  • Quick explanation of Left Foot Braking filmed on site at the Team O'Neil Rally School. Left foot braking is useful for any race car driving and for daily driving on the street. Left foot braking is critical for rally car driving more than other racing because the drivers are constantly managing road speed, understeer, and oversteer. Feel free to post any questions or comments, we'll get to them shortly.

    I moved out a bit to the countryside several months ago and watched this video around about that time too. Part of my daily commute involves several km of twisty dirt road as well as some twisty tarmac sections. I started practicing left foot braking on my way to and from work each day and I am glad to say it has now just become natural to use my left foot to brake and slow down or balance the car through corners on both surfaces! I have started implementing it when I go to the race track too and am finding new levels of car control that were previously a mystery! This video really helped me though, particularly the tip about keeping your heel on the floor when starting! Prior to that I would always apply far too much brake force when I tried it.

Also I sometimes press the throttle a bit when breaking and have a motor spinning a little bit faster than idle which sounds strange for a second or two until I understand the reason. Had a better time learning the pedal feel on an automatic trans first. The switch to the manual went way smoother. Try it in an open lot , you may come to a screeching halt the first few. It also helps to be proficient at heel toe before you try as well as double clutch shift but I only really double in older cars, but every once in a while on my STi.

I also would like to hear the engine/see the tach so I could get a feel for how much engine braking vs load with the brakes affects the car. Maybe a similar video with interior and foot cams run at speed with engine sound and with one run done with no commentary and the same run again with commentary. Thank you for this video! I apply LFBing at all times, and shift without clutch when appropriate. I lost a wrx and have an automatic now. Left foot breaking in an automatic is the only escape from my emasculation! In a real car (standard) the transition from LFB to RFB is almost a process of logic if you need to clutch. It did definitely make me very neurotic about civilian drivers breaking through turns when they should do all of their breaking before they go into a turn! I also get irritated by people taking Corners at 2 miles per hour like their car is going to flip if they went any faster, but that is a completely different story. In the end, if everybody drove like they knew how to Rally then everybody would drive way better and there would be no such thing as a traffic jam

  • @flameofschy3382
    @flameofschy3382 9 лет назад +3

    i agree LFB is a good technique, but it needs real practice to be used on street, and i think it's more appropriate to be used in street cars with AT trans just like in karts, F1, and rally (rally in particular as brake bias is on the rear), the thing though with LFB really is it creates confusion - your brake lights keep lighting - with other drivers (as they may not really know if you're braking or what) on street and may cause accident. I drive normally on street but i use LFB in karts and race sims, i really think LFB is best left in racing on tracks

    Would be nice to see a run with the foot cam "flat out" through sections of the school. It's good to hear the audio and slower speed for instructional purpose, but it would be nice to have a view showing the feet and hear the engine at full clip. Gives a good view of how things are done at rally speed.

    so i skimmed the comments and didn't see anyone mention why you might even want to left foot brake. in a FWD car it lightens the back end, makes for a sharper turn in or can help swing the back around. same for AWD just not the the same effect since theres still power going to your rear. in a RWD car only thing i can imagine is it would allow you to keep you revs up while exiting a corner. and for all 3 if you have a turbo it helps keep it spooled up on the exit. basically all used on tracks/off road course.

    • @h3Xh3Xh3X
      @h3Xh3Xh3X 9 лет назад +9

      All cars will weight transfer forward when braking (as you said, lightens the back end), regardless if they are RWD or FWD.This gives more traction to the front tires, which are doing the turning. Lightening the rear will cause more oversteer, or like you said, sharper turn in.
      If you brake with the right foot, you are wasting time getting back on the throttle after the apex of a corner. The amount of time it takes to remove the right foot from the throttle and move it over and onto the brake pedal (and then back to the throttle pedal) will cost you precious time. You can accelerate quicker out of the corner if you left foot brake going in. With left-foot-braking, there is no lost time; the transition from throttle to braking is immediate. (Source: Ultimate speed secrets by Ross Bentley)
      After working up the necessary sensitivity in the left foot (kart racing will help with this), left-foot-braking will also help you drive smoother. It allows you to alter speed without upsetting the balance of the car as much. This means that you will not go beyond the limit of traction of the tires, going into a slide or spin.
      I really recommend the book I referenced, if you are interested in racing any sort of car in any sort of race!

      Denny Dubs in rwd you can use it to control some slip into the car. if you watch the OG Japanese drifters they use a foot brake feint to drift and hardly ever use the e-brake. you can drift really close to people by using the throttle and left foot braking to keep the front and rear of the car in check. touge and rally would see rwd benefits in left foot braking because some slip may be necessary.

    I have always left foot braked, and once it came in handy. I was driving on a two lane highway one night and a cat ran out in front of me. I didn't think much about it until I saw a dog coming out of some bushes next to the road. The first thing I did was brake as hard as I could with my left foot, but when I realized I wasn't slowing down fast enough, I put both feet on the brake and pushed through the ABS. I stopped with about 6m/20ft before the dog (which by the way was a huge white german shepherd) but thankfully I stopped before anything happened. I was the only one on the road and ever since I was getting lessons when I was 15, I have always left foot braked. I have tried right foot braking and all that happens is I don't know where the contact point is with the brakes, so I am overaggressive with them. Ironically, I am forced to drive automatic since I have no car of my own.

    That's a very important thing what he's talking about: get used to L foot braking first to feel the braking force...
    I remember when I've been trying the stuff in my previous car which was less sensitive on brake pedal and once I tried it on my another car I had the hard braking memory 'in my L leg'... I tried that for the first time on the car in fairly slow moving traffic intending to slow down just a bit, but It really surprise me that I brake really hard and the traffic begind me was really surprise - they could crash into me...
    It would be my fault in my opinion, but insurance companies always think opposite ^^'
    The best advice - try it first off road.

      When you get it PERFECT no it does no damage, but even the best drivers don't get it just right every time. If you can, practice in a $500 car or something until you get really good at it first. Somebody else's car, a rental car if you can find a manual, you get the idea haha.

    Is this car common of American cars? I find it interesting that your driving position is on the other side of the car to us over here, but the pedal arrangement appears to be the same, i.e the clutch is the left pedal, then brake in the middle, then gas on the right?

    Great video! Is this the car with the loud exhaust? I remember that being the only one without a rearview mirror, and the one I used to get the best time in the rallycross final exam. P.S. still haven't received my hat prize in the mail! :(

    My car's DBW cuts power after a few seconds of prolonged LFB. Acceleration is also blocked for a short duration. This is very dangerous...

    What's your stance on right foot heel toe braking then switching the left foot to the brake as you go through the corner?

  • @LazlowRave
    @LazlowRave 10 лет назад

    Side of foot shifting? I've heard the correct term as Toe-Heel Shifting. Figure it as "point your TOE on the brake, pivot your HEEL on the throttle"

  • @brianfreeman8290

    Very well presented and explained, but the actual benefits of LFB were ignored. Also, why LFB then return to the clutch to downchange, then return left foot to the brake. What's wrong with a single application of the brake, with whichever foot, then the downshift, in the traditional fashion?

  • @stigmsr1

    You'll be fine. I've beat the crap out of a lot of cars with automatics and put well over 100K miles in a couple mixing left foot braking and back in the day even power braking them. I have never had a torque converter fail on me. Automatics are easiest to learn in because you don't have to worry about shifting. I always make it a point to strictly left foot brake anytime I drive an automatic. You may go through brake pads a little faster than normal when learning to overlap the gas and brake.

      this is a lot of work for one video that came out four years ago, but you can use your audio hardware sound settings to set your speakers to "mono" instead of stereo and it should make them both play. You'd have to turn them back after though, or your videogames and music will sound weird.

    Thank you for a prompt reply<
    Is there a technique or a formula for specific outcome, Sort of like aiming for the apex and trail braking is used with FWD for example>
    To where left foot braking would be more beneficial in a situation A but not B in a different drive train?

    • @Teamoneilrally
      @Teamoneilrally  5 лет назад +1

      Yes there are a handful of different techniques based on what result you're trying to get, and it's pretty different in a FWD versus an AWD or RWD

    Hi!
    Very good explanation, but i still don't get why you would need to brake with your left foot?
    What are the advantages?

    • @balintfarago9760
      @balintfarago9760 8 лет назад

      in my opinion I only use left foot brake in turns. you can stabilize your car back in turns or dirft. i think in normal streets you dont have to use it. I only do left foot brakeing in rally training on a speed stage. Its only important if you are a rally racer or a drifter(but drifters mustly use handbrake)

  • @Wedge4Life
    @Wedge4Life 10 лет назад

    I can already do everything you showed in the video. I'm just not exactly sure how you use the brake against the throttle to make the car slide. Not sure how and when to apply the brake and why that makes the car slide... is that a lift-off over-steer type thing where you get the slide after because sometimes it feels like braking against the throttle just causes me to understeer, like when I'm in the snow.

    • @bobhope4288
      @bobhope4288 10 лет назад

      It seems to me, and maybe I'm wrong, but this is really not an issue on RWD cars, it's really more to balance a FWD car and to cause the rear to slide, if you flick the car into the corner, use lift-off oversteer or have a RWD car, this doesn't seem to be an advantage, unless you want to move more weight to the front.

  • @EvgeniiBondarev

    Can you please explain the no clutch shifting please? Especially the downshifting. I see you use the throttle. Is it like: turn the gear off then short throttle then turn the down gear on when rotation speeds are in sync?
    So the up shifting is just releasing the throttle and switch the gear off at the same time while the gears have no load (a really short moment) then wait for the motor spin to slow (1/3 of a second) then turn the up gear on.
    Do I understand the idea correctly?
    Is it ok for the gearbox and its synchronizers?

    I have a question and need your opinion. Left foot braking increases responsiveness mid turn, so in theory it has a similar effect as an LSD would have? The torque and braking limit slim in a way... What is your opinion on this?

    • @Teamoneilrally
      @Teamoneilrally  5 лет назад +1

      Left foot braking definitely allows you to control your wheel speeds much more precisely.
      If you're only using the gas on a slippery road, it's easy for an open differential to spin one tire (usually the inside of the corner).
      If you ride a little LFB in the same situation, it doesn't let that tire spin so it's exactly like you say where it acts as a limited slip diff.

    It's the case in all modern cars I've driven and tested this with. It could be that it's part of the legislation where I live (Europe). Also, being a qualified mechanic and studying automotive engineering I know what I'm talking about. I have tested this in diesel, petrol, (semi-)automatic, manual, you name it.
    So it could be different where you live, I don't know.
    Keep in mind that this isn't the case with vehicles which have a physical cable connecting the pedal to the engine.

    I know that Nissan's have brake override technology in case people stomp on both of the pedals in a panic situation. I wish there was an option to turn that off. Thankfully, I have not experienced it in a Subaru.

    I practiced left foot braking in traffic for a week and I wouldn't even realize I was braking with my left foot it was like I've been doing it for years. You just have to take your time to unlock the other side of your brain. But like he said practice before taking it to the dirt and gravel.
