At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded by the full horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who had fought a life and death war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is only one of many terrible memories I have from 34 years of active service, and 2 years hospitalisation. But when I remember the smiles on the children's faces, and their laughter at the terrible way we danced always reminds me that humanity will always find it's way through even the worst of times. I only watched it for the first time last year, my son put it on the TV. A lot of memories came back and a lot of tears.
My amazing Wife took me to see Queen at Wembley, U.K., in 1986 two weeks after I got back from Ethiopia as a surprise. I saw Queen live 6 times in all, they were incredible live. And yes, I am an old fart.

A few things to consider that day. Firstly Freddie was advised by doctors not to perform as he had a throat infection, he said later that it felt like gargling broken glass! Secondly, they were not announced as part of the bill until late on, after the tickets had been sold, so this was not a predominantly Queen crowd. Finally, due to the amount of acts that day, no one had their own set ups, it was literal,y plug and play, which caused many technical issues on the day. Which makes Queens performances all the more amazing.
Queen are a genre all of their own, they all wrote songs and are all in the songwriters Hall of fame and although predominantly known as a rock band, they do all genres. From Stone Cold Crazy (live at the Rainbow) credited as speed metal before it existed, to You Take My Breath Away (live at Hyde Park 76) a haunting love song and from Death On Two Legs (lyric vid recommended) a diss track aimed at their former manager to Seaside Rendezvous a music hall style fun song. They did everything in between as well, soft jazz, funk, punk, pop, rock'n'roll, sci-fi folk, and so much more.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Queen my friend.

The were announced as part of the bill on the day Bob Geldof announced the acts for Live Aid, and it was before the tickets went on sale. It wasn't a Queen audience in the normal concert sense, but it is a myth that they were a last minute addition.

It's good that you took it all in and enjoyed it. Loved watching your face as you realized you knew the songs. That performance is something everyone should see in it's entirety. I've seen it a bunch of times and never tire of it. If you are unfamiliar with Live Aid, I would encourage you to check out Wikipedia and learn more about it and what it took to pull it off and how massive the audience was. I believe it was 1.9 billion! It was a massive live event. I watched it from home live on tv. Imagine what it would have been like to be there in the stadium. I think it's still one of the largest events ever held, bigger than the Olympics! Queen is IMHO the best live band ever. Their music videos are good but their live performances are incredible. Freddie's energy and charisma live is unmatched. Some of my favorites are Somebody to Love Montreal 1981, Under Pressure Wembley Stadium 1986, and really anything else from either of those concerts. If you like heavier rock, check out Stone Cold Crazy from the Rainbow 1974. A fun old-time rock and roll song from the Rainbow 1974 concert is the Rock 'n Roll Medley, One other thing that is incredible to watch is a hidden camera of the audience at the Green Day Concert in Hyde Park where the crowd spontaneously starts singing Bohemian Rhapsody while they wait before the band goes on stage....will give you chills. Never seen anything like it! I hope you will explore Queen. You won't regret it!

By all means, please explore their music, and I would suggest starting with their early works and follow their development through the years. Stone Cold Crazy, Seven Seas of Rhye, Liar and in the Lap of the Gods from Live at the Rainbow 1974 is a good televised concert to begin. They always wanted audience participation, and wanted to put on a show, not just replay what is on their records. Live performances are almost always better just because of their light show, visuals, interaction with the audience and sheer energized talent

Enjoyed your reaction. For some early Queen consider reacting to Stone Cold Crazy live at the Rainbow 1974, White Queen at Hammersmith Odeon 1975 and You Take My Breath Away live at Hyde Park 1976. Also Now I’m Here, Under Pressure and Another One Bites the Dust, all live at Wembley 1986.

I love your reaction to this video! And I never get tired if watching it myself. Freddie & Queen at their best! I got to see this on TV at the time & was lucky enough to see Queen live in concert in Greensboro, NC. Best concert EVER! My favorite videos beside this one are Freddie with Montserrat Caballe (cah-bah-yay) doing Barcelona and one of Freddie's final videos doing These Are the Days of Our Lives. You MUST watch these!!

When Geldof called Freddie about Queen performing, he said, “it’s perfect for you, it’s the world.”

The best is that tickets to Live Aid were sold before Queen was booked for the Sow so many of the people there weren't really Queen fans but became fas that night. Queen stole the Show and the other acts couldn't beat them..David Bowie was standing in the wings as the next act and when Queen left the stage with a smile on his face e said "Bastards" Queen was the talk of the music world and hot their second wind.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Freddie had a bad throat and was told by the doctor not to perform. However, he did and smashed it and the rest is history. They could not be pinned down to one genre as beside rock they did ballad style and other types of songs and Freddie did opera with Montserrat Caballe. You should listen to their 'Barcelona' song.

A lot of the performers used this opportunity to introduce new music. Queen wisely chose to go with fan favorites, and you can see (or hear) how much it was appreciated.

Two of my favourites 'Fat Bottomed Girls' and 'Bicycle Race' (those two belong together).
Or you could try some of their movie soundtracks 'Flash's Theme' or 'Who Wants to Live Forever'.
If you want a demonstration of how big Queen was, and is in the UK. Try Green Day crowd singing Bohemian Rhapsody. Remembering this was filmed in 2017, more than 40 years after the song was released, and before the film was made.

Those who were there, witnessed 1 of the greatest concerts in human history. All the great singers performing there, gave the audience a magnificent memory to last forever. Freddy, Whitney, George Michael, Aaliyah, Prince, Michael and Bob Marley all died far too young. They all deserved to get old living good lives and still be with us today. Another great singer who's still with us is Billy Ocean. This *Suddenly* live performance is truly 1 of the best live performances of all times. ruclips.net/video/GAjInKiOkqo/видео.html

Bohemian Rhapsody 1975 freddie their first no1
Radio Ga Ga 1984 The works album, they'd just finished their world tour for it
this is Rogers first top ten,did well accross terrortories, and great for the stadium,no2 uk,16 US
Freddies well known call and respond,it meant a lot to him to make the crowd feel part of the performance rather than just deliver the song
the one he did in their next tour, was used on a screen at the 2012 olympics and the audiencee there joined in! Brian and Roger performed
Hammer to fall off the works album Brians
Crazy little thing called love 1980 album The Game but released in 79,Freddies, their first US no1
(follwed by Johns Another one bites the dudt off the same album)
Rock you Brians from their 77 album then freddies Champions no2 uk off the same album, news of the world
both played together on the radio
    both become anthems
Rock you went to no 1 in 2000 with revied lyrics and performed by five live with Brian and roger playing
Geldof said Live Aid would be a juke box..so they went witth that, and played short versions rather than less full songs
it worked well and created a good atmosphere and lifeted the audience, they had been there for hours
people rang in to give donations, but it was sluggish which picked up greatly when Queen performed
other bands played well..but didn't manage to create the same excitment
this performance despit his vocals is classed as one of the best and most say best of Live Aid
Brian composed,Freddie wrote the lyrics,of is this the world we created at the end of the day, just the two of them with brian on the guitar
