Jim Varney Stand-Up Routine, 1979

- This is a comedy special clip from 1979 or so, with an apparently rare Jim Varney stand-up performance introduced by Minnie Pearl. He talks about Elrod Napier and his mama, and Virgil at the filling station getting dosed. It just sort of ends in a weirdly edited way. The tape I found this on has randomly recorded segments so information is scarce. It may have been hosted by Mel Tillis, I think I see Jim Stafford in the audience, and Varney was followed by Lonnie Shorr. Is Zorro on? No rights held or implied. (If you'd like this video removed for copyright reasons, please contact me rather than notifying RUclips, I will gladly take it down from this channel.) Be sure to check out oldtvads.blogspot.com for other video oddities...
Jim was my 2nd cousin. Went to his house in White House Tennessee many times. What a great and funny guy! Miss him so much. RIP Jim! Thanks for the memories!
We sure miss him.
@matt who pissed in your cornflakes this mornin'? What time is it?
@matt by the way Ted is my cousin.
@@TheresaPowers (Observationally:) I do believe you are the first person I've ever heard say something like that. (Genuine inquiry:) Did you know him personally? Or meet him more than once?
Skippy Damn Skippy
I think kids today would have loved him as much as we did ! What a legend
They do. Do you seriously think he just vanished? His movies are still popular
My 4 year old just loves his show. Now I gotta get my hands on some movies, Knoxville TN over here, know what I mean?
My 3 year old loves watching old ernest movies with me
Him and Ray Stevens.
i’m almost 26 and just watched ernest goes to jail, i’ve waited way to long
I met Jim in 1989 and spent a bit of time talking with him. The wonderful thing about Jim was he was so down to earth. Being an Appalachian highlander myself, I can assure you, he understood Appalachia and Shakespeare with equal acumen!
I wonder what he’d have made of Appalachian Chant as Orthodoxy grows more popular there. Fascinating sound.
I was born in 89 and loved Jim’s movies. It gives me some peace knowing he was a nature guy and kind and humble. He’s back home
There's only a handful of people that have passed that I truly miss and Jim Varney is certainly one of them.
My 7 yr old daughter got introduced jim via Earnest goes to prison. She laughed the whole time. I told her all about him and how I grew up watching him. Keeping his spirit alive through the generations.
Ernest P Worrell…electro-man
That's awesome. Next up have her watch Ernest saves Christmas perfect movie this time of the year.
@frog neckman. Yeah he was real big in the 80s. I remember watching all his commercials.
I loved his Saturday morning show. It was like Adult Swim, but clean. It even won an Emmy!
@@5roundsrapid263 "Aye VERN!" 😆
My parents and I saw his Elrod bit when we were in Nashville in the late 70s. I was 14. Elrod was a running joke in our house anytime anyone asked the time. My mom would call me Elrod and I’d ask, “Do you got any jello over at your house?” “what time is it?” When Ernest became a household name, I told my mom that I thought that was the Elrod guy. She passed in 2008, and I didn’t find this video until 2020 (I searched for years). I wish she was here to see this video.
Great story! Thanks for sharing.
I saw this routine on TV back in the 70s, and didn't know it was Jim Varney until seeing this RUclips video. My brother and I used to have a great time calling back and forth to each other, "What time is it?" "Make some fudge!" What a brilliantly funny man.
That's been one of the worst feelings, for me. I lost my mom about 7 years ago, and I see SO many things that I know she would have been interested in. She probably would've gotten a big kick out of this bit, since she grew up in the holler and would've understood it so much more. I'm not sure if she knew who he was before Ernest, but she was really fond of the "Know what I mean, Vern?" line!
Wow, he had them EATING out of his hand there. Jim was an underrated genius. I can only imagine how famous he might've gotten in the age of social media. He would've been a meme a minute. LOL
genius yep 4 sure .. 200+ IQ 😖wich i find rather insane haha
@@Ladosligese usually if your IQ goes much over 200, you're close to insanity. "There's a thin line between genius and insanity."

I love the impression he does of the mother, my grandma is from West Virginia and she talks exactly like that lol

Jim Varney's ancestors founded Varney, WV in Mingo County.
From the audience reaction, I can guess Jim is doing really excellent, specific, regional accents.
RIP Jim Varney (June 15, 1949 - February 10, 2000), aged 50
You will be remembered as a legend.
Gone too soon. There’s a great video of Jim joking around with Robin Williams. Not everyone can hold their own with Robin. Jim was one of the greats.
Jim was asked in an interview if Ernest was based on a real person, and he said that he came up with Ernest based on a number of people he knew through the years, and I have to think some of them are right here in this act.
I love Jim Varney's hilarious voices, rubber faced expressions, eccentric & hysterical characters, & astonishing slapstick! So funny & special & creative.
He's got to be my favorite physical comedic actor of all time! I like him even more than Jim Carrey & Robin Williams!
Ernest is my favorite comedy character. Hilarious & Heartfelt & Charismatic All At The Same Time!!
He could play some heavy characters like in that Billy Bob Thornton movie.
Wont-cha come on back here Vern, & have ya-self a nice laugh Vern. Don't let the Rona getcha down Vern. Heck, of we just have in there Vern... Well Vern I think wah might just make it outta this in 1 piece, whaddya say ayy Vern?
Happy late Thanksgiving :-)
I seen a video earlier today of Jim and Robin Williams !
I had no idea that letterman got "what time is it, are you cooking beans?" from Varney.
Wow
Holy shit
He was so good miss him on tv .
Rest in peace buddy ...
j c didn’t he play slinky from toy story
@@nicholasemiranda3057 yup
He JUST missed the 1980-81 SNL Lineup.
Wow he was way before his time. This is the blueprint for the redneck comedy tour. Also what an incredible actor he was. Gone too soon.
I miss Jim. We are both from Lexington, Kentucky. When I was 12 in 1985 he gave me a bicycle.
I was born in Lexington
I remember that he had a Saturday morning kid's show briefly. It was so creative and a little off the wall. He is truly missed.
"Hey Vern, It's Ernest!" That's the show. It's on DVD, if you want a copy. Someone's also put it on RUclips.
I always found him so hilarious! You can see whispers of Ernest coming out. 😊
I remember telling some of his jokes to my friend. I even used the arm behind the back prop. Every time I said "What time is it?" he'd be on the floor laughing. We both kept saying that to each other for years and it always brought a smile to our faces. RIP Jim.
I remember David Letterman sometimes saying "What time is it?" and "Are you cooking beans?" in that same voice. Now I know where he got it from.
Jim made us laugh so much growing up when we lived in cabin in Mountains in Blue Ridge GA. In the 80s. Great comedic actor and Ernest series were the greatest.
My late FIL was one of his best friends in Lafayette high school. They apparently talked pretty regularly for a while up until Jim got busy because he was getting famous. I think the last time he talked with Jim at all was when I started dating my (now) wife. We all were devastated to hear of Jim's passing.
My childhood was truly filled with laughter thanks to this man. Seemed like a genuinely great human being. The kids nowadays will never know what it was like coming up watching all of the Ernest films. May he rest in peace
Somebody needs to get Elrod a watch!
His movies were so much fun. They were silly, but all in good humor. I adored his humor and was sad when he died. He wasn`t that old.
Hung out with Jim back in the early 60’s at a coffeehouse in Lex KY called the Ninth Life. I was a budding folksinger and Jim was there every night.
Look at all the people that dressed so nicely! I wish more people did that now!!
For real! Whenever I watch old clips one of the main things I notice is how classily people used to dress, even up into the 90s. Most people look like slobs now.
It was a formal club. People aren't going to dress that way just to go to Walmart
@@Margatroid I grew up in the 90's. Faded flannel and overalls with one strap buckled was the norm. I think you need to get off the nostalgia
@@doctorfeinstone6524 No, none of that was "the norm" for going to see a comedian perform or going anywhere even remotely formal. You're describing the way high school kids dressed.
We fight for a world that no longer exists. By our sacrifice and faith may we once again gain it back.
Loved that dude when I was a kid! Seemed like a kind spirited man.
Most comedy from the 70’s has lost it edge but this still makes me laugh. I spent my growing up years in Louisiana back in the 70’s and this is actually how it is in the swamps.
I love the Virgil character, trying to sell the chevy. He could of made a movie about guy, or put him in one the his movies
Jim used that car lift joke in one of his movies
I miss him. He was and is my favorite comedian, actor and musician
I didn’t know he was a musician as well? Can you tell me a little bit about that?
@@DetroitFettyghost I don’t know if he made music, but I did hear him sing a few songs. :) He could sing like he only could sing.
he played dulcimer. there’s a clip of him playing on a talk show on youtube.
Blessed to have been around these characters coming up. Jim Varney could nail it
...man...getting introduced by MINNIE PEARL.That must have been something else.
My kids and I just watched Ernest Saves Christmas two days ago. He lives forever through entertaining generations.
That was his best movie. It's my favorite.
It's funny now that I'm older and I watch the old Ernest movies they look so corny but the nostalgia I get watching his movies makes everything alright.
Great stuff! Thanks Cousin! I remember the Braum's Commercials he did. He was always talking to Verne! I even watched his movies, the guy had a knack for rubber faces and GREAT slapstick. You can watch some of the Braum's Commercials with Jim playing Earnest here on RUclips.
He is so funny😂😂! A great actor and comedian! We truly miss him !!
As a kid, I remember all kinds of local shops would hire him to do commercials. We'd get "know what I mean, Vern" all day long...and never got tired of it. Eventually that bit turned into movies too.
You will forever be missed jim... I just know you have the crowds in heaven laughing... rip ernest
LOVE JIM VARNEY WITH ALL MY HEART AND ALWAYS WILL
I miss Jim Varney!
Rip what a legend. It was impossible to be a kid from the 80’s and not seen a movie that starred him in it
I remember seeing this on television in 79 had a good friend that loved this and I wish he could have watched it but he passed away on February 1st 2019 R.I.P.
Steve Watson, you are missed! 🙏
Wow damn, this was actually really good!! Gotta have more stand up material from him
I love Ernest P. Worrell.
This is awesome! I grew up in donelson. He did Purity milk commercials and lived down the street from my grandparents when I was real young.
first time i saw him on TV was he did a commercial for a local radio station 62 country WSUN & then we watched the Rousters in the summer of 1984
RIP Jim
He always seemed like a good man 😌
Been looking for this a long time thanks Hugo
Oh my gosh Thank You for this 💜
This is awesome. What a great find. Thanks for posting.
I’ve never seen this lol , I’ve watched it 20 times just to hear him say what time is it lol 😂
Wow that was a gem. Thanks for sharing this with JV fans.
Ernest goes to Camp is still my all time favorite movie by Jim
I first saw Jim Varney when he did the commercials for John L Sullivan in Northern California. Back in the 80s and 90s there were a lot of good, funny commercials (Where’s the Beef?, Round Table - the last honest pizza, etc). I would actually look forward to seeing commercials like the Hey Vern ones.
A great talent who's sorely missed. RIP
Thanks so much for posting! Jim was a funny guy. Imagine Minnie Pearl going on Sanford and Son and have Aunt Easter visit? That would be entertaining, know what I mean?
First time I saw him was in 1984, when he did a commercial for First Federal Savings in Honolulu. He was hilarious! There were several "Hey Vern" commercials in Honolulu and I'd always stop what I was doing to watch.
He was so funny
I was a huge fan of the Earnest movies growing up.I remember him in the Beverly hillbillies also.Great memories.
One of the great things about being a kid in the 80s.
What a riot Jim was. Glad he's still spreading love and joy with his comedy 💕👍
I play his movies for my grandkids. They are just as funny 40 years later 🤣
He didn't even have to close his act. Once the laughter got too loud, he was able to just walk away.
The head of hair Jim had lol
It was the 70s lol
@@joshuatraffanstedt2695 ,
Jim also just had naturally beautiful, thick hair, just like me! Brunette locks of glory 😁😊
@@joshuatraffanstedt2695 yeah, most of us had long hair in the 60s and 70s.
Uncle Jim
Good looking guy
My Dad Loved Vern and Earnest… the most is ever see him laugh. Jim was like a distant uncle I always wanted to meet!)
Thank you for posting!
My goodness, he was talented and funny. A truly gifted comic.
Too good for hollywood, in a class by himself!
Jim Varney was a genius . Wish he was still here .
One of the funniest men to ever lived.
found his fame with ernest did real good..i think that started with a car lot commercial.he was unique R.I.P...JIM
Such a great impressionist.❤
This is great. Thank you for sharing.
What time is it?
Very good. I'ma Workin class nobody. But I'd love to have him over every nite at our dinner table.
Thanks for uploading this :)
Used to see him often driving around my neighborhood in a DeLorean or a small convertible, going to a couple watering holes
I remember those pizza commercials...."Hey Vern, what's this Anchovie doin on my pizza pie?"
Know what I mean, Vern? Jim Varney the great.
I was born in 79. Hard to believe all the stuff I missed before my time.
The first time I saw Jim was on the Merv Griffin show doing the first half of this back around '76 or '77. My sides ached from laughing.
Being southern born I can relate to this.
I grew up watching him on local television commercials in Baton Rouge Louisiana when he first started doing the Hey Vern commercials for The power company if I remember correctly...😊
It's like seeing Ernest without his hat from his wild younger days, lol
Wow, I miss Jim. That was so good
Looked like Jim Stafford sitting there in the audience.
Funny as Hell and Talented. Well Missed RIP Mr Varney.
My Lord this is amazingly funny!
I imagine that if Michael Richards never played Kramer then Jim Varney’s take would’ve worked.
Now I know where David Letterman got his non-sequiters from 😂
LETTERMAN NEVER USED VARNEYS JOKES.
It’s the other way round, letterman is older
@@SAHtoshiDude They just mean that Letterman, on his late night shows, used to quote from this bit every so often.
@@TheresaPowers Oh yes he surely did
I still go by the name of his invisible buddy Vern signed Vern 😎
I love the Ernest movies! Way underrated!
Absolutely wonderful to see this!
RIP Legend and thank you
@0:51 Is that Jim Stafford?
The best part to me is how calm Virgil is tripping for the first time
I heard Dave use the "are you cooking beans..." line a bunch of times but TIL it was a reference to Jim Varney. Well it was a reference to Elrod I guess.
