This song, written by David Gates in 1971, reached No. 5 on the American Billboard Hot 100 in 1972. “Although initial listeners may have interpreted it as a song about a broken relationship, Gates revealed that it was written in memory of his father who died in 1963 before he achieved his success with Bread.”
So sorry to hear about your dad! My dad passed 42 and a half years ago, however before that I hadn’t seen him for quite awhile! We had to leave him when I was 12 as he was an alcoholic and things weren’t getting better! My dad was a good person, however he was in the end of ww2 and also the Korean War! I don’t think he was given the help that he needed! I’m old now and I STILL miss him! God Bless you! Stay safe!
Dan Fogelberg wrote & performed a beautiful acoustic song called Leader of the Band as a tribute to his father. If you like Bread, you will probably enjoy Dan Fogelberg's music.
Growing up I would listened to this and know it was a tribute to someone who passes, especially parents or grandparents. It didn't hit me. Now my mom who has Alzheimer's sits by me and it this song hits hard. 😪
I've been married 45yrs, yes I was a teenager in the 70s and yes, our generation was raised with fantastic, meaningful music!! I'm so happy to see you enjoying and exploring my generation!!💖💖💖💖
There's no real deep feelings in music much anymore, and even the rock and rollers have had a perfect chance to write some protest songs. (lol) David Gates went to my high school in Tulsa a few years ahead of me so we got to watch him make his way up. His vocals have always been flawless. Excellent reaction, Chod.
I played this song on guitar and sang it at my Mothers funeral. When the mic quit working, one by one, the entire congregation (who incredibly knew all the words) joined in singing to finish the song. I will treasure that moment forever.
@@RenegadeRockChik I feel your pain this past 29th of June it has been 5 years since my father passed away. It’s not easy to lose a parent it almost feels as if we’re losing our foundation. I pray you take comfort in the good memories.
@@jennifermullen9891 I'm truly sorry for your loss. I agree. It IS like our foundation is if not lost, at least shaky. Thanks. I pray the same is true for you.
It's really something how time slowly changes generations. Bread was one of my favorite bands back when I was young, 'If' was and is my favorite love song. That said it wasn't all roses and waffles. We also had David Peel screaming 'Up Against the Wall'.
I saw Bread in concert back in 1977 at The Blaisdell Arena in Hawaii while serving in the U.S. Army. He wrote this song about his dad who died at a young age.
Such a beautiful song. I don’t believe you’ve reacted to their song “Guitar Man”. It’s so different from their other tracks. I hope you’ll check it out!
💞💞💞💞 Back in the 70s as a young girl I only the meaning of this song was for the living. Now that I'm old and a widow it has a whole different meaning. Now I understand that sometimes you never get the chance to say what you feel ever again. I'd give everything to have him back again.
I had forgotten how much I love Bread. Such a great sound. These songs were written in a time of sadness for a lot of people, being the tail end of the Vietnam war and the sad 60's with the loss of JFK, MLK and RK. I think the mood was generally sad. Music reflects society at the time eg the 80's...upbeat, lots of money around, big hair, big clothes big everything...
Sad music is somehow needed. Everything is not happy. Bread's music was mostly about love. If you went to a wedding in the 70's or 80's Bread's songs were always part of it.
'Sweet Surrender' and 'It Don't Matter To Me', brilliant tracks. A reaction to Gilbert O'Sullivan's 'Alone Again Naturally' or 'Nothing Rhymed' would be appreciated Chod. Such a talented musician who first came on the scene in the '70s and is still touring. Both of these tracks are timeless classics beautifully written with meaning and telling a story. He dressed as a street urchin with braces and a flat cap which made him stand out from the glam rockers at that time which made him unique!
If u haven't already reacted to Mike and the Mechanics' "In the Living Years", it's another song along the same line: losing a loved one-- specifically, his father.
I was that guy who would jam too Led Zeppelin, The Who, Boston, Black Sabbath or Lynryd Skynyrd then have no problem putting on a Bread album on that same turntable and jam too them.
It's really brutal my wife was only 48 when cancer took her away and both my parents are now 80 and probably won't be here too much longer so this song hits hard just like Pink Floyd's Time now that i'm 59. It's sad and beautiful at the same time and it is oddly soothing regardless.

My husband and I just celebrated 37 years of marriage. It’s not been perfect. We’ve struggled through issues. We have 3 grown children and 2 grandchildren. The glue that has kept us together is mutual respect, forgiveness and kindness. Also a relationship with God. Now these things are considered extremist ideals in our “woke” world. But it’s what works. This song reminds me of what’s truly important in life! Your family and loved ones.
I was going through my record collection today and put aside my Bread albums for playing tomorrow. Then tonight I see this. We are on the same wavelength!
The music industry totally influences todays music...they track the most popular and then have their stable of singers record similar music...to the point it all sounds alike...in the 60's and 70's so much innovative music came out, so frequently, that it was always fresh and nobody tracked it on computers.
Check out the 5th Dimension/Marilyn McCoo 1970 performance on Soul Train of 'One Less Bell to Answer' - another great example of what you're speaking to...
Thank you for another excellent reaction, Chod! For another emotional song that is right up your alley, please react to "And When I Die" by Blood Sweat and Tears. To add to your Bread playlist to get to some day, please look for If, It Don't Matter To Me, The Guitar Man, Diary, Aubrey and Baby I'm A Want You". In the meantime, please keep doing what you are doing. Your channel should be required listening by every music student in every school in the world!! Best to you, Chod!

You REALLLY need to do their song "IF"
One of the most gorgeous love songs ever written....
You beat me to it. This is almost exactly what I was going to say.
I second that emotion!
Probably the greatest tribute song a son ever wrote for his father.
I just lost my Dad last year and this song really hurts. He was my strength and now I am lost.

I spent MANY MANY hours of my youth with my headphones on listening to Bread. Great soft rock group....
This song was written to David's dad.
David Gates has the sweetest voice in pop history.
Great reaction to a great song. An often overlooked tearjerker from the '70's is "Just When I Needed You Most" by Randy Vanwarmer.
my favorite is "it don't matter to me". the only thing I don't like about bread songs is they can be too short!
And they make you cry!
I still remember all the words 😁. I owned this album and every song on it is perfection. ❤️
Amazing. All these years I have taken this as a "love lost" song.
