Sorry for your loss. I lost my 15 year old Elkhound (our second Elkhound) at the end of last summer (2023). My wife wanted to take a break from having a dog, and that lasted a few months. She acquiesced in October 23, and said that we could get a smaller dog. The rescues proved ridiculously difficult to deal with, and one day after a 45 minute long interview where we both had to be present and we didn't get the dog, my wife asked how long it would take me to get another Elkhound. I'm well connected in the Elkhound community, so I told her about an hour. She said go for it, and In an hour I had two responses for Elkhounds that were available. We received our 9 month old just before Thanksgiving last year. At this point we have a 50 pound puppy (almost two years old) that is just about beginning to be a reasonable dog. Elkhounds are monsters until about three years of age. We are making progress though. Then again, I left his harness on when I crated him this morning, so that It would be easier for my kids to walk him when they got up. When my daughter came down stairs his harness was in peaces in his crate! I don't recommend Elkhounds to anyone, but I would hate to be without one. Cheers, Chris
