The Last Crusade film wasn't the only film it was modeled after, but some Buster Keaton ones in the silent film years and Hayao Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky were other films it was modeled after. Data East is much better than you think.
The final fight against the Dark Ogre is straight up the third boss from Gunstar Heroes. Ironically, M2 wanted to port Cliffhanger to a few systems, but they were asked to do Gunstar Heroes for Game Gear. There's an alternate universe where we got a Cliffhanger sequel...

So it turns out that the main programmer of this game later ended up working at Treasure. Anyone who played both Edward and Gunstar Heroes should quickly notice more than a few similarities.
we used to call this game "El Zorro JR" `probably imported illegally in mexico but was at a pizza hut here. This, mortal kombat, revolution X, super sidekicks and Virtual fighter were there
If I remember correctly, this version cut out most of the cutscenes and the Stages are arranged differently. It puts Stages 1 to 3 (Boat and Train Chase, Vehicle Venery, and the High-rise Hijinx), originally flashback levels, before Stages 4 and 5 (originally Stages 1 & 2 - the Seaplane Skirmish and the High-flying Dogfight) and just before the final Round. Just look for the *Replay Burners* video and you'll see what I mean with the differences.
I feel sorry that this game doesn't get much credit as well as the Indiana Jones franchise, compared to Uncharted. If people think this game rip off a game that was made in the 20th century, need to think again and explore the past.
Late reply. The power system represent your life bar. Each time you hit the enemies, the power goes up and life meter increase and goes down if you get hit by them or hazard. Also this game has lives counter, once it reaches 0, you're dead for good and it's game over.
Nobody ever mentions the fact that Edward Randy has numerous similarities to the Anime TV series "Nadia - The Secret of Blue Water": - Same cinematic steam / dieselpunk setting - Same year of release - Same development hell issues - Same narrative gimmick as the keystone for activating weapons of mass destruction. Not for nothing are they among my favorite anime and videogames of all time.
Nice one! I saw this game only once before and I never knew what it was called until today...28 years later!!! I used to collect PCBs as well; would have been nice to have this in the collection. Data East games had a certain feel to them.

So I wasn't imagining things. I played this game a lot in the arcades, and I remember the robot and the air chase being earlier in the game

You can sway all 360 degree. Very powerfull at stage 3.
