing aspect was what they did to Kai, Tai Lung, and Shen. these were characters with depth, each with their own stories and motivations. Kai, full of hatred and hardheaded, left silent and ignored. Tai Lung, once proud and arrogant, barely makes a negative remark to Po as if he's bound by a Disney contract. and the worst has got to be Shen, who committed literal genocide and scarred Po for life, inexplicably paying respect to him in the end with no explanation at all. it felt like a betrayal of the legacy these characters once held.
and don't even get me started about the inconsistencies with the plot.
the thing that bothers me the most was the idea of Po passing down the title of Dragon Warrior to someone else so soon. Po, who hasn't held the title for more than five years, is expected to become some "great spiritual grand master leader" despite having yet so much to learn about himself and the world. this rushed character development feels very forced, especially with the successor, Zhen, already introduced and teased in the same movie.
I'm not a writer, but I think the idea of the 4th and 5th movies focusing on the search for a new successor could've been a more engaging plotline, allowing for a gradual exploration of Po's growth and the discovery of a worthy successor.
in the end, Kung Fu Panda 4 felt like a missed opportunity to add a meaningful chapter to a beloved series. despite what people say about the 3rd movie, I do think it is a pretty good and well deserved sequel, and this movie just makes it even more noticeable. I'm not gonna have any high hopes for the next installment.
4/10, with a franchise like Kung Fu Panda they really could've done something so much better

Why are people mad that Shen respects Po? I mean at the end of the 2nd movie he was clearly in awe that Po mastered inner peace. Not just the physical part of Po deflecting his cannon shots, but him overcoming the hardship he (Shen) imposed on Po. Especially when it was Much more than the hardship Shen had Imposed on himself. He literally asks Po. Basically begging Po "How did you find peace, Took away your parents, Everything. I scared you for life." Shen clearly wanted to learn how to achieve inner peace but wasn't willing to change. In his last moments he lets himself be killed by the mast possibly to try and escape/ control destiny (Although like in most stories with destiny, you can't change it since he, a warrior of black and white let himself die while fighting a warrior of black and white. So either way you look at it he fulfilled the prophecy). Also, he's had a lot of time to reflect in his afterlife and move on, which was the last thing Po told him to do to achieve inner peace. So it shouldn't be too surprising that with no other options, he'd actually try moving on from his past and change as a person. Also for Tai-Lung, it's possible that he also realized the message of the first movie that he doesn't need a scroll or title to be special and that he is already special. The one that makes the least sense is General Kai since he already had 500 years in the Spirt realm before the others showed up and still retained his ways. Also, he was destroyed in the spirit realm so his soul should be destroyed or in afterlife afterlife. Although I guess they can say that Po didn't actually destroy him and his dragon did something else to him. Also for them going back willingly, their story has ended. I mean Shen let himself die, so I don't see why he'd resit now and Tai-Lung has accepted that Po is the rightful successor to Oogway and again it's quite possible he's come to accept that he is special without the scroll or title. Kai, I guess since he got his butt thoroughly handed to him by Po without Po trying he probably decided it was best not to try and fight an even more experienced and stronger Po, Which if you don't think any of them learned anything is still a good reason for them to go back at least begrudgingly. Also Doesn't the Chameleon still have her powers, can't she still steal their abilities and Chi? She could probably just pull a Kai and come back after absorbing his powers and stealing the Chi and abilities of everyone else.

I just watched the movie and i have to agree with a lot of what you said.
the animations and visuals are stunning and i really enjoyed them. my biggest criique is the ending. i doubt that Tai Lung would have just walked off without atleast punching Po. that guy trained his whole life to be the dragon warrior and is defined by wrath and revenge. Lord Shen would have also probably tried to kill Po on sight. I also didn't liked how that fox just became the dragon warrior instead of one of the furious five or another kung fu master and it was quite obvious from the beginning that she is going to be it at the end.
going back to Tai Lung, i enjoyed the lines of dialogue he had and found them amusing and overall his screen time was okay, though it just wasn't his character. he felt like a whole other person and nothing like the beast from the first movie.
over all, i found the movie enjoyable and maybe i would rewatch it some time later, but its just not nearly as good as the other kung fu panda movies. I laughed at a few scenes, but for the majority of the time i felt no emotions at all. i think its a decent movie of itself, but a very weak kung fu panda movie.

Because of the other movies, this movie was REALLY down. I saw another comment here, but like theirs if you can find it.
It should have been the old villains WORKING with Po in that sense. With the furious five of course, I can see the Fox working with The Chameleon all the way in the end until she realizes, instead of being with Po the entire time..
Also wth with choosing a new Dragon Warrior?? I bet Po hasn’t been the Dragon Warrior for ten years while Oogway was for almost 500 years!!! Shifu forced it that much??
This could have done a better plot, maybe that Po isn’t READY to change just yet.. what if Shifu just mentions that one day Po may have to change.. and Po doesn’t want that.. so Po finds himself in a Journey.. and stumbles into the three villains, they have this heartfelt moment with the furious five and they all together work against the Chameleon.. in that sense.. and in the end.. yes maybe Tai Lung can be offered to be the next Dragon Warrior, or accepts Po in a much more BETTER way.. with the other villains.
With all of this, Po realizes that all of them moved on from being things they wanted from Po.. and Po needs to move on with that too.. there fore setting off where Po makes a very timey skip journey to accept CHANGE in that reality.
And then the 5th movie and focus more on a character that Po has met before the next movie starts.. and it’s the fox again.

Personally, the movie wasn't as good as what came before. I put it just around the level of 3. But it was still a solid film at the end of the day.
I think fans going in expecting a ton of fan service and cameos from past films are gonna be disappointed since it's such a small part of 4. Tai Lung is barely in it and they put him front and center on the poster.
Some people didn't like Zhen. In my opinion she was one of my favorite parts about 4. Overall the movies plot felt a little rushed, the main villain isn't really in it that much compared to past kung fu panda films.
Other than that you still have a highly entertaining film. It's crazy to think how old this franchise is. Seeing po become the dragon warrior while I was kid to now as an adult seeing him be a teacher. It's kinda surreal.
Def worth seeing and I hope they make more! I can see Kung Fu panda 4 being apperciated more over time. Cause it's marketing was a bit misleading to some fans expecting one final hurrah for all the villains. With some of them only getting a min of screen time.

Here are my pros, animation very good, jack black doing a cover of hit me baby one more time amazing, Zen is a good character, the cover for crazy train was cool, the fights scence very impressive. Now the cons Tai Long had speaking roles instead of Shen and Kai which was upsetting. I can believe Tai Long being more mellow in the spirit realm because he lost his purpose and ambition being the dragon warrior. But seriously Shen and Kai have nothing to say to Po. Laaammme. The Chameleon is a cool character with a unique ability but her story of why she doing this because no one wanted to teach her kung fu was just up stupid. She seem like she was like Po being a fan girl of kung fu only to be let down by the people she idol. But there no show but tell and that’s lazy writing. Even in the kung fu panda series the dragon knight did show but no tell of the weasels back story. Way better than Megamind sequel.

So here's my idea for how I would have run this movie:
Firstly, the furious five don't necessarily have to be in it for it to be good, in fact, considering the Chameleon can steal chi and skill, it's likely better to fight her with a smaller party.
Second, don't bring back Shen and Kai. If Chameleon is looking for people who are amazing at martial arts, she would definitely bring back Tai Lung, but Shen was more an inventor, and conquerer, and Kai was barely known. The only people who knew Kai were Oogway, and the masters Kai ended up absorbing. Plus, Kai was kinda spirit exploded?
We can set the movie up with Chameleon stealing Tai Lungs chi, and let the audience know she's going for Po next, because as the dragon warrior and a panda, he would have a lot for her to steal. Tai Lung is let go, as he isn't a threat anymore.
Over the next few weeks, Tai Lung makes it to the jade temple to find Po for a rematch. He knows he lost the ability to fight, but his stubbornness is meant to shine through here. Po defeats him easily, and asks Tai Lung questions. Tai Lung will keep trying to fight him for a while, before finally accepting defeat. He will tell Po about the Chameleon, her ability to steal chi, and that she's coming for Po next. Po offers to retrain Tai Lung, to which Tai Lung begrudgingly agrees, swearing to himself to kill Po once he gets his skills back. Ping hears about Po going on another journey, and insists on going with him, offering to provide the food for their journey. Po, Ping, and Tai Lung take the next few week to travel back to the city the Chameleon lives at, with Po training Tai Lung along the way. Tai Lung is taking the training very well, and is at a respectable skill level in fighting. Still nothing compared to how good he was before, but he could beat standard guards fairly easily.
The party see's that there's some kind of identification process to get into the city, and to prevent Chameleon from knowing Po was in the city, they'd have to find some way to sneak in. This is where the party meets Zhen, who agrees to help them in, in exchange for a favor she needs done in the inside. Something she needs some extra muscle for, as she isn't very good at fighting. Zhen sneaks them in, and cashes in her favor. I haven't thought of what her favor would be, but it would be something illegal that Tai Lung has no dilemma with doing, but Po would be very hesitant. During the fighting that the favor would entail, we see that while Zhen isn't outright skilled in hand-to-hand combat, she knows her way around a fight, and is very good at using her environment to her advantage.
Afterwards, Ping would chastise Po for doing something so immoral, and keep ripping into him (verbally) until he starts crying. While Po is crying, Ping would walk behind him, and lash Po with his tongue, revealing that Ping was the Chameleon the whole time, and was just waiting for a time when Po was completely unguarded. This, combined with Chameleon revealing to Po that she has to attack the people she copies, is meant to push Po over the edge. Now he knows that Chameleon can perfectly pretend to be even his loved ones, but that she had also attacked his father to do it. Chameleon mocks Po, and says if he wants his Kung Fu back, he can come to her palace to try and take it, knowing full well Po isn't capable of fighting anymore.
Tai Lung and Zhen find Po, now unable to fight. Tai Lung takes this opportunity to start attacking Po, yelling things at him like "Why are you so weak? Weren't you the Dragon Warrior?" Po is consumed by grief, and was mostly letting himself get hit, until Tai Lung insults his dads, and Po instinctually puts him in a Wuxi finger hold. While keeping Tai Lung in the hold, he admits that he's scared, now knowing that he can't fight. That even if he goes to the Chameleon, he knows his chances of winning are very low. "And what did you think your chances of beating me were?" That snaps Po out of his funk. he remembers back even when he didn't think he was the Dragon Warrior, he fought Tai Lung knowing full well he probably wouldn't win. Po makes up his mind to go fight the Chameleon, and offers to work together with Tai Lung to win their Kung Fu back. He agrees, and says they will fight once they have all their skills back. Zhen tags along with them because she feels bad for Po I guess? I haven't thought about Zhen too much.
All of them go to the Chameleon's palace, and begin the final fight. No surprise, Po and Tai Lung are getting easily beaten to a pulp, and Zhen is doing her best as support. Mainly by throwing miscellaneous objects at Chameleon, and attacking her when Po and Tai Lung need time to get up. Eventually, Chameleon knocks down Po and Tai Lung by the stairs of her palace, and Zhen takes this opportunity to tackle her down the stairs. Po and Tai Lung are both groggy, but they get up and are reminded of their fight, seeing Chameleon hit every stair on the way down. They both make their way down, watching Zhen fight Chameleon. Again, they are reminded of their own fight, seeing Zhen make perfect use of her environment to fight on par with an opponent leagues above her. Chameleon manages to make it close to Zhen, and knocks her out after taking moderate damage. Immediately, Po rushes in to protect Zhen. Still unsuccessfully, he attacks to fight her. She taunts him, saying he's no longer the dragon warrior since she's stolen that from him. Po flashes back once again to his fight with Tai Lung, remembering the message of the Dragon Scroll. There's nothing special about being the Dragon Warrior, it's just you. Upon remembering this, Chi floods out from Po, and his old skill returns. Po is now fighting on par with Chameleon, and Tai Lung asks him how he did that. Po reminds him about the Dragon Scroll, and after some time, Tai Lung accepts the lesson himself. Now both Tai Lung and Po are back to full strength, and together they defeat Chameleon. Tai Lung accepts Po as the Dragon Warrior, but now see's him as a rival rather than an enemy. Po notes Zhen's talent, and how similar the way she fought was to his early way of fighting, and asks her if she wants to be his student. Zhen, looking for an escape from a life of crime, accepts.
The movie ends with Zhen, Tai Lung, and Po all returning to Shifu at the Jade Palace. Tai Lung learned humility, Zhen is set up as possibly the next dragon warrior. The three grow into something like friends, but also rivals to set up KFP5.

Add: I was actually quite sad that this movie didn't live up to the saga the last 3 left behind. I genuinely like the villain's design. It was one of the reasons why I was looking forward to the movie after seeing the teaser.
