There might be a cultural situation going on. They currently share a house with wife’s sister and her husband. Husband is hoping to break ties with them and move to a little cottage on his parent’s ranch, but wife isn’t wanting that. Is this a Hispanic or Latino couple, who each want to live with family, expecting them to help out ‘because they are family’? He’s going to have a difficult time when he tells his wife they have to sell the car, sell their share of the house, move to their own place, and take care of themselves.
Hispanics from what I’ve experienced usually have multiple generations living under one roof. For lower income families this can be beneficial when it comes to providing for childcare and other help with day to day activities.... but that’s only if the living situation is mutualistic.

His wife is living with her older sister. Don't think she will be on board. I lived with my parents for two months when we moved back. It was harder on my wife than on me. I had no problems living with my parents. My wife was dying. It is harder on him than his wife. She will not agree to any of it. She might tell him if he wants to clean this up, get a second job.

Dave is right! I just sold my new 2020 Toyota Corolla hybrid to carmax and they bought it for almost the worth of the car. I only had to cover $1400 out of packet. Good thing is, I work from home and my job is a 10 minute walk. 😊 which was also a factor in selling my car.
@@saulgoodman2018 I took it as he literally walks out of his house to his job location. I work in a high rise building 30 minutes walking from home and a 7 minute drive. And when the car I drive broke down, I had to walk to work (Or Uber...). Many people have the option of working from home, but not all professions.

Renting isn't really as bad as people make it it out to be. Yes: building up equity in a home is nice but I like that if something breaks I call someone and the apartment complex I rent from sends someone out to fix it (often in less than 24 hours).
Better solution is just to fix the outflow issues. Taking on extra daycare costs, and taking the wife away from the kids just for the privilege of paying more taxes is a much less efficient solution. If they get rid of the stupid car and mortgage they should be fine.
These are the kind of call I use to listen to Dave do all the time it's like a flashback, digging into how you can help one person with the lines items in their budget. In six months this guy could be doing great, if he listens to Dave's advice but my guess is he gets talked into staying in the house and he won't sell the car and he will be right where he is now in six months.

renting is only better if you already have high debt and plan on moving around a lot. If you're committed to one place and have low debt a mortgage is a better option and much cheaper (at least for me)

True. Even when I was making $100K I thought a $20K used truck was a huge purchase. That's still the most I've ever spent on a vehicle.
