  • Haiti is on the brink of collapse amid escalating gang violence. The U.N. reports a death toll of 1,500 so far this year. Meanwhile, Haiti's transitional presidential council is being finalized with the aim of appointing a new Prime Minister to "put Haiti back on the path of democratic legitimacy, stability and dignity." Widlore Mérancourt is a reporter at the Washington Post and editor-in-chief of the Haitian publication AyiboPost. He joins Hari Sreenivasan from Port-au-Prince to discuss the deteriorating situation.

      Exactly, please read my comments. The seven or eight families that really rule Haiti arm in arm with the US, France, and Canada and their South American cartels. The UN did so many crimes in Haiti that can never be told because of nonsense like this. I told all my students in Haiti, LEARN ENGLISH and study journalism and we will change Haiti. Look everywhere on earth, at every nation where regime change occurs on the regular, and you will see they avoid ENGLISH. Creole is a barrier to communicaiton so third parties and agents like this get to tell Haitian stories. Haitians are really bad at speaking up for Haiti. Now that is true.Most think it will not change anything.

    The UN and foreign powers have been avoiding intervention in Haiti, even if the deteriorating situation has been increasing at an alarming rate for years now. Today, they still don’t want to intervene. The UN’s current solution is to mandate other countries to take in refugees, especially the Dominican Republic, while they have “meetings” in luxury hotels and unlimited credit cards, with hookers included in the offerings. The UN is useless and a waste of tax payers money. Today, Haiti needs an army to begin restoring some kind of security and be the foundation to rebuild. Nothing can be accomplished until Haitians unite in patriotism and civil behavior…

      @enkaiscott Месяц назад

      Please read my comments above. You are getting the Hasbara sewn into the subtext of the story. Haiti is far from hopeless. Haiti never was and never will be a lost cause. The US has had it in for Haiti since they burst their shackles and freed the slaves. They have had no government for three years now and only 1500 people died in a population of 12,000,000. Ask yourself how? Haitians think they live in a violent country. My folks are from Jamaica. Jamaica is a violent country on par with the USA. Haiti is not a violent country. Violence is magnified and exaggerated. If it is unsafe for foreigners now it is because their is no government. Did you see any effort in this story to address that issue? Why?

One resorts to asking multiple questions in one sentence, the other one expresses his love, admiration and respect for doctors. Amanpour & Co. Possible conclusion from this pointless conversation: call Doctors Without Borders, bring back Amanpour herself. Or maybe this was the goal of the video all along. The answer lies in the history of the two nations. One nation that started with chattel slavery where enslaved Africans died after 5 years of being enslaved (sugar was petrol at that time). The other nation had a milder type of slavery, where the Spaniards, indigenous and blacks lived together as ranchers. Haiti fought the French, Spaniards and English and lost 350,000 men and killed over 50,000 whites. Then, the slave societies in the world marginalized Haiti. France imposed a debt (refinanced it many times and sold it to the Americans) that crippled the advancement of the new nation. In fact, France restored slavery without shooting a shot. They obtained reparations for their lost properties (enslaved Africans). With that money, France built the Eifel Tower and developed its society. The Americans bought the debt and invaded the country in 1915. They took over the ministry of finance, the ministry of public works, and health. This latter was because they wanted to use blacks as guinea pigs for their medical experiments. That is seldom talked about, but we know that they were doing the same in the US during that period. There was a concentration camp and mass graves where the US has now built a large factory in Fort Liberty. They massacred many of the CACO members from 1915 to 1934. Then the US was responsible for ever coup d'etat from 1934 to the present. Haiti is rich in minerals and Dominican intellectuals know that. If you want to know more, please research the history of both nations and how western powers dealt with them. The west has treated Haiti the way they've treated Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. They want the chaos so they can exploit their resources. Yes, the Haitians are responsible for resisting imperialism by all means, while DR has capitulated and played along.

    The man being interviewed basically says that there should be international intervention in Haiti, but Haitians should control what they do. Which Haitians would decide what they do? How will this not just turn into ineffective aid? How is what is currently going on in Haiti not already an example of what happens when Haitians are the ones calling the shots there?
    There definitely needs to be an international intervention, ideally of multiple nations. However, if others won’t join then the USA should intervene along with as many local partners are willing to join. as People are being raped and killed everyday in Haiti. Haitian families are being violated and destroyed, businesses that took a lifetime to build are being destroyed; something has to be done. The world can’t just just sit back and watch and say, “can’t intervene because of prior criticism of intervention”. People will die and get raped if the world doesn’t intervene, it’s anarchy there.
    The lesson from WW2 of “The only thing necessary for evil to win is for good people to do nothing” doesn’t just apply to Europe. President Biden should announce an imminent intervention and try to get as many countries to join the force before a certain date, but go through with it regardless of what others say.

    There has to be a US-led (coalition) intervention ASAP in order to set the stage for Haitians to have self-determination. There is no way this situation will just get better on its own. I know the US interventions of the past haven’t always been helpful, but let’s learn from the past and make this intervention the best one we’ve ever done - limited, but with the goal of setting the stage for a democratically elected leader that emerges from Haiti. President Biden, please do this now!

      Even with sure dire in Haiti, they continue to get impregnated. Knowing most hospitals are shuttered, many travel to the Dominican Republic for birthing. Over a third of maternity services in the DR are for Haitians, at a great cost to tax payers. Many attempt to stay in the country, then overwhelming the school system, medical services, and every other aspect living in the country. Child vaccinations are free to, as well as other care, in public health facilities. I see it first hand living in the DR. Diapers and milk is very costly, many can’t even feed them. Even in the DR I see many Haitian children just eating rice and basic root foodstuffs. Being a parent, I understand the need for children…even with my decent income, I only have one child. Kids are expensive today… most haitianas tow 3 or more…
