The Renault 5 Turbo 2 Is a Pure Firecracker

- “In 1980, I had the chance to drive a brand-new R5 Turbo,” Christophe Guerin says, “and it was such a thrill that I got hooked.”
That encounter, when he was 20, eventually led Guerin back to the Renault 5 Turbo 2 later in life. He certainly grew up in the right part of the world in order to become a car enthusiast: France.
“I was born in Le Mans, 15 minutes away from the legendary circuit of the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” Guerin says. “My father worked at the Renault factory in Le Mans, and he was a handyman, so he gave me his passion for mechanics and repairs.”
What began as studies in a technical college led to wrenching for local rally teams, learning from the masters, and seeing what made cars fast. But a love for the tiny Renault never faded. Finally, after years, he asked a friend to find a good one to buy. “I need one,” he said, “Find a pristine one for me, and make sure it’s red.”
As it happens, the car he calls his “treat” was about to enter his life for good.
“When I saw it coming, it was…I almost dropped to my knees,” he says. “That sound-you can’t forget it."

What makes this channel so great is that the cars are not owned by ridicoulusly rich people, so its way easier to relate to these stories.
Some cars are ^^
And the ones that do call themselves care takers not owners... Understanding that they can't take them to the grave
believe me a real enthusiast is a real one whether rich or poor! I like rich ones , they tend not to complain and judge a lot.
+Jedinger95 What? This guy maybe, but a vast majority of the owners on here are very, very wealthy.
Not really relatable when some guy in his well to do country side villa shows us his old vintage car sitting next to a Ferrari and Porsche and harps about how the old car may not be as fast as his modern toys but he derives so much more pleasure from the old klunker while munching on canned chicken soup in your mom's basement apartment.
A car for the history books. We've digitized cars far too much now, probably for the better in terms of health and safety. However, don't expect any cars that can capture the essence of this era of hot hatch anymore.
Well said 👍
Agreed, technology is ruining the driving experience.
Agreed, cars these days are better in every single *measurable* way, but somewhere along the path to refinement and safety something very important has gotten lost over the years: the soul. That raw unplugged liveliness of old GTis and sports cars are long gone and will never return, and that is a very sad thing for petrolheads indeed.
Very true. My fun car is a 1926 Model T. That car.....has a soul to it. It bucks, it jerks, it let's me know what is does and doesnt like. Driving it is an experience.
I love it when owners talk about their cars with so much passion, pride and joy. I am definitely not alone in this world. Thank you!
The 5 turbo is iconic for every european car enthusiast. Awesome piece of machinery pure driving experience orientated.turned on the volume on the road passes to hear the sound of the exhaust and engine ..
That startup gave me goosebumps.
What an honest, throaty roar

I merely adore it
"Sometimes it gives me a fright, but i enjoy myself" BEST COMMENT EVER TO A CAR
Hey, Mr Petrolicious, do you plan to make a short "behind the scenes" for your videos ? Even just 2-3 min. It would be really interesting. Your videos are always beautiful in cinematography. Thanks :)
This show is like an international version of what the old /DRIVE network was like.
+Mooselover1011 That, only much better.
Firefly To each his own my friend. I like this, but I loved the old Drive network. Both are AWESOME automotive channels on RUclips.
+Mooselover1011 You're right. Perhaps I'm still salty about Drive changing their profile. I understand why they made the jump to pay-per-view, it's just that they got us used to receiving quality content for free. Maybe I just got spoiled. I really miss Mike Musto's show.
+Firefly Wow, a realistic appraisal of one's own opinion. I'm going to have to ask you to get the hell off the internet, sir. We can't be having your honesty and civility here.
Sorry, not sorry. ;-)
When I was a kid I never liked the look of the Renault 5 but when I grew up I realized that they were amazing looking and also had some great sports models.
I LOVE the Jean Ragnotti signature on the door!
My favourite Renault model. I've always loved the performance versions of cars the most and the street legal versions of cars that has been into WRC or racing - such as this one and the 205 GTI, quattro, Stratos, Celica GT4, 306 Maxi, EVO IV, Escort Cosworth, M3 E30, 190E, Sierra RS Cosworth, 850 T-5R, Primera GT and so on.
Gordini?
+supremefantastic A fellow Evo IV lover!

6 mins of fence posts, cow pastures and 2 inch close ups of the hood and 30 seconds of cool car footage
Modern cinematography in a nutshell. All flash,no substance.
The beauty of an old Renault. A beauty that not many understand.
Liked before even watching
And EVERY time ,I think you can't get better, the music, the enthusiasm, the car,the story, you RALLY to another WIN!!!
man, what a passion for a car, what a video, what an ediiting and what a music!. Pertolicios, watching your videos is an unlimited joy I don't want it to end, Thanks a million for this.
5:07 Jean Ragnotti's signature?!
A lot of Renault are signs by Jean Ragnotti :)
+krampus_ looks like it!
+krampus_ And caricature on the wall
+notso100 spotted that too. Ragnotti was such a great driver!
krampus_. Ragnotti = great driver with a nice heart
Today's the 25th anniversary of another Renault hatch, the Clio. As a 182 owner I certainly appreciate this video being released today. :)
What a happy little car the R5 T was, and is. Always puts a smile on my face when i see one. ;)
Oh what a car, from such a special decade.Such machismo and passion rolled into one 5Turbo'2'.Love it.Great channel, keep these videos coming please because it good to hear from custodians who drive their cars even in the rain! Thanks Petrolicious.
There's something about this one.. You guys have outdone yourselves. Fantastic.
Another one of my favorites growing up. Love the finishing touch with the signature on the door panel.
This was the first road car that I ever saw that had flames come out the back of it. October 1987 just out of Grenoble a 5 Turbo 2 that had been lowered and had the large GroupB rear spoiler passed us at dusk.
I love this channel, thanks for the amazing content.
Not the first time I've been moved to tears by a Petrolicious video. Beautiful.
+7thrx I didn't make it to that extent, but as I was watching I was thinking 'Wow, there's something different about this video. The shots are beautiful!'.
+ItchyKneeSon I lost it when he was talking about seeing his car for the first time. I imagined him as me when I eventually get my RX-7.
+7thrx Are you sure you didn't just stub your toe? ;) I was also thinking that the emotional attachment this guy has for his car is based on his previous experiences and how it's interesting that everyone can become emotionally attached to physical objects just because of the experiences we've had with them. For me, it was Volkswagens. But, now that I've moved to Japan and spent over 5 years and 100k kms with my Honda Today, I've become so attached that I'm considering importing it to the States when I move back. This is clearly an emotional thought.
+ItchyKneeSon Do it. Bring a Spirit R Type A back too please.
I am the same as you Christophe my friend. I fell in love before it was even produced. It was just a rumor. Then one showed up in the paddock at an IMSA GT race at Laguna Seca. I was Tech Inspector, but the only car I wanted to strip search was the R5T2. Thanks for the memories.
The content you bring to the table about the cars & passion is just high end (for the lack of a better word).. thanks
I remember seeing one of these when I was down in Quiberon a few years ago, it was full Maxi spec, you could hear it miles off. Fantastic!
Just by listening to most of these guys, I fall in love with their cars.
Working on mine... Hopefully soon will it be ready.
Bless!
beautiful video, great editing, great music. this id whats its all about, you can see the passion in his eyes. i can watch clips like this all day.
Very nice video, great little car! A bit of a beast. True legend.
My father's old friend Jerry Fink, showed up one day at our regional BMC autocross in New Jersey with an R5 Turbo 2 with all the glass removed, on a trailer. I was working the course when he ran, so I got to experience it raging by me in full terror mode. It raised a front wheel during the whole skidpad section of the course, and when it hit the "garage" section at the end of the course (a tight jog/chicane meant to slow you down before your stopped), he set the car up at the right angle, punched the throttle and that car friggin leaped into the air in a miraculous pivot. To this day it is the most inspiring hatch I've ever encountered. BTW, for the millennials unfamiliar with this car, the R5 (LeCar in USA) was 1.4L 4 cyl, longitudinal front engine front drive and was Renault's ubiquitous economy car at the time. The R5 Turbo and Turbo 2 were longitudinal mid engined, built by Renault Sport (Alpine) with the same 1.4L 4 cyl with a turbo and between 175 and 195hp. Approx. 21 Turbo 2s were grey marketed into the USA by Sun International. and we still have extremely few examples here. Then came the R5 GT Turbo (never sold in USA) which was once again a front drive, front engined 1.4L with the turbo, and less power, and much less extreme, and produced in much greater numbers.
I have a little Renault 5 Campus SuperCinq, its about a cm off the ground, loud as fuck from all the holes in the exhaust(which also happens to fumigate the car if im stationary with the heaters on), bouncy, hard to steer. Everything about it i love, i have three other cars, and none quite brings a smile all the time from driving it, just like the r5 does. This video is perfection!
Really cool. Nice to see this kind of passion from all over the world.
Great vid. You can feel a true passion for cars in this guy.
I can relate to that story... My cousin had one those back when i was 6. Always taking care of and take me to school, just wished he held on to it
I can't describe how much I love this channel
I had a Renault 5 GT Turbo but I always wanted a Turbo 2..
love the passion for his car
What a beautiful design.
@Antonio Farina Oooohh I think it's really beautiful 😍😍
I own a little '87 Renault 5 GT Turbo. It's such a fun car to drive and the sound (with the rear silencer removed) is absolutely amazing!
thank you for sharing your car n your story
Very emotional video. One of the bests I’ve ever seen. Congrats.
Awesome car, awesome filming and video production! Well done!
Genuine man, genuine car, not I-sheet 👍 la vraie voiture française de sport pur et dur 😍
Felicidades Christophe
this is one of the first cars I go for on Gran turismo every time.I love these! beautiful car!
beautifully shot video
Great story. Awesome that he got to work on the classic rally cars. Now this is a classis petrolicious film!
A friend of my dad has one of those :) Looks really special when you see it in traffic with other cars.
As ever intense video ! Thx Petrolicious !
This engine has what to me is the perfect turbo I4 sound. Love it. Great video as well.
One of my favorite of the 2wd rally age. I managed to see one in Germany in a museum. I literally screamed when I spotted it!
Reminds me of the "Le Car" Seinfeld Episode............
---George:""Next thing I know, I'm getting dropped off in a Le Car with a fabric sunroof......All the kids are shouting at me,
"Hey, Le George!"" " Bonjour, Le George" "Let's stuff Le George in Le Locker...!""
Yet another car we didn't get here in the states, only the base model with 3 lug nuts, lol, called the LeCar. The Turbo5 is just a badass, plain and simple, the guy even said as much in the video, what a thrill it must be to drive...all senses satisified!!
One of my dream cars since childhood. I had a Matchbox one back in the day.
My favourite channel on youtube, happy to see you guys going international, the UK is full of Gem stories!
+Mehow DF They do plenty of videos over here, I've seen a couple made in Italy, there was also a man with his Aston Martin (which he bought instead of a house) from Germany/Switzerland (can't remember). I'm pretty sure they did videos in the UK, too.
Anyways, wonderful channel, producing quality content wherever they go!
The cinematography in these films is as fantastic as the cars.
OMG, the sound of that engine is so fantastic.
Anytime someone says something about a Renault 5, I always think of the Turbo 2. One crazy, and good looking French hatch.
what an great car, my father owned one, when he was 25. Pearly white ;)
thank you for the quality of this video !
excellent! drove 1 of these back in 1986,my mind was blown. I will own 1 some day
Keep up these videos Petrolicious! Great work.
The engine has what to me is the perfect turbo I4 sound. Love it. Great video as well.
Absolutely outstanding
Yes. My youth dream car gets some love!
beautiful video guys!
just wow! what a rare beauty, sounds amazing
Beautiful video, and such a fantastic car! What a sound too - it really snarls! Awesome!
my absolute favorite automotive youtube channel other than car throttle, and at some times this is way better.
In 80s my father was an advertising designer for Renault so I grew up watching those cars. I remember when r5 turbo was exposed first time, it was a shock, a little steroidized monster that let flow the immagination of a boy. This film is a sort of de je vu, a backwards time travel. Thank you Petrolicious.
This was a pleasure to watch
Beautifully filmed and edited. Great video on this very rare car.
Just after seeing CT's Mx-5 history recap, this vid appears on top of my subscriptions list. Today must be a great day :D
What a sound!!!
What a great life he leads. A Renault 5 Turbo 2, AND A SPRINGER SPANIEL. The best car, and the BEST DOG. I used to have a red one as well.
Beautiful cars, I owned a R5 Gordini Turbo back in the 80s when I was 18. Awesome car. Always lusted after a Turbo 2 (still do), nearly bought one in the 90s and still kick myself to this day for not buying it, it was only £8,000. Watched them steadily increase in price. But I will have one one day soon.

Always Brillant, Elegant, and Passionate. Thank you +Petrolicious!
Magical! So good!
Wow, It doesn't look outdated even today. 😃
One of my all time favourite cars
Amazing!
My favorite youtube channel. I miss something in this particular video: the R5 deserves some scenes showing the engine bay.
the love for the cars , its a true passion , i am exactly like he, great you can have your own !!!!!!!!!!
Outstanding machine!
im in love with this car
I owned a 1990 Renault 5 GT turbo in 1994 and it was amazing. Always thought I would get the Turbo 2 later in life! I can remember them selling for around £12,000 for a10 year old one in the mid 90s. Now your looking at around £40,000 and up... So it's just a dream for me, but still an amazing car.
Your dad is so right in saying that. I still have a couple of photos of her 1990 White Phase 2 H404 NTG. A little tin box with 120hp. You could overtake anything at anytime. Cars of today have lost the appeal of the original hot hatches...
That is an al time legendary car! Looks sooo cool! I WANT ONE!
Nice photo as usual. Sympa la bombinette!
Thank you so much for getting rid of that awful, loud start sequence to every video. I used to mute them until the car in question showed in the video.
Awesome !!!
What a wonderful video. I smiled all the way through, my favourite car of any era. I was a lad in the 80s and swore I would have one. They are out if my ££ range and hard to come by. Settled on a RS Twingo for the now.
We all share his [[passion. Mine was the Rotary, but others are different.
Very nice!!
This film is fantastic ! Good job guys !
What a beautiful video
