Puerto Rican Rice Recipe:
- Warm pot (use a low flame)
- Add enough oil to cover the bottom of the pot (about 6 tbsp)
- 1/2 - 3/4 can of gandules (drain liquid first)
- 12 - 14 olives (Alcaparrado Manzanilla Olives)
- 2 tbsp Sofrito
- 1 packet of Sazón ( con Culantro y Achiote)
- 1 1/2 tbsp salt
- 8 ounce can of tomato sauce
- 4 cups of water
- Turn up flame to high
- Add 4 cups of white rice
- Once it starts to boil, stir every couple of minutes so rice doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot. After the rice has soaked up all the ingredients, lower flame, cover the pot and let it cook for 55 minutes. feeds approx. 6 people
- *Optional: Add Salchichón (farmer sausage) cut in small pieces after adding oil to pot. - Хобби
Steps
1. Pour oil and cover the bottom of pan
2. Pour beans
3. Slightly mix
4. Add 12-14 olives
5. Add sofrito
6. Add salt
7. Stir
8. Add sazon
9. Add tomato sauce
10. Add water
11. Turn heat all the way up
12. Mix
13. Add rice
14. Stir occasionally but not too much so it can actually cook
15. After it’s partially cooked lower heat
Ingredients
- [ ] 1/2-3/4 of the can of gandules verdes beans
- [ ] Optional: add alcaparrado manzanilla olives
- [ ] 2 tbsp sofrito
- [ ] 1 1/2 tbsp salt
- [ ] 1 Sazon
- [ ] 8 oz of tomato
- [ ] 4 hot cups water
- [ ] 4 cups rice
Thank you
How much does 4 cups serve I got 15 people coming over for a party is 5 cups of fluffy long grain rice good enough
@@brandenjohnson29806 cups will be fine
I just love how it goes straight to the instructions . No one talking for 10mins and having side convos ! Can’t wait to try it out
Yessss! And the música is Perfecto !
It’s all you need♥️
I know rt? Lol
Exactly!! I hate a talker just get to the point
Yes love this I would put some Bachata or meringue music instead.
Yes love this I would put some Bachata or meringue music instead.
Love this recipe! Comes out perfect every time. Also love that there is no talking, just straight to the point directions. 👌🏾
hey where is the ham
Always use frozen gandules , canned gandules usually breaks apart. (Grandma always taught me that) lol

I agree lol
Thank you for this! I’m making rice today and forgot the beginning a little bit it’s been a while since I’ve made it!
When I make arroz con gandules, I also add garlic, homemade sofrito, red peppers and onion, all thinly cut, sometimes I put jamon, other times I put pork meat cut in small pieces, and it turned out DELICIOSO..
This gonna be kinda a stupid question right when you put the rice in right you have to clean rice before doing it right?
@@christianicaza21, Hi, it depends on what kind of rice I’m using, when I use Jazmin long grain rice I don’t clean it, but if I use medium sello rojo or cinta azul rice I do clean it, but you really don’t have to do it...
Yees the pork
I do mine the same way. Homemade sofrito. But I use achiote seeds to color the oil. I also use tocino.
@@christianicaza21 yes, wash your rice at least once before cooking it...❤️
My best friend is Puerto Rican/Dominican and she makes the best food, oh my Lord 🙌
I'm Mexican and we swap our families recipes to eachother, which is an honor in my opinion, and fell in love with Puerto Rican food. Yes, Lord 🙌 she made me chuletas with arroz con gandules and I praised her cooking for days. I'm blessed having her as my friend ❤
OMG!!!! I followed your recipe and got the exact taste I was looking for. A friend of mine used to make it for me all the time before she passed away. Now I can make it myself! I also added chicken pieces like she use to.
That sounds even better. How much chicken did you use?
I’m so sorry for your loss. 🙏🏽💜
Sorry for your loss. Keep their memory alive with fire arroz con gandules. 🔥
That’s how my Grandma Pepita cooked it. She boiled the chicken first, deboned it, used the broth in place of hot tap water. I also seem to recall she added saffron which might already be included in that seasoning packet. I think she also used a small can of tomato paste in place of the tomato sauce. I believe a whole jar of olives (I prefer slicing mine first) along with diced onion are also added to the pot. 🫒
🫂✨
I made this dish today for Christmas along with Pernil omg it came out so delicious 🤤 . For those that are on a no sodium count you can add pink Himalayan salt it’s not salty and they also have a no salt added Sazon con culantro y achiote I use this and love it less salt/ sodium content. Happy holidays.
My grandma said add the whole can gandules. 😆, greetings from a Puerto Rican mixed kid in Hawaii.
Mixed? Shame on your parents!
@@teresamyers6992 wait why is that shame, here in Hawaii we are practically all mixed, most people are at least two ethnicities. I’m Puerto Rican, Spanish, German, Irish, Filipino, Indigenous Mexican so it’s all wonderful parts of who I am.
@@teresamyers6992 Shut up, you evil, demon-spawn.
@@malenaboy Ignore that evil person. They’re stuck in the older generation where they could barely see past their privilege.

Thank you so much for this. My rice came out perfect. I've tried so many recipes where you stir every 20 minutes and it was always hit or miss. Thanks to you, I don't have to guess. Thank you a million times.
Omg this was amazing. I did 2 cups of rice so I did reduce the ingredients as well and omg this came out to my satisfaction I've ben craving this so long now
Did u leave it for 55 mins or less?
Less then that . I don't remember exactly how many mins :( but enough to ware I new it was ready
I tried to make this but couldn't find the song..
Excellent video. I have had quite a few family members try to teach me years ago to no avail. I have also looked online and these were the simplest instructions. I was not stirring enough in the beginning so there was barely any regular rice most of it was stuck to the bottom..lol. This was perfection. Thank you!
Just made it and it came out perfect!! Steppin up my latin food game. First time making spanish rice. Muy bien!
Haha yessir
Please don’t call it Spanish rice, it is not Spanish rice.
Puerto rican rice 🍚 yummmm
My go to!! I add two sazon packets, just my preference but it comes out great every time! Thank you!
Muchisimas gracias por esta receta. I made it today for the first time, y salio por la maceta, chica. Thank you!
Been looking for a nice simple recipe that I can use to build my own from, and this is perfect. Great video and as others stated, straight to the point...
I love the music. One of my kids came in and started dancing
It looks delicious , it remind me when I was a kid in Puerto Rico and my mother use to make it exactly just how you did it , thank you for bringing back those memories.

Making this right now 😃 I love the music 🎵 that accompanies it
My ex’s family is Puerto Rican and I miss eating this rice so much. It’s not exactly the same obviously, but it still hits the spot. Thanks for the simple recipe and video!
Dancing at the stove while I'm making this dish 💃🏾. Added the sazon, omitted the salt...came out GREAT. Served with chicken fried pork chops, sweet plantains and shredded cabbage, red onion, carrot salad with a vinegarette dressing. 😋
Sounds amazing. Does anyone know how to make either domican or puertorican beet salad ..My DIL is hipanic - American but I cook everything cuz all my adult kids work.
FINALLY a simple recipe, the basic of the rice, I know you can add OR take away but its about the rice. Thank you thank you
Thanks to this step by step I can finally make delicious authentic Boricua rice. I use this recipe and add in some flavors I learned from my Puerto Rican in laws ❤️
I made this today and it came out very good. I am so happy to finally have me some Spanish rice for the first time in years.
Thank you I love the way it’s explained. Making this for my husband for Sunday dinner today🧚🏿♀️💜💜

After years of trying to perfect Spanish rice I finally did and I thank you… ❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is not Spanish rice.
Thank you sis for the video. I was trying to make the perfect spanish rice for years and I finally got it right thanks to you❤
My late mother in law often attempted to show me how to make her arroz con gandules...And thanks to your recipe, I no longer feel the guilt of not passing on this incredible dish..Thank you for how simple it was to follow :))
Some Puerto Rican cook do different I guess depend where u from. So weird. But looks good. We use caldero and not those ollas.. looks yummy 😋🙏❤️ I put jamoncito tocino and platano rallado y hoja de guineo para el sabor. And those ajice from the island is the best
Yea, I use jamoncito too, as I know the one you use platano rallado y hoja is the one they call apastelado. Me has dado idea. I am going to try that with jamoncito tomorrow for Christmas Eve. I have leaves left from a hallacas recipe a friend did on my you tube channel. A question, could it be green banano (guineo verde) instead of plantain (plátano), I dont have plantain right now.
. El que ella hizo queda bueno también y es más bien para cuando no tenemos jamón u otros ingredientes.
I agree it's so weird the way she cooks. I stir-fry the rice mixed with sofrito, tomato sauce, jamoncito and Sazon. And definetly Caldero!!!
Am from puerto rico. And I learned way different to cook arroz con gandules. She didn't even washed the rice, no, no, nope. Am sorry but, that is no a real arroz con gandules. 👎👎👎👎👎
Wasn’t that a longer way.. And slit of stirring
I followed this recipe and it turned out great!! Rice was no sticky at all!
Amazing, i tried different times with different recipes on you tube, and this one came out great the very 1st time.I followed it to the tee. and turned out great thank you very much.
I make it the way my grandmother made it, but yours looks delicious👍😊
One of my best friends was Puertorican .Sadly we lost her a few years ago .She always had me and my kids over .She had 7 kids and a bunch of grands and foster kids. God love her, she was the best cook .
Great recipe... It is very similar to mine, except that I add chopped bacon or ham, whatever I have on hand. I also add two cans of gandules (without draining the water). And I use 3 cups of rice to 2 cups of water. But I do think that the rice to gandules ratio is pretty nice. There is no right way or wrong way, it's all Boricua! I'm actually making some right now!
However, if you really want to add a nice kick of flavor, add a cup of shrimp! I do that once in a while when I'm in the mood for paella but don't want to go through all that work! 😉
Currently asking this for thanksgiving, thank you !
I’ve got the lid on and whether it’s amazing or not in the end I had fun dancing to the music while cooking it ❤️ Thanks for the fun
This is my second time doing this thank you for making the video short and to the point
Looks delicious. I looked up alot of rice and beans recipes. This one seems like the easiest way to make it. Thanks
I used your recipe and I loved it! I'm a spoiled by my tia's. I live far away from my family and I miss the food!!! Thank you!! More videos please!!!!!!!
Love this recipe! I made today to bring to dinner with my in-laws and I’ve had 2 bowls already 😂
👏👏👏Looks beautiful delicious. Thanks so much for the step, by step...for a beginner like me. Truly appreciate it! 💜
Idk why I didn’t think to come to RUclips university earlier to learn to make this rice. This is my favorite Spanish rice. I made it (well tried) a few times and failed but tonight I definitely redeemed myself. Thanks for this 😋
Thanks for the recipe! It’s delicious!
I love this recipie! My mom said not that much salt and, no mom I needed all that salt 🤦♀️. I’m using it for the 3rd time right now. Thanks!!!
Great recipe. Saved my thanksgiving dinner! Thank you!
I love me some Arroz con Gandules !!!!!! thank you, mama!!!!
The music is perfect!! I love it!! Great video. Thank you for sharing :)
Thank you for this video 🙌🏾
This came out very close to mi Abuela's. I added diced ham first and fried it up. Then, added half a large onion diced and 3 cloves garlic before adding the rest of the ingredients. I then modified the amount of salt to only 1 tbsp. and found that to be perfect. I also drained and rinsed my gandules and added 1 full can. I always wash my rice and so I did that before adding it. I used olive oil instead of canola. For variety, you could add Vienna sausage, pork or Hispanic salami instead of the ham. I made homemade corned beef and potatoe empanadillas as a side dish to the rice. Felt like when I was a kid!
Been trying to make this rice for a while followed ur recipe minus the olives.. It came out perfect!!! Thnk u
You gotta add a couple olives at least for flavor. Ypu can pick them out but they add a flavor that is necessary. Imo
Awesome video!! Thank you for sharing 😊
wow. looks so easy. I've had p.r. rice many years ago and loved it. I'll have to try your recipe. thx.

I've been using this recipe for a while now. I can honestly say this is the best rice I've ever made. I've tried others, but this has always come out perfect every time. Thank you for sharing your video.😊😉☺️👍
Do you have to wash the rice first before adding?

Perfect!! 😋😋, Can't wait to try. Thank you for Sharing 🤗💕

Best recipe ever, as my mom would say less is more, because compared to other recipes where they add so much different veggies would drive me insane. Thank you so much. Wil be making it for lunch

I'm cooking some right now...Hopefully it's comes out right 🤞 lol. I've tried making puerto rican rice so many times without looking at youtube videos. I went by friends recipes. I failed every time 😭. So i finally decided to look up some puerto rican rice how to videos lol.....I'm scared of the 55 min wait at the end. I hope the rice doesn't get burned 😩.
