So basically a wok?
“A real innovation”? *looks at my Wok*
AGREE ❗️❗️❗️That thing’sLIKE A WOK. She didn’t realize/knew that???? Weird...
I have seen a wok this tall.
shouldn't just cheaper to just buy a wok from kitchen supply? it has build-in "fry wall"
Way more practical
But that's just another pan which takes up a lot of space, this does not
Woks don’t have good flat surface area. If you’re making a steak, ideally you want to use a wide pan. This prevents the splatter but still gives you the surface area to cook.
@@micntr And even if you eliminate this factor, plenty of people are not willing to throw away their old frying pans to replace them
@@axeavier Yeah. This is a giant silicone thing that takes up space and isn't actually a pan.
I'm amused that Lisa has disqualified many frying pans in her day for having an 1/8" higher sidewall than competing pans yet this monstrously tall fry wall is "surprisingly easy to work with."
Hahah. Busted.
Reality
Not really. You'll notice she wasn't cooking just anything.
She was cooking things that a higher walled skillet/saute pan wouldn't actually have problems with.
Like reductions, eggs, steaks(depending on how they're cooked) etc.
You'll also notice that ATK often uses a dutch oven to fry in......
was thinking the same thing as I was watching
hmmmm, make a fry pan look like a wok
Buy it, use it once, drip oil on stove when removing, drip oil on floor between stove & sink, now try washing / cleaning greasy sink, stove and floor. See how it wallows around in drain rack and never dries. Where and how to store? It's truly a single use product.
I store mine next to the stove rolled up and standing in a 2 cup glass measuring cup!
Danke!!
But ATK says it's AMAZING! So clearly you're just doing it wrong. 🙄
@@bentoutofshape6319 : You have a large kitchen huh? Old 1936 one bedroom house with 14" to right of electric range top and 0" to left, microwave with range vent fan above. I have near as much kitchen space as a frog has wool. Kitchen gadgets here must be small, very useful, as multitasking as possible and must not compete with space for cookware & dinnerware. My only permanent countertop appliances are toaster and coffee maker. All other appliances are stored on shelving in the one upstairs room. When this old house was built it didn't have electricity, running water or sanitary. Water was bailed from a hand dug well, a outhouse was the toilet and it was heated by wood cookstove and a small coal fired heater in the front room. It is more modern now but still little floor space. Best thing about this house is it is on my farm.
@@CaptainFabulous84 : Probably. Looks like the thing would make a better hula skirt (one size fits most) than how they're marketing it. ☺
"...but wait! There's more! If you act now..."
LoL!!!
Isn't THAT amazing!
Order before midnight tonight!!!
...if you act now we will send you a splash wall for your 🚽 absolutely free!
@@dgdigital2659 Don't know how old you are, but if you haven't heard it before, listen to "What do you want from life" by The Tubes.
I think you would really like it. You have to listen close, starts off 'ok' and, well, you just have to listen. A true American Classic.
The number of reviews complaining about melted material has convinced me to save my money.
Silicone shouldn’t melt. Must be counterfeits.
Silicone looses it's rigidity at about 500° but won't melt until you reach temperatures well over a 1000 degrees.
I’m not very conceived about this. 🤨 You need to show us the whole works. From the beginning of the cooking to the end of showing us the fry wall after getting it out of the dishwasher. Show us the way the fry wall gets a transfer from the stove to the sink and then finally to the dishwasher. We need to see the pros and the cons in the whole process. In that way, I’ll see whether is it worth my money or not. Also, I’m no fool so please don’t edit the video to make your fry wall look fresh. Mark/put a number or a letter on that fry wall from the beginning so I’ll know it’s still the same one when it comes out of the dishwasher.
It’s an America’s Test Kitchen, isn’t it? So, please test it out for us so we’ll see whether is it worth our money or not. 🤨🧐🤔
Did you forget that April 1 has come and gone?
Just get a splash partition or a wok.
Do you hate cleaning your kitchen?
Love being the butt of your friends’ jokes?
Then buy one of these… 🤣🤣
My questions about this:
You said that it is "surprisingly easy" to work around the fry wall to turn and stir foods, but I wonder just how easy.
OK, you can put it in the dishwasher, but it seems like you would have to fold or bunch it up so that it doesn't take up too much space in the dishwasher, but then how clean will it get?
As little as I like this gadget, it will get clean just fine, even folded, as it has enough body not to cling to itself, thus allowing the deluge of recyclying soapy water to purge it, but it would certainly help to rinse the majority of oil off in a sink first to give the dishwasher an easier time.
ATK credibility drops with this item!
My thoughts exactly, unfortunately. This felt like a straight up paid advertisement. Usually they do a much better job of pretending.
I was just frying chicken yesterday and screaming the whole time from splatters😩😢 also hate when it’s all over the stove and whatever it’s next to🤔
Agree, although I don't get burned myself when I look at my ceramic top stove after, I just know that have a half hour cleaning job ahead of me.
you are doing something wrong if that's happening lol
@@staticoverlay so what do you do in order to prevent splatters?
@@KatarinaS. There are a few things, patting the meat dry with a paper towel might be necessary sometimes although I usually don't, water droplets flashing to steam quickly is one of the main causes of splattering oil while frying. Using too much oil in too small a pan, or excessive heat maybe with too little oil are also potential causes. You should also always lay the meat down at an angle away from you and not agitate the oil more than necessary. Some mess is always unavoidable but I can tell you for sure that if it's spitting big drops of hot oil everywhere and onto your hands you're not doing something right lol
@@staticoverlay lol Well I recently saw a video of someone frying chicken with the top on and realized it cooks a lot quicker that way and crispier..However, condensation forms so when I lift the top to turn the pieces of chicken......we all know oil & water don’t mix therefore screaming and dodging splatters ..That is all🙃🤓
What’s wrong with a pot?
I LOVE my Frywall. Wish I had a dishwasher to throw it in but alas, I don’t. Works great. No splatter on the stove. Have told friends about it and they have also purchased it and love it.
Why does everyone assume that everyone else has a dishwasher. If I had to wash that thing by hand, I'd be pissed.
Even with a dishwasher that would take up alot of room. Can't leave it folded up to wash.
I have a dishwasher but sometimes wash my Frywall by hand. It's very easy and quick.
Maybe this is a great product, hmmm. But this feels more like a commercial, disingenuous, not the quality content I expect from ATK. If this had been a product review against other " low to no " splatter devices it would have been ok.
Cool. A silicon wok
Most of my splatter situations are contained quite well by the screen splatter guard. This seems like just one more thing I have to find space in a drawer for.
I totally agree! One more thing to clean... ugh.
They posted this same vid just a few daZe ago.
I had to get rid of mine because the mesh is a nightmare to clean when it comes to caked on grease
My Oxo splatter screen pretty much does nothing and my stove grates weigh what seem like 40 pounds each. I might give this a whirl.
@@Nocturne22 try goo gone kitchen spray
The problem I find with those mesh splatter screens is that they still trap the heat and steam in, so the thing you sought to fry is really steamed in oily-ness.
Why does ATK put their recommended products behind a paywall on their web site? Not even an hour ago I was searching for new kitchen item that I need. Right away I went to ATK to see what they recommend and there is a paywall. Sure you want subscribers but for pages where you are making money from referrals wouldn't you want people to visit and click through? At least you are making a small percentage from what that person purchases.
That has been their model for a long, long time. The goal of the ATK website is to offer a few teaser recipes but herd the viewers to subscribe to get full recipes.
@@borderlineiq I can understand it for the recipes. They don't have a way to make money except the subscriptions for that. I'm talking about product recommendations where they have affiliate links to make money from the viewer clicking through and making a purchase.
Lisa! Yea! We need more Lisa !!! Love her reviews - I’m going to check out the fry wall !
People will definitely be kicking themselves in regret for missing the opportunity to buy and invest in cryptocurrency
For real crypto is profitable
I wanted to trade Crypto but got confused by the fluctuations in price
That won't bother you, if you trade with professionals like Henry Brown trade options
I heard that his strategies are really good!
Yeah my first investment with Henry Brown trade's earned me profit of over $25,530 US dollars ever since then he has been delivering
That looks like useless junk.
But what about sizing?
My husband will move out if I buy this. But- I want it. lol
Dollar store?
How much did the company pay for a one minute shout out from ATK? if you are that pressed about cleaning your kitchen, order pizza. This is absurd.
I don't think the black and white edits helped, I was very confused with what was going on.
Don't waste money on this people have invented the wok
Do NOT get this if you have a gas stove. The heat coming up around the pan will melt it in seconds. And yes, I'm speaking from experience.
I've used it on my gas stove frequently for years with no issues
This is literally just a wok? But worse?
Looks like a cone of shame.
They did Lisa wrong with this one. I love Lisa on Americans test kitchens but this one isn’t her thinking or wanting I hope. A simpler flat round metal one works better and does the job better. Lisa do a review on xtrema/cookware
With just a little bracing it could pull double duty as a cone of shame for your dog.
I find this amazingly ludicrous. A $6 splatter screen works wonderfully, stores flat, and cleans easily.
I’ve not had good luck with mine. I still get splatters all over. I must be doing it wrong?
@@sarahwestling9438 you’re not wrong. The problem with splatter screens is that most only stop part of the splatter. And the ones that are tight enough to stop most or all splatter also trap steam, which condenses and drips into the hot oil, causing more splatter...waste of time.
Good luck stirring anything while the splatter screen is in place, let alone 32 cups of kale in a 12 inch sauté pan.
@@Rob-df6py -- I've been using splatter screens for over 50 years and never once experience one that traps steam. Seems to me that steam is small enough to get through a screen of any type. We have a small cottage with very limited storage space and I'm guessing that we aren't the only ones with that problem. And someone else commented about doing 32 cups of Kale. I've never in my long life done 32 cups of Kale except maybe when helping my Grandfather who was the head Chef at a very large, popular hotel, and is the one that taught me to use a splatter screen. As for flipping a burger it takes a few seconds and I always hold the screen above whatever I'm frying as I turn it. Sorry, to each his/her own, but this is not for me.
Folks, you can do one yourself. Do like the Japanese, take the ideas and make better in your own. You can make from aluminum and have one side open, so you can adjust for different size pans. Just telling, you can do it. Easy , easy
My mom was raised in Japan. She'll be 83 this year.
Who needs yet another kitchen gadget to clean, store, dig out from the cupboards, etc.
And... perhaps "pleat" it so, in order to save a little storage space, it can be folded up when not in use.... Similar to a Japanese geisha fan. 😉
Just looked for a video to see what u mean ..interesting
If you make one from aluminum, it will become a huge heat sink and conduct the heat from the pan to the top of the shield. Touch it with your hand or arm, and you will end up with a burn that will require a trip to emergency.
@@barcham ok, the material can be cartoon or even you can make with silicone. The idea is no spend money with BS. Anyway, who really need this crap, maybe only people that think like you. Paper is the solution my friend. Thousand years later, the idea haven’t changed.
Need to put it back on the dog that it came off of.
Were you sponsored to make this?
I decided making pot stickers wasn't worth the mess. I looked up fry shields on _CI_ and saw this one. I can attest that it is _great_ and pot stickers are back on the menu. It rolls up for storage and isn't a floppy mess you'll never find a spot for.
A cone of shame for rookie cooks
Been using the 12 inch one for 3 years now and love it! And they hold up great!
Really? Are there some cons that you can tell us about? Like what @Gerard Johnson said in this comment section? Was any of his statements true or it never happened to you? 🤔
@@danieldulivero I will say it is floppy, and at first had found that awkward. But the fact it keeps the grease of off my "shows everything" black stove top. And he was right about storage until Intel I realized that I could roll it up and slip it in a 2 cup glass measuring cup. I use it daily so it sits on my counter next to my stove. One thing this thing is awesome for is sautéing greens. It will easily hold two pounds of spinach.
As far as dripping oil, well just use your common sense and life will be good!
Can't I use my Dutch oven for the tasks that she used this fry wall for?
Indeed you can, or a deep pressure cooker, or a stock pot that has a substantial base.
@@kappadappa Respectfully, that is ridiculous. Frying is using high temperatures and steam is going right up away from the heat, not hoverin in like some fog.
I'll never buy it
If (and I do not know) ATK is getting a cut of the profit, this is not an unbiased review, it is a commercial.
Based on 56 seconds into the video there is A LINK TO BUY ONE in the upper right hand corner.
Yeah, it’s a commercial. 😏
What’s wrong with a pot?
@@sandrah7512 this literally simulates a pot. So why not use a pot?
Hard pass on this one. Laughably ridiculous. I can hardly believe ATK is endorsing this item.
Or you can buy a wok
LOL! It may work really well, but sorry, It looks ridiculous. I'm afraid that Gordon Ramsay may walk into my kitchen and yell, "What the fook?"
What are Lan’s thoughts on the fry wall?
Is it really that difficult to spend 20 seconds to wipe the range top down with a sponge? This looks silly. It is most likely a paid promotion.
At that point, why not just fry in a deeper/larger pot? You no longer have the advantage of letting steam out over the low sides of the pan, so I don't see much reason not to just switch vessels. This also seems fiddly, needlessly hard to clean, and prone to being knocked over.
How incredibly dumb and and impractical. :/ This might be hard to hear but a good nontoxic cleaner spray and a wet cloth after cooking will go a long away.
Love it pretty much. It's a must for my kitchen. Thanks!!!
Mine too. 3 years now!
never.
Absolutely awesome craft in your food
Totally loved it
They make screens to cut down / eliminate splatter.
I don’t see me buying this.
I'll wait until the price drops. I do hate grease splatter. I get it even with the screen though not as much.
Think I'll stay w/ the ol' splatter screen that just pops in the dishwasher afterwards.
This thing doesn't look like it would do well in the dishwasher?
Reviews says this thing melts.
3 years of daily use has not melted yet.
@@bentoutofshape6319 "3 years of daily use has not melted yet." Maybe you aren't frying.. steaming in oil is not the same. Does your pan even get to 400 degrees?

@@bentoutofshape6319 "do you fry at 400 degrees? I wouldn't want eat anything you cooked then" So you never actually fry.. bias confirmed.
@@frosted1030 anything over 375 you should not be using a pan.
I'm amazed no one has realized this just turns a skillet into a flappy two piece flat bottom wok
I think we all have, but are too polite to mention a wok in its flaccid state.
This is a great product to buy when you've exhausted all other ways of spending your money on dumb things!
Good one!
Seems like a great idea-the only problem is when you’re frying, if you don’t have a strong exhausy fan, that same fat, instead of splattering onto your stovetop, will travel as a “fat”cloud and rain fat all over your kitchen floors. A real nightmare. I have a good fan, but it’s one of those retractable ones that’s too low to reach over the wall’s height. Believe me, it’s easier to clean your stove top than having to scrub all your kitchen floor. A nightmare and a sliding risk.
I’m so curious. Wouldn’t the fat just splatter on the sides of the Frywall (just like it would have splattered on the stove)? Could you explain why it would have to float out as a cloud? Thank you!
So not even trying to seem like a cooking show anymore? That was nothing but a commercial.
Wall is all
Have a blast! That is why I don’t eat out. People nowadays are so plastic, it is unbelievable! How in the world people don’t use their head to think that plastic is bad for cooking, and bad for the environment!
The annoying this is that it isn’t compatible with my carbon steel pan so I have to buy a separate pan for it. It burnt when I tried to make spinach with it
A flat bottom narrow wok should serve the same purpose and be better to work with I believe.
So basically it's like a high tech wok? 🤔😆
Now use the fry wall to fry up a wall of french fries.
It's a scam, that material will probably melt.
Seriously? I just watched a review here that was complaining about a 1" height difference making a dutch oven too tall to work with comfortably. This seems gimmicky and I'd be surprised if they weren't compensated for the plug.
The Frywall is seriously one of my most favorite tools that I have bought for our kitchen! We have been using ours for over two years and it’s still in great shape. This thing keeps our stove so much cleaner.
Anyone else think that’s weird?
Shall you just use a wok instead?
I haven't used anything in years but used to use a round pan screen
I think a rondeau or high wall "chicken fryer" would take care of the splatters and have a greater surface with which to sear things. Most silicon things I have ever purchased stain and are hard to clean and don't get much use until thrown in the recycling.
I don't think silicone is traditionally recyclable. I think you have to send it to a special place to be recycled. This is just a friendly heads up, recycling can be super confusing.
@@k20nutz I wondered about that. Thank you for letting me know. It's a shame to release something in the world that cannot be recycled and will never decompose. I wish ATK will think carefully about what they recommend.
@@strll3048 it's really aggravating. I tried buying my groceries without plastic and I couldn't. I went for the paper/metal options when I could, but plastic is everywhere!
It’s essentially a flat bottom wok
Why not just buy a wok?
Umm...no.
McManus has jumped the shark
A little bit cleaner is all it does
Great news! Without your demo and discussion I’d never try it.
Uh, yeah. But doesnt it take up your whole cooking surface?
I have all 3 sizes of these and they’re brilliant. Don’t let their silly appearance put you off... they really work.
@Joanna London • In the past, I've read reviews that similar silicone products start to smell of the foods they have been used with and that the smell only gets wirse over time. Could you speak to this, please? Thanks. 🖖
@@yvonnetomenga5726 Yes, to an extent that’s sometimes true. I’ve stopped putting them in the dishwasher because I don’t like the lingering detergent smell. I don’t mind hand washing these because they are so effective at containing splatter. I let them dry (open) completely overnight and they are just fine the next day. Totally worth the effort and the slight learning curve it takes to get them positioned in pans. 😆
@@Joanna_L • Thanks. That's very helpful. I have the mesh screen splatter guard, but since you need to take it off to turn anything, there goes its effectiveness.
@@yvonnetomenga5726 I agree. I rarely use my flat splatter guards anymore.
How disappointing. Now we’re hawking crap. Disastrous.
I simply use a high wall pan to do my frying. No need to have another gadget hanging around, good idea though..
Basically you will pay $29 for the privilege of cleaning fry wall instead the stove. Im not going to run dishwasher just so I could clean fry wall.
Ridiculously expensive for what it is. Purchasing one of each size here in Canada would cost close to $100 total. I can get the same result by using a cover on my frying pan and if I really want to leave what I am cooking open to the air, I can simply cook it in a deeper pot, such as a stock pot. The same applies if I am cooking a large quantity of kale or spinach. These probably cost less than $5 each to make, and they could sell all three sizes in a set for what they charge for one of them and still make a healthy profit.
Does anyone fry anymore?
My husband & up I are from Canada. We have been following America’s Test Kitchen for years & we are always making your recipes. Ours don’t turn out as good as yours. I made your thin crust pizza in the Cusinard this week-end & put it in the fridge for 48 hours; however, I couldn’t get it pressed & stretched out like yours even though I followed all the directions. Mine was in the shape of a Valentine (no kidding) but it was delicious.
For $29 I can get 29 splatter guards at the Dollar Tree. Thanks ATK for finding new ways of wasting people's money!
As others pointed out, a flat bottom wok will easily supplant this contraption, as the collar does seem to have a lot of inherent challenges (properly cleaning in dishwasher without it collapsing, drying properly, storage {as it seems to want to pop open and not stay reduced}, and getting a greasy collar from the stove to the sink without dripping all over).
While I am no fan of fry screens (especially ones with built in carbon) and the mess they inevitably are, I don't think this is the answer either.
Wok up, people!
Finally a modern solution to the main problem that has plagued mankind since the dawn of time; a way to cook bacon while shirtless!
Would this widget even be recyclable? I have just received some information that it might not be, unless you take it to a specialized place. If it will not decompose, ever, and will not be recycled under normal circumstances, I am not sure that it is a good idea.
This is somebody's brother-in-law.
Test one of those splatter screens next.
