The P500 is slightly bigger than a quad but so much more comfortable, safer and practical for carrying a passenger and gear. It was a great machine and I'd buy another one tomorrow 👍
I am looking at one of these, I like the width, firs in a smaller pickup box but thinking it seems a bit under powered. When you are in the back country, at times, you need the ooomph to pull you through an obstacle. Great vid. Cheers.
They are a little under powered and I would prefer a 700cc+ twin piston engine if I had a choice. However, I can live with the smaller engine for my type of riding. Thanks for the comment!
I am running 25" Bighorns on my P500..I like them and they work really well and go where you aim them, and Greg is right, i find myself looking for the extra gear some times. But all and all it does what i got it for, Work around the camp lot and some trail riding with the wife.
Hi Chuck, When Honda appoints me as head UTV design engineer, I'll fix all the wants on the P500 first ;) Bigger engine, front diff lock and better top end speed. They are a great machine for the price and it suits my driving style very well. Thanks for commenting!
Oh!, i am not complaining at all. I like my P500 alot. I like what you have done to your and it works for you. I ordered the wireless remote too(still waiting after 6 week). i was just saying i look for the extra gear sometimes when i am not paying attention..lol. i also build a box for the back of my as well. Out here in Atlantic Canada, (maritime's) and i am sure you know how it is that we have to be ready for whatever happens :P (weather wise).
I recognize the first trail I think......west side of the area that comes out at the road or wellhead. Where is the creek in the second half though? Up the power line somewhere?
Do you think with a front diff lock you would of gotten through that??? Of coarse something like a Maxxis bighorn 2.0 26” tires would made a huge difference too. That mud didn’t look that deep hard to tell in the video. It did look super thick and sticky though. Supposedly there’s a front diff lock coming out this year for the P5
I think with a diff lock I would have been deeper into the muck but not through it. To rip through this stuff you need insane power (Ostacruiser on RUclips shows the technique). I know people on the Honda SXS forums mentioned a 3rd party who was designing an aftermarket diff lock but I hope Honda themselves put them in the 2018/2019 P500s!
+The Emporium we thought about a side by side, I got a throttle extension to help with discomfort,, I have been riding 4 wheelers for many years,,, we like ours,,,,,
I considered buying a Pioneer 500 recently myself, until I test drove one. I'm not a huge power junkie but the Pioneer has to be the slowest, most underpowered off-road machine I have ever driven. 28 hp for a machine weighing 900 lbs isn't a very good power to weight ratio. Heck, I owned a Honda Recon before and it would run circles around a Pioneer 500 and its basically the cheapest atv you can buy. I like the idea of the 50" Pioneer and the paddle shifters are a great idea but Honda has to give this machine more power to really make it a capable ride. The one instance where it got stuck was because it just doesn't have enough power to get through mud. The poor ground clearance with the tiny 24" stock tires doesn't help either. The 700 engine from the Rincon and in the Pioneer 700 would be an improvement but its underpowered too. The 700cc single from the 700xx has a lot more power and would be a great choice for the 50" Pioneer. Or a scaled down version of the Pioneer 1000 twin in the 800cc range and about 55-60 hp would be great too. Its a good platform to build a multipurpose machine but the outdated Foreman 500 engine can't be the only choice. Its not even powerful enough for the Foreman, let alone a machine weighing 250 lbs more.
Lots of Bears there too We hunt in there all the time , Mulies`s everywhere , There`s some nicer trails with lakes north of Westlock way closer to Edmonton I live in Westlock .
I'm always struggling to find closer places to camp out and ride. It seems everything is 2+ hours away :) I live about 45 minutes South East of Westlock. Mulies seem to live in pockets as far as I can tell - I have a mulie buck tag in 338 this year. I've only ever seen one mulie buck in the last 5 years - :D wish me luck and then some! Do you ride in Vega as well during the summer?
+The Emporium Do you know long island lk just north of dapp store follow the Rd into the lake go past the rodeo grds. turn left camping all thru there on the end is the sandy knob I have vids of the in my channel same name ,Oh god there's miles all over here got a heard of elk just north of Busby ,I haven't been to Vega in while heard they took ferry out ,I live in trl.prk. Westlock I have to fix an axle on my argo got buggered knees back hurts now .
Dapp store is one of my favorite places! :) They sell everything and anything. Maybe I should pop up there sometime and you can show me the trails in the argo. I'd love to share the video on both channels. Shoot me an email and we can set something up! I subscribed and will check out your videos for sure!
+The Emporium I'll find the vid and send it the argo ride wasn't the best in that vid it was a test drive no camera mount either but you can see what the area is like the area is only for machines.
+The Emporium Thanks for subbing ,I would love to get out on the argo again soon I'm going thru a issue with my legs old injuries are kicking my ass can barely walk anymore ,But them trails go on for miles lakes and camping in the bush hunting all thru there .
Hi Greg Rowe - Sorry I can't reply directly but you have reply restricted - and I hope you check back for my comment. I truly believe you should be a Honda designer! Everything you said is utterly true - so true it's painful. I hate the machine is capped @ 64 kmph - I hate the crappy 24" tires - I dislike the underpowered engine. I wish Honda had taken more of a risk and made a 90 kmph machine with 28" tires and a torquey 850cc motor in the same 50" chassis. I LOVE the form factor! It's small and agile, has the big bed on the back and the riding position for me is perfect. If I won the lottery I'd modify my P500 to exactly those specifications and ask you to test it :) (oh and I would make the front diff locking / and add an option to auto shift for the gears). Great comment thanks for taking the time for a well thought out response.
Hi, yes - I upgraded to some 25" tires recently - Nothing special just some take off's from a can-am quad. I really think I would like some 26" for the final size. Maybe next year :)
Hi Adam, Vega, Alberta - NW of Edmonton. People call the area Vega but it's full name is Timeu Creek OHV Recreation Area. It's a short ride across the river via ferry in the summer months. In winter you have to drive around via Fort Assiniboine. Hope that helps.
I'm from England but live in Alberta Canada now. Funny, Canada reminds me of Russia! Lol Thanks for commenting :) And everyone, please check out Survival Russia's channel its awesome! ruclips.net/user/Moscowprepper
If you get stuck and 1 wheel is not turning, does the Pioneer 500 have the common Honda front diff where you just ride the brakes a little and it adds more power to the stuck wheel? ruclips.net/video/WxzsQ9TO6dM/видео.html.
That works if you don't have a 475cc engine :D - I could power through some stuff with my old Rzr but with the muskeg I end up sunk to the axles if I'm not careful. The remote I added to the winch is a great for this. SO glad I spend $20 on that! Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the tip but its synthetic - I won't use a steel cable for that exact reason. Take a look at this explaining it ruclips.net/video/A9Fi6Wao_00/видео.html Thanks for watching!
What river was that @ 8:31?
Hmm - not sure, but I know if feeds into the Athabasca. The area is Timeu Creek OHV Recreation Area 👍
Nice video! I had a Honda four wheeler and was considering the Pioneer 500 but life got in the way. I miss it.
The P500 is slightly bigger than a quad but so much more comfortable, safer and practical for carrying a passenger and gear. It was a great machine and I'd buy another one tomorrow 👍
Does it seem that the ATV quads in this video outperform the Pioneer 500?
Indeed they do - more power, lighter and better tires. However, the P500 is more comfortable, can carry gear and is slightly cheaper than the quads.
I am looking at one of these, I like the width, firs in a smaller pickup box but thinking it seems a bit under powered. When you are in the back country, at times, you need the ooomph to pull you through an obstacle. Great vid. Cheers.

I can agree, not out to win races, just want to power through some things. Thanks for your video and time. Cheers. BC
Is the Honda noisier than a quad bike. Thanks for posting.
I'd say its pretty quiet. If you full throttle it it can get loud however.
When you said that you brought the most important thing, I thought that were going to reach for a six pack of beer. Great video.
The beer is a given ;) Thanks for commenting!

Great ride along. Thanks for taking the time to put it together.
Hey thanks for commenting and providing a great forum for Honda owners to get involved in! :)
I recognize the first trail I think......west side of the area that comes out at the road or wellhead. Where is the creek in the second half though? Up the power line somewhere?
Hi Taps - That place is a maze! I navigate via the power lines as a bearing but I've had to use my GPS at times. Great riding however!

stock tires??,,,,,,,oh,,love the videos, ,, I bought a set of LED rear lights and put them in the same place after watching your older video
Yes - stock tires - but on part 2 I have 25"x12x8 & 10 on - so a little better. How do you like the lights?
my 2015 can am outlander max xt 1000 2up is only 46 inches wide
Yup but thats a quad - I'm used to the comfort of a side by side now and it would be tough to go back to quading but a good point to note!
+The Emporium we thought about a side by side, I got a throttle extension to help with discomfort,, I have been riding 4 wheelers for many years,,, we like ours,,,,,
You should get the yamaha wolverine
Yea - no. Much longer than the P500 and I like the utility style.
Yamaha can keep their CVT's lol
After driving both - I prefer the gears over CVT - engine braking & hill descents are awesome with the Honda transmission.
Ok

I use a Marmot Limestone tent i love it and the full rain fly's.
I love Marmot gear - they make great tents and sleeping bags.

Maybe - the 2018 model will have some more of those features! We will have to wait and see! Thanks for commenting.
Any tire upgrade coming soon? Great vid.
Nevermind.... helps if i watch all your vids first.... lol

Great video, keep up the great work.
Thanks for the encouragement! It really makes a difference to know people like the videos :)
Looks like a fun camp and ride
Certainly is - just great to be outside and enjoying the fresh air :)
where is this ?

love the lights,, thanks for the idea
Anytime! Thanks for watching :)

+The Emporium Or is that 410 --22 plug bore
Hello. You sound British if i am not mistaken :) Cable ferry.... That reminds me of Sweden. actually, that whole area reminds me of Sweden.

ruclips.net/video/WxzsQ9TO6dM/видео.html.
Yea - I've tried that and it should work as you are applying resistance to the turning wheel but it's not effective I'm afraid :(
When you got stuck you should have kicked up a gear and floored it
That works if you don't have a 475cc engine :D - I could power through some stuff with my old Rzr but with the muskeg I end up sunk to the axles if I'm not careful. The remote I added to the winch is a great for this. SO glad I spend $20 on that! Thanks for the comment!
Needs more Cup a Soup.
I love Cup a Soup - I use another one here ruclips.net/video/3l4T-VNlzi8/видео.html :) Tomato and chicken noodle are my favourite.
certainly muddy hope you made some good pies!, ha ha
Mud pies and worms for supper! :D
put a jacket or something over that cable, if it breaks you will have no teeth
over what cable?
Thanks for the tip but its synthetic - I won't use a steel cable for that exact reason. Take a look at this explaining it ruclips.net/video/A9Fi6Wao_00/видео.html Thanks for watching!
