This video basically taught me how to drift. First i started with an old beat up E34 535i but now got myself an E39 M5, whipping it about every corner :)
Hello Mister Harris, I follow you from Belgium since a long time... You are just the best pilot journalist I ever saw. Sorry for my mistakes in English. If you come a day in Belgium, don't hesitate to contact me. I will show you the Molignee Valley where stars of rally like Patrick Snijers, Marc Duez,... had their best days. Best regards
Chris makes it look so easy. There are other things to take into consideration, which he does here without explaining, such as corner entrance speed, what line you need to take to allow enough room for the slide, and turning back into the corner during the slide to induce more slide if needed, which is what he's doing in between 6:27 and 6:30, and again more drastically at 6:41.
While oversteer is not the fastest way around a paved track, it's important to have car control so you can save yourself from crashing if you get on the throttle too soon. On a dirt track or rally course it allows the driver to steer the car since the front wheels aren't gripping very good.
Now once you got the three stages of the drift sorted out, the world is your oyster. You see, the possibilities are endless because you can induce a slide whenever you want to, you can control it, through steering and throttle, you can get away and come back into a straight line, whenever you want..
there are many ways to initiate a drift. clutch kicking, using a handbrake, preloading the car. here the surface is wet and slick so it is easy to break traction with just turning in and throttling
@raze203 At the start of the second drift, Chris applied throttle aggressively in order to get the rear tires to break traction. The differential may have momentarily locked due to the tires spinning at different rates combined with the sudden application of power. That would have caused the bang you heard.
I guess it's personal preference, I just find it easier to modulate when it's less sensitive and easier to counter when there is no added weight. For normal driving in the twisties or for a quick overtake sport is very good though.
@yukiotakata yeah he is immense! he does a lot for EVO magazine (in my opinion the best car mag in england) and i think he does some for Autocar aswell. i just got a 350z and i really want to try some power oversteer but finding a place where its safe to practise is not so easy.
@1697P Ofcourse this is very personal and can vary by different persons. Personally, I like it when i can just reach the top of the wheel with straight arms, that way my arms are slightly bend when I'm holding it 13:50
Yes sir. Just get a loose surface like some gravel or snow and have a ball. But be careful! A big ole diesel truck is likely to roll if put too sideways haha
sometimes microphones or speakers pick up frequencies from the engine electronics, notice the pitch exactly follows the rpms. I can't explain how but I've seen this phenomenon elsewhere too, even in one of my cars.
There is no superchargers on an M5.. but I did notice that whine is present even on the normal E39.. my cousin has a 528i and it whines as well, thought it was the torque converter but this is a manual and it still whines!
nah the 3.0d is way more than enough but the thing we are missing is the LSD(limited slip differential). Each time we try to drift without a LSD only one of the wheels will be spinning like mad thus losing power and losing the slide. if u have e60 u can try in a parking lot when its empty you'll see what I mean :D. e39 520d is a bit short on power :( Have fun and stay safe (:
toxik217 ahh gotcha, that's the 'lock' he keeps mentioning. Is the LSD only on the M3/5's or does the 'M' package include it as well, I'm assuming the former?? Thanks, you too :D
it does to a certain extent, although you still need to be fully aware of where the steering wheel is when you want to counter-steer. check this video /watch?v=5Tq2-yFU9_M from 4:30 you'll see he lets go of the wheel completely and it does spin on its own. It's possible to really forcefully steer into the turn then just let go and let the car start the counter-steer for you, but you will need to catch it on the way back or the car will just flick round in the other direction
@JSlShow Yeah that´s right.. if you talk about a rally driver, he´s awful.. but if talking about drifting and oversteering, Block has a great handling over his car in gymkhana
interfered? was it possibly a non-shielded aftermarket setup? or do you think about those flashy-fancy things that adjust the volume the more you rev, so you still can hear the radio, even whilst revving 5k+?
No, read the title. This is for power oversteering. You can find videos on shift locking, clutch kicking, handbraking, and weight shifting around here.
@yukiotakata He's writing for evo magazine (@evotv) and posts privately on youtube as @theharrismonkey . Also freelancing elsewhere; he has recently written for Jalopnik.
With all the JDM-wannabe 'dori' BS here, why has this *classic petrolhead instructional* (IMO) only got ~100k views? Deserves far more - not sure where the 6 thumbs down came from either. The Monkey has truly exquisite skill, watching mastery at this level whilst he calmly explains the process... I'll keep learning but that's a rare and fine talent. Bravo.
Its funny. I drift on Forza with a force feedback wheel and I've never drifted in real life. When I bought an E39 M5 (the car Chris Harris is driving) I drifted it and controlled it perfectly, getting out of the drift smoothly is the hard part though and thats what takes in car practice.
they use the handbrake to put the car into a slide once the car is sliding you can keep it that way by accelerating. at low speeds is not necesary if your car is powerful...in the other hand...handbrake will make it slide at any speed with or without power. The handbrake slide came out of rally just to put the car into slide mode at the required speed. He doesn't use the handbrake because the car is probably not his...since handbrake slide is harsh on the car components.
So how many cars got ruined as a result of watching this video? Haha.
I'm watching this even though I own a front wheel drive car
I know that feel bro lol
Hero! xD
I’m watching this even though I’m not old enough to drive
you can still drift in a fwd,. just not as simple
I’m watching and I have a 320d Auto and a 1.3 diesel Corsa
Chris in his early days is like any RUclipsrs when they just getting started. Legend
This guy makes it look soooooo simple!!!! Amazing driver.
This video basically taught me how to drift. First i started with an old beat up E34 535i but now got myself an E39 M5, whipping it about every corner :)
Love this car!! And Chris Harris is a good teacher I have to admit. I love his car reviews!
Love his steering techniques
One of the best videos out about how to start and the drift. Thanks man!!!
Awesome!So much detail and clear voice.
Dude you were doing an insane drift whule talking and explaining.... amazing man! sublime...
An awesome driver, great reviewer of cars and top bloke! If only he'd give me driving lessons! :)
Excellent instructional video. This really is superb car control and advice.
40 seconds in and I had to give this a thumbs up. Awesome stuff
Gather up instructions are very clear and just what I wanted to know
Good fun! Thanks for the upload!
My old nail m5 . Ha ha I love these cars had one many moons ago. Loved it
very nice driving, really nice advice.....
take heed experienced drivers.
You are awseome i admire you,i own an 320d e46 from the past '00,and i wish drive an M5,but now is not possible,greetings from Romania!

Amazing car ! and great driving
awesome video mate
Good video. Cheers!

No fair Chris, you are in the perfect car to do this!
respect that man knows what doing.
when i heard chis harris's voice... i went insane
great vid!
08 e90 m3 in the intro may be the greatest production BMW ever made
chris is a awesome drifter
Great video..

Can you use the same technique with a 4wd performance car like a 911 turbo, or Lambo?
Might Chris be the Stig?
Love the fact this company supports our peace officers !
@LP640ROADSTERdk
thanks i saw it
still think he would do great in a tv show
first degree carnuts,great reporter,connoisseur,great driver.
He's at evo, and I agree, great journalist.
great video
might have been the shock absorbers or whatever those were that maxed out on their travel and produced that bang.

I love that old 400hp M5
@Crowie74 ofcourse ;) the R8 V10 is perfect for powersliding ;)

@elmarko99
thanks i saw it
still sad that DR went down.
e39 is such a sick car!
no doubt chris is one of the best journalist/drivers working today.
sad drivers republic gone down .
where he is right now?
I always found it better with sport on, sharper throttle response makes for quicker adjustability.. same with steering weight
absolute genius! :D
wow I want him as my driving instructor
@1697P
Ofcourse this is very personal and can vary by different persons.

Wonder how many people wrote off their cars after watching this :D
good driving dude
this video makes me want an e39 m5 a lot
@yukiotakata He's at EVO magazine.
@salmanbioshock yeah me too... but apparently that's the diff locking
is this a m5 with turbo?
the noise likes a turbo???
great techniques
That is possibly the dirtiest M5 I have ever seen. I love it.
I wonder if I'll be able to do this in my 2003 Nissan Nivara...
I take the sandbag ballasts out of the back first though.
@MaddGrimm sounds interesting..... i had that sound on my M3 before.. it was my water pump lol
The shelling peas bit made me laugh.
@yukiotakata he's at Evo magazine
Chris makes it look all too easy, fabulous driving mate!! I've got a BMW 520d and am not sure I want to rip up my new tires... Just yet ;-)
u can't do what he did with a 520d, unless there is snow
toxik217 thanks figured as much! Probably need a 3-400bhp beast (minimum) to pull off what he did.
nah the 3.0d is way more than enough but the thing we are missing is the LSD(limited slip differential). sadly only M cars get a LSD. Not even the M135/M235 get a real one. This is strictly reserved for M3,4,5,6 :| Cheers :)
Chris calls it a drift... But you know thanks for the correction! 👍🏼👦🏽

interfered? was it possibly a non-shielded aftermarket setup? or do you think about those flashy-fancy things that adjust the volume the more you rev, so you still can hear the radio, even whilst revving 5k+?
That noise is the camera picking up the voltage being kicked out by the alternator from the cig lighter socket...
No, read the title. This is for power oversteering. You can find videos on shift locking, clutch kicking, handbraking, and weight shifting around here.
THE CONCASTINATION WITHIN THE COMMITMENT OF ACTION IS RELEVANT TO CONTROL ON TRANSITION OF THE 4 WHEELS.

the E39 is easy to drift due to 3 factors, locking diff, 400/400hp/ft lbs, long wheelbase
THE KING OF SLING!!
well, it is ... easy & difficult
but most of all: FUN & real driving PLEASURE
;-)
Could be the sound of the diff locking violently as he changes direction? But yeah chris is like the keiichi tsuchiya of UK...
@Talybanu88
it doesnt have a turbo
@9090336 what about teh blow off sound? would have been able to hear that no?
its the differential locking
@yukiotakata i think he works at evo magazine
Its funny. I drift on Forza with a force feedback wheel and I've never drifted in real life. When I bought an E39 M5 (the car Chris Harris is driving) I drifted it and controlled it perfectly, getting out of the drift smoothly is the hard part though and thats what takes in car practice.
As he entered at 1:58, I immediately started smiling uncontrollably.
E39 M5 ftw!

sweet
Hi chaps, how easy is it to drift an open diff mk1 mx5 with 115 bhp and good tyres? Thanks
@forbello
Comparing Block to Loeb is like comparing paper to a jet engine. Just throw the paper away, there's no comparison.
chris harris really puts every other auto journalist to shame
he needs his own show
E39 M5 FTW !
how fast do ya think you were going during those drifts?
@yukiotakata i think evo magazine
Miata plus wet road equals this on a daily basis plus 20+ mpg (: fun cheap and economical(as long as you dont hit a dry spot and burn tires off)
That sound is from the camera or mic connected to the car
