Love the content brotha. Im the ripe young age of 33 lol and finally deciding to go back to school to become a PTA. I dropped out of college after receiving my Associates degree over 10 years ago because I had no idea what I wanted to do.. I've been working as a personal trainer the past 5 years, which surprisingly had a lot of cross over with PT/rehab type work. Training hundreds of clients dealing with pain and trying to help them made me realize I wanted to go back to school and expand my knowledge in this field. Anyways, youre never too old to make a career change! this video helped a lot

I passed my boards and laws exam on my first try. I am a horrible study person, and basically only studied for 2 full weeks. My 1st week of study was taking practice questions and reviewing them: 50 at a time.
My second week was all my practice tests: 3 score builders tests and 2 PEATs
That being said, I highly reccomend you studying much more than 2 weeks😅

I have just found your channel and I am really enjoying it! Just a note for prospective PTAs out there:
I graduated this year in may and I am working PRN in acute care and at a SNF treating covid patients. I'm not sure if this is different due to my state practice act or my relationship with my PTs, but I have a large impact on what the POC includes once I start working with the patient. For instance, as long as I treat within the CPT codes my PT chooses (ther-ex, ther-act, gait training, etc.), I can choose any interventions I want without, for instance, asking my PT if I can change a certain exercise, add or remove exercises, change assistive devices, etc. I have never worked in OP since I was bored to tears in that setting, so it is possible that maybe things aren't as flexible/POCs aren't as broad compared to inpatient settings. Just a note I wanted to add. I don't want people to get the idea that being a PTA is being handed a sheet of interventions by your PT.
Keep up the great work, I look forward to seeing more content from you!

Of course I have been there! I have been there throughout my entire academic career! From undergrad and even in DPT school. The estimate for home health doesn't quite work out because we can't do all start of care evals- they take FOREVER in HH because you do OASIS assessments, but then they might reimburse about 150-200. But you want that mixed in with regular treatments otherwise you'll be wiped out.

College of the sequoias costs about 7,000 for the PTA program. Great benefit for cost. If i was younger, like 22, and straight out of undergrad, id go to college of the sequoias, pay the 7 grand, make money to pay off debt and get everything straight--maybe even invest and save for DPT school if it was something i still wanted, and do that. By the time id have gone to DPT school, I'd already have so much knowledge to draw from so it wouldnt be as stressful as it is for most DPT students. Now, if i could only get into a program that costs 40 grand, itd be a little tougher of a decision but again, if i was younger, id probably still go PTA route and go from there

I think you should consider what you wanna do for your future. It sort of sucks because becoming a PTA only requires an associates degree. So if you finish your bachelors, you are overqualified for this. And the next step is to go to doctorate school to become a DPT. If you are almost done, or at least more than halfway finished with your undergraduate degree, and you know you want to get into physical therapy for certain, I would recommend that you go all the way and get a doctorate of physical therapy

Unfortunately, all of the PTA programs are at least 1hr 20 min away form me. I'm debating if I should continue at my community college and get my Associates in KIN or just go straight to a trade school like ACC or Concorde? Any recommendations?

    • @drjustinleedpt

I would call and ask the community college and the private programs to see what they would recommend. To my knowledge, a PTA is an associates degree so to get a kinesiology one then a PTA one would be overkill. Also, commuting 1.5 hours is a lot but if you only go 3x a week it might be worth it (worth it considering cost of schooling). You should call and ask what the curriculum asks for

I also think volunteering your time to just give back to the community, but also showing that you are committed to continuing your community service it’s always a great thing. These are both things that you can continue to do while you are in school as well
