Great match, great play, thank you for showing this... but... it highlights the main issue with tournament play. Sandbagging. There isn't a rec play court in the country where these guys would play at 3.5 level. This is 4.0 level play at absolute worst, probably more like 4.25 level play, maybe even 4.5 level play on some points. To go to a national tournament and sandbag this badly, which gives all the legit 3.5 players entered no chance to win at all, is just pitiful. I hope there is a way to policy this using DUPR or other ratings systems in the future.
I've heard how players manipulate DUPR ratings as well, it's sad
4.0.. 4.25 on a good day. But def not 3.5. And sandbagging for sure, as if there is a bunch of money on the line. Lol.
The players should unite their forces to have the Tournament change their rules instead of players getting upset with players. You cannot play up at Nationals, its by whatever your UTPR is. You could have been a 3.5 when you qualified, gotten better the rest of the year , but lets say you only drilled and did some round robins. Your UTPR would not have gotten higher and you are stuck in the same 3.5-3.99 range.
These players qualified for nationals over 6 months ago. They put in the time and hours to get better just as every other team in this tournament did. Do you expect them to not get better in 6 months of playing? It's not sandbagging, it's called practice.
@@shirleyweis how so?
This is the level of play I aspire to. Great points. This is like watching the attainable. The pros? Not so much. Thanks for posting this. Liked and subscribed.
Thanks for filming and the great commentary! Looking forward to seeing the Hanlons and Lums at future events!
Thanks for uploading Hanlons, class acts and awesome players. A pleasure!
Great playing!
Good stuff on the Gold Andy!
really nice level of play- easy to see the mistakes but also the skill to get to this level #intermediatemasterclass
4 Sandbaggers right there 😂No way they are only 3.5
This is the problem with competitive pickle ball right now
I guess neither of you listened to explanation on ratings in this tournament.
@@TC-dw6wg please explain the ''special' ratings for this particular tournament. I've literally never heard of any tournament creating their own special rating system. What a load of crap.
I mean… if they don’t have an official rating then it is what it is 😂
Same thing happens in tennis. People rate themselves and tend to underrate themselves if they never played competitive pickleball before, but were already really good. For USTA tennis, getting to nationals at a specific level automatically meant that player had to move up to the next level. I’ve never played competitive pickleball, but I’d imagine it’s no different for pickleball than it is in tennis.
Great video of good play, sportsmanship, and commentary.
Excellent commentary! Thanks for sharing.
appreciate you sharing this video with commentary!
Great playing!
3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 it's all relative to clubs, regions, and tournament circuits. The commentator's statement of how they are in the 3.5 here but would be 4.0+ in any other tournament seems to support that. DUPR may be a step in the right direction, but from what I have read, there are ways to massage that rating.
Rubbish! They are not 3.5 players regardless of where they are from.
Rubbish you say? 😂😂
PB ratings are not relative. Where did you read this or who told you that? The only thing that varies is players over stating their rating in rec play so they get to play with better players or understating so they can sandbag in tournaments to win medals against weaker opponents. The commentators statement is BS.
Did this match take place on Halloween? Because I’ve never seen better 3.5 costumes from these 4.5 players. Incredible!
Alex is a 4.8 doubles rating. Cameron is a 4.37. how are they in 3.5 tourney ? just curious. maybe at the time they were 3.5 to 4.0?
It seems to be that unless it’s a lob or overhead ball, you don’t try to hit it fast as hell to keep them in the backcourt, you just carefully aim it there - it seems
No unified rating system crazy. This year’s 4.5 mixed tournament, Gabriel Tardio was playing with a DUPR rating of 6.34. What rating system do they use? If players have competed in pro (PPA, APP, MLP) why are they competing below 5.0 even taking into consideration combined average ratings.
They use UTPR rating for nationals , so if you play unsanctioned tournaments the whole year , you are stuck in whatever your UTPR is .
DUPR is irrelevant for this unfortunately
#sandbag
9:11 wow, thats great skill
Yes, fantastic blocks!
3.5, really? They are all excellent players and in my area, they'd be ranked much higher. So fun to watch!
I'm new and this is almost certainly an obvious question. But there seems to be conflicting information online about the side you serve from in doubles. My friends and I were playing that even=serve from the right and odd=serve from the left, but watching this I guess we were wrong!
Here's a clear explanation of serving rules: usapickleball.org/what-is-pickleball/how-to-play-old/basics/serving/
It depends which player you look at but it's easier to track the player who started the match on the right. So say you served first on your team at zero, then every time it's an even score, you are on the right. And when it's an odd score, then you are on the left side.
If Home Depot runs out of sandbags, I know where they can get some more!
Relished to beginning where it’s explained how the rating works here.
He said that they’d be 4.0 or 4.5 in any other tournament. These guys are absolutely 3.5-4.0. At best just above 4.0. Haha not even close to 4.5. The amount of shots that would have gone out and the lack of consistency. I’d say this looked like a 4.0 match
This is sandbagging at its finest
Everyone at Nationals = Sandbagging
Can you throw the ball up in the air when serving?
Yes, you can throw the ball up as long as you don't spin the ball and the paddle doesn't make contact above your waist.
@@TeamHanlonPickleball cannot be thrown or tossed, check it out! No tossing which means throwing the ball up in the air! Very clear on that!
Way to sandbag fellas for a medal.
You wanna see some real sandbagging? Go to a USTA nationals.
Jeez these guys would be 4.5 where I live 😅 Awesome playing.
sand baggers in every tournament.
California is know for their high levels on average
They'd be 3.5 here in FL
Really great match. Amazing skill by all. It's a shame about the ridiculously loud music and announcing from the pro-side, it felt like I was at a wrestling match. The only thing missing was the announcer yelling, 'let's get ready to ruuuummmbble...!' Really annoying and unnecessary.
How bad do you want a medal ? Just watch these sandbaggers.
Nationals is known to have high level competition , take a look at how the rules are set up and why some players are stuck in the division they play in.
Also keep in mind , some of these players improve greatly over the year before nationals, but if they dont play sanctioned tournaments their UTPR remains the same and you cannot play up in Nationals.
@@pbkid11 Thank you for this comment!
@@pbkid11 When I watched this, I was thinking this is some of the worst sandbagging I've seen, so thanks for the clarification, that makes sense.
@@ckrealtor11 completely understandable , these were good players on both sides .
At the beginning of 2022 Alex Tran was already playing 4.5 doubles. It’s sandbagging.
is Andy's serve illegal???? he is tossing the ball up before he serves it?
It is now not when this came out
You're confusing it with the Drop serve, you cannot toss the ball on a drop serve. The volley serve you toss it up as high as you can as long as you hit it below the navel.
i like music while playing pickleball but not that loud
Good commentating 👏
Yes they are sand baggers for sure 4.0 for sure
Do they use Dura or Franklin?
Franklin is used at Nationals.
When are you going to commentate pro matches?
The one guy hit the ball around the end of the net into the court, is that legal?
Yes, it's called an ATP (around the post).
@@TeamHanlonPickleball thanks bro I appreciate it, gonna try that play.
Toughest competition in the world aka most sand baggers.
And Gillian is DUPR 4.69. Looks exactly this skill level.
Funny how they play like their hair's on fire at these levels (even if they are sandbagging) then, watch the Pro and 5.0 levels who play MUCH more controlled games.
Very interesting.
both teams are sand bagging......
If these guys think they're 3.5 then I must be 0.5 playing with a wooden paddle, an indoor Onix rubber ball while outdoors, and always standing 2 feet in the kitchen.
You are a 0.5 player! 😂
4.0-4.5
3.5???? Me think not even close, more like 4-4.5
Why would anyone think that people would enjoy loud music playing during official matches? Why rely on 1930's loudspeaker technology to make annoying and distracting announcements while people are playing instead of using the cyber technology available to us today?
Enjoyed the match but, Background noise was obnoxious
Give them a call and tell them to turn down the music next year. Thanks.
😄
@@TeamHanlonPickleball Haha , love this.
some of the worst sandbagging i’ve ever seen, what 3.5s are doing mid court resets and long dink rallies, this is so sad to watch hope these guys play the level they’re suppose to play
Should be in 4.0... yikes.
People that think this is 4.0 play are so hilarious... too many games at the YMCA. One of the biggest differences in the jump from 3.5 to 4.0 is shot placement, strategy, and CONSISTENCY. These guys are mid 3.5s for sure (at the time of this tournament)
They make odd errors so I’d say 4.0 tbh.
That music is just annoying! Great match, lousy club.
very annoying loud music!
And who thought the loud music and buffoon on the microphone was a good idea for a pickleball tournament? 🤷♂️
