    These tutorials amazing! I’ve made a few puppets this year using this whole series for my main point of reference and I keep on coming back for a refresher. It’ll stick in there eventually. Amazing step by step guide though, explained and demonstrated very well and it’s inspiring and motivating to watch you work. I have made some puppets professionally for live performance many years ago but compared to these, they were terrible! I’ve made so much progress and gained a lot of confidence from these tutorials, so a huge thank you to you for that.

    Hey Adam. Thought i'd drop by again and let ya know. After my first puppet broke due to over doing the practice with her couple years back. I discovered Improv and made amazing friends. That I have created amazing fun characters through improv. It has been wanting me to come back to puppetry after a year break from focusing on school. Can't wait to get back into puppet making again during summer soon n I'm going to put myself to the test on making a semi beginner-intermediate level puppet with tech movements in pieces.

    In the video you say you like to machine sew the the mouth fabric to the head fabric and you leave a seam allowance. If I decide to hand sew, should I not leave any seam allowance? Other than being faster and easier, are there any other advantages of machine sewing the mouth? Does machine sewing differ in look than hand sewing because of the seam allowance? Sorry for bombarding you with questions but this stuff fascinates me. I also want to make a nice looking puppet. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Adam! I LOVE your RUclips videos on puppet making! You seem to have thought of everything! I can tell you have been working on your techniques over the years. I have just completed my first puppet. It is for my 12 year old grandson who just broke both bones in his left forearm diving for a fumbled football. His Mom told me he has really been wanting a hand puppet like the muppets. I first looked for something to buy without luck. I stumbled onto your videos while searching. I thought I might give it a try. Of course, it turned out to be MUCH more involved than I first anticipated. The insides could be better, but I am pleased with the little guy I made.

    What do you do if your puppet isn't just one solid color?
    Is there additional steps?

    • @PuppetNerd
      @PuppetNerd  5 лет назад +1

      You could paint it, dye it, or quilt pieces together.

    • @MelodyYoung
      @MelodyYoung 5 лет назад

      Would you still wanna make the pattern if you quilt pieces together?
      I have most of the fabrics I need, I'm just not sure how to make it work exactly.

    That's so inspiring, thanks! We're off to make our first puppet head now...

  • @JosephScarbrough

    This is pretty similar to how I pattern the fleece covering for the head, however I still haven't had much luck with the wrap-around technique which is why I still prefer to sew the fabric directly over the head using something of a combination of the baseball stitch and the Henson stitch. I've heard of using velvet (or an inexpensive velvet substitute) for the mouth - I haven't tried that yet. I traditionally used felt, but I find that with the thickness of the fabric folding over itself (not to mention the throat and tongue) made the mouths a little more difficult to keep completely closed; last year, as an experiment, I tried a cotton material as a substitute. Big mistake. It wrinkled and bunched up (especially considering I cover the entire mouthplate with glue and not just the rim).

    • @JosephScarbrough
      @JosephScarbrough 7 лет назад

      What I used to do is this: attach the felt to the mouthplate first, then like you say, glue the edges of the fleece to the edge of the felt-covered mouthplate, then pattern, cut, and sew the rest of the head from there. I always did that until this past year when I tried doing different things.

      Fleece and felt are different. I use fleece for the skin.

    Very nice video. Thank you again for sharing your ideas. Do you glue the rest of the velvet fabric (you only added glue to the seam allowance) to the mouth plate before closing up the back neck seam to prevent the velvet fabric from bunching up and wrinkling inside the mouth?

    • @PuppetNerd
      @PuppetNerd  7 лет назад +2

      +canufathom1: I only glue the seam allowance. That is more than enough to hold it in. I have tried both way. This looks the best to me.

    Hi! I want to start making puppet creatures and stuff, and I was wondering if I'm going to need a super fancy sewing machine? If I got a pretty cheap one (about $70 U.S.), would that suffice? I also saw a handheld sewing machine, and was curious if that would be good too.

    • @PuppetNerd
      @PuppetNerd  5 лет назад

    Thanks for the free patterns on your page. Been looking at doing a few prpjects that puppets would be awesome for (other prop builds but not puppets).
    You're semi local to Cleveland, something tells me you'd have a blast at the fall gaming/geek/odd convention.
