  • 7 reasons why you should not be a physical therapist. If you agree with at least 3 out of 7 of these reasons, I would recommend reconsidering the physical therapy profession.

    I decided to study PT when I was a kid, but I am super introverted and shy. When I started working at an outpatient clinic and started acquiring observation hours with a PT I was forced and challenged to improve on my social skills. I have to say it was definitely a roller coaster. I'd say my next biggest challenge is constantly staying fit and healthy. To whoever is down the same path or still exploring their options: You got this. We got this!

      @@kokushibo9100 Honestly, I am a whole different person from when I first started this journey and to where I am right now. I won't sugar-coat anything, so let's get the biggest negatives out of the way first: (1) socially awkward conversations is inevitable, but over the span of a few couple months you learn what to say the next time whenever whatever topic comes back. (2) This is a career that is team-based, and some of my coworkers would feel uncomfortable working with particular patients flirting with them, so I learned to take initiative, set boundaries, and become the middle man to mediate said situations. (3) meeting a first time patient is difficult because you don't know anything about him/her, but I learned a few "ice breaker" questions to get to know them more - so yes, you will need to practice your own personal script when it comes to meeting new patients. (4) the mental fatigue (which is never a personal thing, it is simply an introverted thing) is very real, but I learned to communicate with my supervisors and luckily they were understanding: they would let me have a 2-hour lunch for only one work day of the week. I would say these are the biggest negatives, but these only lasted a year. I am still shy and introverted, but definitely not as much as before. Today, I am taking initiative and being the best leader I can for my team, and my favorite part about this journey is that it turned me from being a pessimistic into an optimistic. Never had I imagined that I would have this change of perspectives, and I love how much I am growing from this. I have friends now. For the longest time I thought I could do everything by myself, but working and studying PT has made me realized that I need people on my side - that I need a team. This took me a year to progress to where I am at right now and it may take longer or shorter for you. The most important thing is to keep moving forward. Because before you know it you will be on top of the mountain. As Travis Scott famously rapped: "You will go up and down, but you will never fall".

    Yes I’ve been a PT for 35 years. I got out of the clinic after 20 years because of hitting a pay ceiling, the unbelievable documentation, and the restrictions put on me by insurances and hospitals/clinic. I was unable to really grow. I got certified in Pilates, wrote 3 books and started my own therapeutic Pilates business to meet the needs of discharged PT patients to avoid reinjury. I can still use my knowledge and help people with pain. I often kick myself for not just becoming a physician.

Starting this fall ill be dual enrolled into college, and im currently picking out the classes I would like to take . However the question came across my mind "Do I really want to be a physical therapist?" I was a Physical Therapist for 7 years before I went back to school. I liked PT but hated the job overall. I believe for the amount of time and money spent in education to become a PT the degree pays limited dividends in the end. I cannot think of a PhD program where you have worse working conditions and get paid less. I’m sure somebody reading this can think of a few doctorate degrees that are worse but I cannot. Hindsight 20/20 I would have never gone into PT. Many professions have better working conditions and pay; PA, NP, Pharmacist, Chiropractor, Dentist, and of course Physician. Many from my PT class went back to school to become PAs.

    Thank you for this video! Do you think PTA (Physical therapist assistant) would be a good career for someone who wants to work in the medical field but doesn't like needles/blood? I know this is a very "hands on" job but I think PT or PTAs are not as exposed to diseases as for example nurses of physicians who are constantly treating sick patients. I might be wrong. What precautions do PT/PTAs take for example if a patient has a skin condition/infection? Do they wear gloves the whole time?

    I am PT but it's been quite a big professional gap in my career as had been busy raising my kids. Now I want to restart again, and I am confused whether to get back into my PT profession. Only with a bachelor's degree in hand and this huge a career gap, I am little skeptical in getting back into this field. Plus, the burnout and how demanding this profession can be, family life will definitely be affected. My BPT is from India, and I am in US now. Could you guide me any other career options that I can look into?

    Aww, thanks for the informative vid! I'm your new subscriber...☑
    You are right, at a certain point in my early childhood, I've needed (and received) physical therapy due to some reasons. I didn't really like it, but eventually realized that PT isn't a joke until I had to be the patient! It's a VERY important field. I appreciated my PT a lot and I wanna be one @^^@
    I'd just like to have your thoughts...In the country I currently live in, we can get into DPT without needing an undergraduate degree, we can get into DPT directly after high school! but DPT here is 5 years long...and it's much, much affordable! (I can pay it out of pocket)...That's why I'm planning to apply now that I graduated high school! (I already have great customer service experience as a cashier)...I think this field is still for me!
    But I'm only kinda worried about the work hours, I don't mind working long hours, but in the future, I wanna be 100% free with no PT work to do before 2pm (3pm is also fine, but I wanna be free by 2pm)..Because my future family life/kids will be my #1 priority, do you think it's possible to start working earlier during the day and then come home early as well? I'm planning to work in the US in the future but on the internet, it says that PT clinics are from 7am-7pm :/
    Like is it possible to start working at 5-6am rather than 7am? Is 8 hours the minimum I am allowed to do? I mean is it flexible hours?
    And when I become old, like when I reach my 50/60s, do you think I'll be able to be a professor for DPT? How do I know the requirements for that? (I prolly won't have the physical capacity to physically work anymore, lol)
    Thanks for the vids! Much appreciated, God bless ☺

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  2 года назад

      I am glad you are interested in the same field! to be honest... I do not know but it will likely depend on the location of your clinic and if they will allow you to have those desired hours. Some clinics are flexible and will have the hours that you want.
      Thank you for subbing!

    Hi Justin, is Documentation done during your working hours or after (after clocking out for the day)? Also, is PT a second career for you meaning you had a different field for your bachelors? I have my Bachelors in Business and I am considering DPT. For most schools, I would need to complete 2 semester courses of Chemistry and Physics at the minimum. I am 26 now, what would be your advice for someone like me? I'm mainly interested in PT since I enjoy fitness and exercising but I'm also compassionate for helping people.

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  3 года назад +6

      Hey Eugene! Thank you for reaching out and commenting your question. As far as documentation goes, the goal is to try to finish documentation during your working hours, but if you cannot finish you will have to finish it after clocking out. This is where a lot of physical therapists get burnt out because they are working way more than the average 40 hours a week.
      I majored in exercise science for my undergraduate degree. This was really useful because a lot of the concepts or similar in PT school. However, your major does not matter when trying to become a physical therapist. As you have figured out, you just need to fulfill all the requirements that are needed for the PT school application. Even if you are 26 now, it is still not too late to become a PT. We had students that were in their 30s in PT school. I made a video discussing what major is best for PT school. I think you’ll find this video insightful ruclips.net/video/crg9SmZ8YMI/видео.html

    I think PT's, Kinesiotherapists (KT's), and Exercise Physiologists (EP's) all do the same the same thing. All three clinical practitioners use exercise therapies, manual techniques, and other therapies to help patients/clients rehab from injury. These professions greatly overlap each other. However, I'd give a slight advantage to Exercise Physiologist because they do a bit more and are diverse in their field.
    As a former former PT patient, I learned about the EP from having to go in cardiac and pulmonary rehab for stress testing, exercise, and further rehab for my back. They reminded me so mich of what PT's do but they know a lot about medicine I take and what exercise does. The place where I did PT had limitations on questions i asked about fitness, and my heart which is why it was suggested to see an EP. I had concerns about how an EP could help me with my back injury after going through PT. That's when I experienced how similar yet different the two are.
    The experience i had with PT was good but the EP's I worked with were good too, but I think they know more due to the fact that they work with patients from different health issues outside of physical injuries.

    that little shit you did at 16:17 was enough for me to come to the conclusion that i will drop out of PT school tomorrow. im 26 and currently enrolled in my 2nd year of a 4 year online program that charges 110k, ive taken out 55k in loans in addition to 15k from undergrad but after going halfway through the curriculum, learning more about the profession, working with physical therapists over the past 8 months and gaining knowledge about investing and finances ive decided its just not worth taking out 55k loans and expending 2 years towards learning the material just to force my way out of it within 5-10 years. The field is super saturated, fighting with insurance is exhausting and the APTA "union" yeah dont get me started.... this is a great profession but too many regulations and the lackluster quality of research and marketability is freightning, some ppl cant even tell the difference between and PT and Personal trainer/athletic trainer/coach. atleast chiropractors learn how to market the profession while they are in school, no DPT school does that which is why its hard to open a private practice

    6:30 hmmm, I see. My experience of PT is different. Mine was, at first, paid for by insurance, for an MVA. I never felt like my PT has to sell anything because she was just legitimately good, and legit enjoys her job. She didnt have to convince me to go back, I always wanted to go back. Never felt like she was stressed about the physicality of her job, or the long hours. So going to her always just felt like the most natural thing, like I was just going to hang out with a friend, and relax. I mean... I always knew she was good, but she just might be so good that she makes it look easy, and my experience was actually unusually positive. That is probably why they are the top physio spot in town, and they're always busy. There was no indication she ever struggled to get clients.

    My mentor and the best physical therapist I've ever met is technically out of shape and overweight, but that's because most of PT, I would gander, is actually "pain science," disguised as as pathoanatomy. What're your thoughts on that assertion? Sincerely curious.

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  2 года назад +2

      Great question! As PTs we definitely work in the realm of pain science, since we typically help people get out of pain. However we aren’t strictly in that field. I would say we are more in the science of movement science and have associations in pain science and pathoanatomy. As far as the weight is concerned.. I’m not here to judge overweight PTs, but if we are preaching exercise, movement, and doing everything possible to decrease the amount of stress on our tissues, then weight management is a huge part of that. Imagine a 100lbs vs. 300lbs person and the amount of stress to the knees.. I just think of it like this. If you went to a dermatologist that has horrible skin (not due to factors that cannot control) then would you trust that derm? Not to say that they are not good, but that’s just the perception factor

    I hope this isn't taking the wrong way but the stuff that was said about not seeing a dermatologist with bad skin or a dietitian that was overweight, that's the way that I thought when I was probably in my twenties but now that I've turned 40 I think of a differently like because I'm overweight I've considered being a dietitian to help other people and I can see a person with bad skin becoming a dermatologist because they dove into that area of expertise because of their condition.
    So people tend to gravitate towards areas of interest based on personal experience.
    Just like why so many psychiatrist's chose that field because of their own personal or family problems.
    🤷🏻‍♀️ Just IMO

    Hello, I want to say thank you for making these videos. I'm having a hard time deciding if I should switch universities to pursue a better program for physical therapy. I saw that you recommended CBU online for the undergrad program on your other video. I'm thinking about switching to the school. I looked at the list of the requirements for classes and they didn't require physics to graduate. Is it needed to become a physical therapist? Also, what are the job options if I decide not to continue with school after a bachelor's degree?

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  2 года назад

      You’re absolutely welcome Vic. So there are a couple things I want to address. In order to get into PT school, every program will have different prerequisites, but for the most part, taking these courses are going to be required - Bio I/II, Chem I/II, physics I/II, anatomy and physiology). I would say about 95% of all programs will will require these. So… yes it is needed. Also keep in mind that most programs will also require an IN- PERSON LAB vs online labs. Just something to think about. Lastly, what major are you? That will help determine what jobs are out there

I've had patients tell me they didnt like coming in because they were out of shape and all of the PTs and PTAs were basically gym bros. They would have probably been more comfortable with a fluffy DPT.

    Instead of convincing people why they shouldn't become a physical therapist, maybe we should try to fix the areas that are wrong with the occupation itself. Remember, if less people want to become a physical therapist, we will have a shortage of them. Thus, putting more caseloads on you, who is already a physical therapist. Convincing people not to do a job that is actually meaningful and necessary is totally counterintuitive. Just thinking outside the box. Am I wrong? If so, please let me know.

      You are right. These problems have only become worse with time. I have been a PT for over 20 years. Taking insurance versus cash for our services has increased our documentation (we have to document skill and medical necessity to get insurance to reimburse and they make it hard to prove); working for large corporations and other people (mostly because of increased regulations after the Affordable Care Act - don’t vote leaders that support Universal Healthcare etc. )versus working for ourselves has reduced our pay; check out the Medicare Physician Fee schedule to see an example of how much your employer is taking from you!! Supervising PTAs without additional reimbursement is also a mistake as your license is being used and you are at increased liability while someone else is profiting. Let’s fix it!
