  • Neevesy has been waiting a long time for Triumph to put a 765 engine in a Daytona. But can the finished product live up to the bike he had in his mind?
He gives his thoughts on the Triumph Daytona Moto2 765 from a very windy Cadwell Park, we didn’t have long with the bike and so you’ll have to excuse the wind noise.

This bike is a cool exercise, but the Street Triple 765 RS is nearly as good without the pain every day. As an owner of the Street Triple it's hard to beat the versatility of being able to ride Sunday at the track and commute Monday morning with almost no compromise.

  • @Faithinthedock

I think this is a fair review. Well done Neevesy. I think Triumph have let themselves down on a few areas. They've been lazy with the switchgear and loom length.. For a limited 765 edition with a lot of fuss behind it, it wouldn't have taken much to sort these issues out. The biggest issue is clear at the beginning of this review. The 675 in white / red looks streets ahead visually than this 16 grand special! It doubtlessly rides fantastically but when you are releasing a very limited edition bike to huge fanfare, this is a bit lazy

    • @BrianEllicott

I agree with this review entirely. No doubt a fantastic bike but not at £15.75k even as a limited edition. Like you Nick I prefer the white/red 675 and that is exactly what I would be buying if I was looking for a track focused machine. The Panigale v2 at £15k would be a better purchase and just smashes the Trumpet out the park in the looks department.

I'm glad I got my 2020 RS -- it's 95% of this component-wise, 100% of the fun, more comfortable, and quite a bit cheaper. The only thing I'm envious of is the older, less stylized dash with a non-weirdo tach.

Gorgeous little bike. I don't blame triumph for not changing the look as ive always fancied that generation of daytona just for the look alone. Besides, triumph essentially resurrected an already out of production model just for the sake of making a limited production run featuring a moto2 derived engine. It wouldn't make sense to fully redesigned everything from the ground up just for a limited edition. I know i'd have one in a heart beat if i had the coin.

A great review, very fair. I just bought a bike (CBR650R).. and had a modern version of the Daytona been around, I would have bought that instead. I think there is a market for the bike, they should build one.
As you say.. a liter bike is too much for the road. The R6 and ZX6R are too gutless down low at road speeds. The Daytona fits just right on the road, for those that want it.
    In my opinion anyway.

    • @chazphot
      @chazphot 4 года назад

ZX6R is too gutless down low so you bought a CBR650R? Did you ride them both, I have and the ZX6 would walk the Honda at any engine speed, it's not even close. The CBR650R is great but it's a budget bike, the ZX6R is a proper sportsbike and leagues ahead in terms of performance.

I agree with your comment about riders of a certain age and sports bikes. In the late seventies I owned a Ducati 900 SS and an Guzzi 850 Le Mans . Thirty years later I threw a leg over a Ducati 916 ....I knew at that moment my time had gone. I'm now 73 and ride a Street triple 675R lovely bike, handles beautifully, sounds great and is quick enough for me.

Yano what I’d have this over a v2 any day of the week.v2’s will be everywhere shortly. The design is timeless And personally I love design. Its different to what sports bikes have evolved to being really sharp and angular etc and I get that its technically driven. I have my car as do most people for comfort and equipment etc so who cares if there’s a plastic insert and the loom is slightly too long, this was definitely made by a group of blokes in a room , given a load of parts and told to make it work and I think that’s cool.

Styling is subjective, but I agree with Neevesy - not a fan. This bike will sell because its limited edition and a very good ride, not for its looks which one could argue is secondary to handling in this segment. I'm a little surprised with the wind noise during the review. I know these reviews are usually done quite impromptu but for an expert reviewer like him still getting wind noise on his recording after all this time is surprising. Not saying I could do any better. Always been and will always stay a fan and subscriber of Michael and MCN.

I recently picked up a gix k7 600 after having 1000cc bikes. Personally I'm really glad I moved back down. I'm enjoying the level of usable power and great agility. Here in Perth, Australia we only have 2 tracks which aren't really anything to brag about and I find are more suited to the lighter weight bikes.
Yeah I do miss the instant, but lazy, power and torque of 1000s but I'd be more inclined to get a 1000cc naked.

At the same time I probably would rather buy Speed Triple RS (though Street Triple RS is splendid as well, but Speed feels more manly in a sense). Couldn't justify paying three grand more for 70+ less BHP with dated styling. Seen a few on autotrader so maybe when they depreciate in the future it'll be a better buy.

There reason that the sell of Daytonna slow down is because it never got updated. Yamaha sold tons of R6. If it got updated to more modern style with led and without a limited price tag I would want one. Imho, it is not a smart business strategy to only focus on single vintage/cafe market (not that I don’t like them). Now waiting for rs660.

Owner of a Daytona 675 here. I wouldn't buy this, just not good value. I really don't mind the styling which others seem to regard as too old. I like the styling, same as my 675. With the 765 Moto 2 edition, you're just paying for the carbon fiber. The D675 puts out 126hp, this 765 makes merely 2hp more at 128hp. The GSX-R750 was making 148hp and that's from 2011. For a 750 class supersport in 2019, I'd expect 145hp at least. Unfortunately the GSX-R never was sold here in India.
What I don't understand is why Triumph can't get some simple things right. Even with the 675. They equipped the 2007-2012 675 with projectors and then went backwards with the 2013 removing the projectors to save weight. They steering won't lock to the right side, only locks to the left , which is silly. The side stand has no tab to make pulling it out easy. And get this - the Street Triple 765 S does have a tab on the side stand for easy operation, but the 765 RS does not!!! Why Triumph why, can you get things wrong after getting it (partially) right on a variant of the same model?

Absolutely agree. It could look better. Little bit disappointing :(
Also another great point... why on Earth would I buy this over a Panigale V2... the V2 has more power, looks 100x better and it's cheaper!?

Good point with the Ducati V2. Yes, does look like a 1990 bike.

How can the design be dated when its absolutely timeless? Beautiful bike. Triumph forever

Yes, visuals are very dated. Riding it sounds like a dream, though.

Loved the 675R and couldn’t wait for this to come out with its Union Jack fairing, but seriously, WTF were they thinking with that harness?..... That’s just pure laziness.

Just buy a second hand GSXR750 for less than a third of the price...

Yes, or buy a new V2 for less.. This bike is about more than just numbers and sense. It's special, and I'm sure most of the buyers will have owned Triumphs, and likely 675's previously. It's definitely catering to a niche market, not just your track-day-junkies or guys who want to hoon around on something quick.

Think you summed it up really well, great machine to ride no doubt but somewhat dated with poor detailing for the asking price.

I prefer unpainted silver frame and long rear overhang. Paint would scratch and short tail needs an awful licence plate hanger.
