Thanks to Neil and Larry... I didn't read your comments until after I had posted and both your comments gave validity to my observation. As a comedy actor Chevy Chase was great but in this format as a talk-show host he is completely out of his league. It was like he had no idea how to give a sincere compliment to such a good actor and all-round good person that Jim Varney was. Although there was no need for it, it was almost like he was jealous of Jim Varney's success. Just my opinion.
Anybody remember Pat Sajak's attempt at late night hosting? It was just as awkwardly bad as this. Neither show lasted any amount of time. Seth Meyers is just as terrible to watch. They've got the formatting of his show set up so that it dilutes his awfulness so that it keeps limping on and on. I keep hoping they'll finally get around to putting a bullet in it in order to make way for a better show. Stagnantly formulaic political satire has been the late night soup du jour for the last 3 years or so, and they seem happy to kill late night tv in such a sad way. Carson, Berle, and the others are all probably rolling around in their graves over what's become of the late night format they nurtured and made so successful.
Jim Varney performing Shakespeare is spectacular. Look up his 60 Minutes interview for a real treat. His outstanding Hamlet soliloquy, and for comedic effect transitions into Ernest P. Worrel, clearly demonstrates his acting range.

He only had one character
Jim Varney should have had his own show. He was great.
Thank you for all the laughs and smiles. One of the only guys I'll watch over and over again. I love you Ernest. Never Forgotten. Rip
I never knew Mr Varney played the dulcimer. That piece was really moving.
I will respect the gentle and generous soul that was Jim Varney and not say anything negative about Chevy but well... I think we all know how he treated Mr. Varney was not very nice.
Jim Varney... How I miss you sir.
R.I.P.
I'm kind of taken aback by how much of an ass Chevy Chase was being to Jim. Jim didn't deserve it but I admired the fact that Jim stayed humble the whole time and just shrugged off any insults that came his way.
Chase is a douche. Always has been.
He would have made a great Rat Pack, character.
Shows how Jim is the better man not some slithering snake like the Chev is.
He's like seething at points and betrays his psychology with the theater count and concerns of being "upstaged."
@@illnickdotcom seemed more like he was responding glibly to the question. And the upstaging comment seemed like inside joke with the actress, hence the wink at the camera.
I got the impression that Chevy was talking down to Jim the entire time, including the question about the seats, which comes off like a real insider prick brag only someone in-the-business would make. The whole interview seemed like an attempt to make Jim seem out of place or like he didn’t belong. The crack about “kids love ya”… repeatedly calling him a hillbilly with that stank on it. Jim was able to judo roll all of it. Water off a duck’s ass. Maybe you’ve never had an entitled slob with connections and status talk down about your humble roots, but we know it when we hear it.
He played, "Wildwood Flower", by the Carter Family
I saw Maybelle Cater play and sing "Wildwood Flower" live - March 1968 in Memphis.
You can tell Chevy seems uncomfortable being himself. He does much better when told what to do and say. Loved him during the best days of SNL.
Man, I loved this guy. I remember growing up in Rocky Mount and seeing him in the Pine State Ice Cream or milk commercials always gettings his hands shut up in the window when he tries to talk to Vern. I miss him and those commercials. I did not know he did a beverly Hillbillies movie. I will have to look for it online.
I miss him soooo much! He was a big part of my childhood. I loved watching him on 📺. Loved all his movies. I bet he would have been a awesome neighbor to have!!!
Glad to see all the great things about Jim. I caught one of his movies on accident and been a fan since.👍🏿
There sits one of the most witty, intelligent, genuinely likeable and talented celebrities of all time. Incidentally Chevy Chase is in this clip as well for some reason.
Just loved Jim great actor very versatile. Loved Ernest, Jed Slinky Dog. Also a Shakespearean Actor.
I miss Jim
Love love love Jim Varney. He made my childhood wonderful watching the Ernest movies. It always made me proud that he was from Ky like me.
Ernest goes to Heaven
Very well said. Jim was a huge talent and a sweet man.
Jim Varney was truly a gem. A huge part of my childhood growing up was all of the Ernest films. definitely passed away too early. A man of many talents
Jim was a genuine person, may God bless him, so much class, not a phoney, the world needs him today.
A great comedian and a great person!
The song that he played, The Wildwood Flower, is probably the first song We all learned on the guitar in the south.
"I am a Hill William". Priceless.
Jim Varney was a class act, indeed he was.
Wow, my respect for Chevy just dropped quite a bit! Jim, you were definitely the better man here. Rest in peace, kind man 💙
I met Jim once when he was in a parade on Georgia Street in Vancouver bc and he was a great guy! And he gave us all Ernest masks.
I remember the car lot commercials he did earlier in his career. This guy was organic funny. RIP Jim
My wife and I looooove this man! God bless his eternal, loving spirit!👍😃💯💛🙏
Jim was everything a good person should be.
Jim Varney was just so country cool.
Wow...Chevy Chase is a pretty terrible host.
Yeah. Good lord Chevy was awful. Lol.
But Jim's presence saved it... :)
Carson, Berle, and the others are all probably rolling around in their graves over what's become of the late night format they nurtured and made so successful.
chevy acts like he is way above jim.trying to insult his work by not knowing the proper name.ex.that vern guy and the Clampetts
Jim Varney performing Shakespeare is spectacular. Look up his 60 Minutes interview for a real treat.
His outstanding Hamlet soliloquy, and for comedic effect transitions into Ernest P. Worrel, clearly demonstrates his acting range.
Lol! Jim is a top notch, class act. Smooth as hell. Yeah, Chase is a bad host.
How long did Chevy Chase's Show last? I vaguely remember hearing about it, and then, seems like it was gone.
@@ronaldshank7589 Apparently with good reason
So Jim sat there and was made fun but stayed a true professional. R.I.P Jim
and he still came out ahead of the "host" and made the host look like an a-hole for his condescending comments.
I'd like to listen to an album of Jim playing the dulcimer.
I've talked to actors who worked with Jim Varney, and they all sing his praises and a wonderful, sweet man and incredibly under-rated actor. Never heard a bad word agin' him. Chevy Chase, on the other hand...
"All I ever see you do is the Vern guy."
He should have responded with "All I ever see you do is that Vacation Shit"
My son & I are binge watching Ernest movies & it led me to this CC is such a pecker, no wonder his show didn’t last. Jim Varney was such a great personality. I didn’t appreciate him back then but certainly do now.
Jim was an accomplished Shakespearean actor before the Ernest movies. Chevy Chase embarrassed himself by not knowing more about him before the interview.
RIP Jim Varney. You are sorely missed!
