Game Review & Impressions

Released in 1989, Spark Man is yet another of arcade gaming's most baffling oddities. This side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter might look reasonable in still screenshots, but anyone who's played it will understand just how rubbish this is. The fact the game opens with a weird cutscene that's clearly meant to be some humorous interpretation of Michelangelo's "The Hand of God", except it involves some weird android being tickled on the nose, sets the scene for aptly for what is to follow.
The biggest influence by far is the RoboCop coin-op, with gameplay focused on shooting enemies on various platforms, not to mention level design and artwork paying more than just homage being paid to Data East's game. However, there are plenty of other influences on display here, including Green Beret/Rush 'n Attack, enemy designs that look suspiciously similar to those from Rolling Thunder, and level graphics bearing uncanny similarities to Bionic Commando and Bad Dudes Vs. Dragon Ninja.
Unfortunately, SunA also forgot to take anything that made those games fun into consideration. The gameplay is terrible, enemy placement and AI abysmal, and generally too difficult to be even remotely enjoyable. The end-of-level boss involving shooting a bunch of guys hiding inside an armoured triceratops is just utterly stupid, not to mention near impossible to beat. Spark Man is coin-op jank of the highest order and should never have been released commercially.
I guess, if anything, the fact it exists means I get to make a video about this total oddity some 30+ years after its release.

A moment of silence for those who actually paid good money to play this.
😂LOL that nose scratching at start
There are many things in this abomination I cannot explain.
That's not an understatement
It's like playing Rolling Thunder on a 2 day crack binge.🥴
Some pretty bizarre Kusoge action, there. The strangest boss has to be the metal triceratops with more bad guys coming out of his mouth than it's physically possible to fit inside.
The fact you have a word (Kusoge) to describe this mess intrigues me. What does that mean?
@@Kamawan0 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kusoge
That looks like Robocop 3 on home consoles, but even worse.
I didn't know this game, thank you very much for the video.
Thanks for the upload. I agree with the last sentence in the description.
Just wanted to add:
The sound design - both the music and and sound effects - is a torture on it's own. No bass, soft 8bit era shooting sounds with elevator music in the background.
The animation is acceptable most of the time - at least for that era -, but there are some cases like the 4 frame animation walker at 4:00 that makes this game hard to watch... even muted.
The attract mode music before you insert coin was taken from the arcade game Gauntlet. The 2nd level boss at 4:00 is an AT-ST walker from Star Wars. The leaping black panthers on stage 3 are from Castlevania. The 4th stage boss at 8:30 is Jabba the Hutt resting on his pallet with his tail curled up. The stage 5 boss where you fight against the Hind helicopter in 3rd person view at 11:25 is from Rambo III on sega Genesis. Lastly, the music at the end screen after beating the last boss at 20:37 is The Ecstacy Of Gold from the Clint Eastwood movie The Good,The Bad & The Ugly
You forgot the ditty at 0:24 that is clearly a ripoff of the main theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
You forgot to read further where I clearly identified the music and even provided the name of the song
2:58
Ahh yes !
Who doesnt remember the best diner around town called "dicks"?
Makes you wonder what's on the menu
Spark Man is really a run-&-gun shooter that plays much like a hybrid of Rolling Thunder, Contra and RoboCop. Awesome! 😊 Hats off to AL82.
I believe these are the same people who made Hard Head 1 & 2, also arcade games with strict music resemblance(at least for the prequel)
You're correct, both are made by Suna electronics
Hyper realistic almost to the point the US Army would use this as a simulator.
This looks like a spin-off of the 1988 video game The Adventures Of Captain Comic. Like it takes place in the same science-fiction future world universe. I know that the story of Spark Man is not connected to Captain Comic, but it has a very similar strange and weird dark sci-fi comedy feel to it, just like that other video game also does, too.
Why the horse??!!!😂😂
Hey...WHY NOT? ಡ ͜ ʖ ಡ
@@randypeppercorn1865 you know what, after mulling it over.......why not is right!
Birthday 1994, age 16. So this took place in the future of 2010.
I knew all bets were off when Mount Rushmore wrapped for the third time.
I did not, however, anticipate the AT-ST, nor the final boss to be a forklift.
And don't forget the Evil Jabba The Hutt as boss! And i think the Helicopter is from Rambo 3.
Weku weku wekuweku
The suna electronic game has a very strange sense, but I keep remembering why.
The most crackly game at the arcade.
The 2nd boss is an AT from Star Wars and the 3 is Jabba the Hut ??? 😅😅😅
SunA ❤
Gracias por compartir.
That swiped Hajime Sorayama art though
The game could have been named "Weirdocop" 😄
It might have curbed expectations a lot better, actually!
If you look at the before game information screen on Spark Man, it shows them as both male and female. I wonder if this is one of the earliest games to show this.
very strange game lol Star wars boss, weird music and sound effect, short life :D One the best japanese mad game ^^
😂 이거 한국에서 만들었어
Star wars boss?
There are two of them: walker and zombie Jabba.
@@OdaVenom yes, sorry my english IS bad

this is like the slut of arcade games, besides whats already been mentioned bitta operation wolf, cabal as well, what a weird game 🤣 thanx AL82 keepem coming🤟
🎄⛄🎁🎅 All the best for New year 2024! P.S. What is your opinion about number of views in the latest weeks? Me, I observe much less viewers. Is that the same on your channel?
Honestly I thought shooting the pilots to crash the boss machines was pretty neat..though yeah the game as a whole is deranged. Tbh that's why I enjoyed showing it to my friends when I played it in MAME! But if I remember right I had to cheat to beat The Forklift...
This kinda to the Rolling Thunder games
Looks like a lazy mashup of Data East's Robocop arcade game with Rolling Thunder... with a ton of 80s movies ripped off for their aesthetics.
I kept waiting for an answer as to what that electric finger touching that robot lady's nose was about and... nothin'!
Summary of game budget:

Robocop
😂😂😂
So Sparkman is androgynous, as in depending on one's interpretation the hero could either be a man or woman?
"Not A Word...!"
Que raro un juego que no conozco ahora es mi pregunta es ¿stars wars? ¿rolling Turner ? ¿robocop? No es cierto son muy extraños nunca haya visito bueno siempre que pasan una joya en juegos de su época.
Oh wow this looks trash. I'm gonna download it right away!!
What did you expect from a Korean developer that has the name of a Muslim sacred book?
良いな~こーゆーゲーム。
シュール過ぎる
this is Korea game
Looks like a crap version of robo cop
lol, holy shit, this is a South Korean rip off of NES Rush'n Attack by Konami.
Looks great i think it could have worked as a terminator game after a few tweaks.
Terminator?! It doesn't even work as a Spark Man game 😆
It just reminded me of The Terminator on Sega CD.
bad plagiat of "rolling thunder" 🤣🤣
