कहा जाता हैं की अजंता की गुफाएं बनाने के पूर्व निर्माणकर्ताओं कुछ गुफाएं पास के पीतलखोरा में बनवाई थी। वहा की रचना भी अजंता जैसे ही घोड़े के नाल जैसे थी, परंतु छोटी। पर पहाड़ी के पत्थर कमजोर निकलने के कारण उन्हें पीतलखोरा का काम छोड़ना पड़ा। इसके बाद बड़ा निर्माण कार्य अजंता में हुआ।
