- Pragya Tank shares a personal story of she dealt with schizophrenia in her family. From her experience and learning she dwells on the societal changes necessary to ensure a more humane environment for people with mental health problems. Trying to create a positive impact on the society, Pragya is currently
working as a Fellow with the Wellness Center of Vidya Bhawan which takes care of psychological well-being of it's students and staff. She believes in the theory of social learning and hence, wants to unfurl the deeper understanding of empathy through her actions while working with children. This being one of the reasons for choosing psychology for graduation, the other one was trying to understand and evaluate different reactions to various human behaviours. Her interest in psychology grew further when she witnessed Schizophrenia closely which taught her the value of empathy, perseverance and grit. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
To be honest, I'm feeling that someone has shared my story.. I can feel each and every word you said .
I hope whosoever is going through this, recovers and heals soon. Also, I pray that you stay strong and healthy, physically and mentally.
I can feel the pain my dad is suffering since more than 30 years. I am 24 whenever i talk abt this to my frnd they make distance from me but not to worry i am enough strong to handle this and u should also (the person who is reading comment)
I hope your father comes out from it as soon as possible, Rajesh. Keep yourself hydrated with taking out time for yourself everyday, hang out or talk to ones who are there for you, listen to your father, make sure he understands that you understand him. I know things are hard, but it doesn't define our entire life, remember that. :)
My dad is also suffering from schizophrenia for the last 14 years . He thinks he is chosen by god for a special purpose. According to him god talks to him. His way of thinking has gotten religious . My mom died 2 months ago . Now its just me and him. But dad believes mom has become a devi and he'll make me meet her sometime. I know these are his
delusions. My relatives are there with me. And we're going to start his treatment soon.
@@harshshrivastav7216 could you please tell me where you are planning to treat him ? I have been researching the good hospitals in North region of India which treat pschizophrenia
@@harshshrivastav7216 I can totally understand. These thoughts do come in when they are suffering from a psychotic illness. When they are in that zone, try asking them questions like, 'what does God want you to do', 'what do you want to do now', allow them to release it may be thrashing th pillow, writing and tearing the pages. These methods are used in therapies and allow the person to firsr build the trust with you/ outer world, and to release the pain in some degree.
Msg me ur no may b I could try helping
These tedtalks are amazing, shedding light on some of the most stigmatized issues of our world, "Mental Illnesses". Going through such a debilitating illness and unimaginable psychotic pain is the most painful thing to bear. Shame on the people who demean and label people with these illnesses.
This is mine story too. I feel pitty for my father that he has to live with a schizophrennic partner for his lifetime. It is not easy at all. My mother had suspicion on him andMy mother's family used to blame on him for everything
Yes this society should respect the person facing this and it's whole family to help someone to survive. It need lot of courage to treat these patients. So a change of attitude required to deal this, other wise this whole society will be ashamed to destroy these courageous efforts.
In my opinion, the Indian education needs to upgrade the psychological content from high school. In North America, we are taught the psychological disorders in high school.
Nice explanation. It helped me to prepare my test,
Hello Arsh, I am glad to hear that it helped you in some way. But, I also feel, more than just having the content in books, it's equally important to lay emphasis on promoting empathy. That's the most required skill for every individual/ citizen right now, yet is something that's paid such less attention.
Salute you mam! Thats Amazing of you to share ur story..inspired me .gave me a ray of hope..my brother has been suffering from it for 12yrs . But he is diagnosed just 4 days back..i knew howmuch it takes a troll on the family as well.
It does. I hope your brother, you and your family stay grounded and patient throughout the process. So, is your brother on medication now?

Super proud, Pragya :)
Tejas Mehta thank you! :)
I am so touched. I have seen Schizophrenia very closely. My brother had 1st episode in 2007 and I still get goosebumps when i remember. However he had improved a lot. I would like to know about your Mother. How is she doing now? Did she get any relapses or she is on any medication? Thank you.
Same story ...my mom dad both are suffering from schizophrenia.. society doesn't accept it as it should be..
How are you dealing with both parents having it?? It's very hard dealing with one person with this illness. You have two to deal with!!
I hate income inequality, people really can’t seek help nor can they shift places. Please fight capitalism.
Can u plz help me..my brother is suffering from this...
“California End of Life Act”!
My sister is suffering with same
Yes anti psychotic drugs work but is there any alternative
Yes, there are alternatives. All alternative healing areas that work around mind and energy. Therapies to be precise. :)
I am suffering from it.
May you come out of from it soon. Please take care.
Hope you recover and heal soon. Stay strong and find amazing ways to keep yourself engaged. :)
@@pragyatank723 Most of my time, negative thoughts come to mind. Because of this, it may be difficult to stay normal. I think I can finish it. I now make many changes in my life; Maybe I would like to bring it in for a better change. Thank you so much for responding.
@@fahimrahman3914 Yes, negative thoughts have a great effect on our wellness. Do things that you always wanted to do, try a new skill, keep yourself engaged and say this to yourself everyday whenever you feel low- Even though, I feel I am going through a hard phase and negativity in life, but, I love myself and accept the way I am'
This is how you will condition your subconcsious mind to believe that you love yourself, and if you practice this on an everyday basis, you will notice the difference after few weeks.
I believe that if I can exclude all my negative thoughts, I will be able to recover from it. It might be important for me to be mentally strong. I must definitely try my best to get rid of it. I think that mental issues may have something to do with physical well-being. Maybe to reduce it I always have to try to make sure I am physically fit. Trying to reduce the anger. I think our society is not that helpful to us. Yet I think none of us should ever stop. By the way, I am extremely happy to be with you. Please tell me what your current situation is ... do you feel better now ...
Hi Pragya, can you help someone who needs 24 hour residential care with who can work there and live entire life any good care giver centres. Kindly suggest
I am from A.P. my sister is suffering from schizophrenia. she is not properly responding for the treatment. she always sit alone laughing to her self. she is not even responding to my words and when ever I try to talk to her she irritates and ask me to leave her. but she loves me a lot. any suggestions regarding the data of hospitals which provide good treatment is appreciated. I welcome any guidance or tips regarding the care that I need to provide to her which will help her recovery. thank you.
It's a modern day scam rubber stamped by law enforcement for big pharma med dumping based on a super rare condition.
Research targeted individuals; find ways to deal with the magnetic liquid in your body and, because of v2k, think in another voice so they can't fake your voice to mess with your finances or personal life.
Ask why the police aren't dealing with the drones and why no one in authority is taking this seriously.
Read the work done by Doctor J Abrahm Hoffer. He treated schizophrenic patients with high doses of Niacin. May be there you could find some help. Continue her with antipsychotic medication. If she doesn't take medicines, try injectables form of medicines. Develop insight of this situation within her self as soon as possible because when we know something is not right, we try to rectify that as in her case, she is not aware of her condition. Do not tell her that there is something wrong, let that develop it by itself. Do not leave her alone please.
And one more thing, NIMHANS Bangalore is really good hospital for mental health. Just in case you don't know about it.
Hi Siva, I pray and hope that she recovers soon. Stay strong, take out time for yourself too. And as Dhananjay has mentioned, NIMHANS is good, and there's Schizophrenia foundation in Chennai too. Apart from that, just be there for her, and let her believe that you understand her. That's the utmost need of her, and when she gains that faith in you, she will feel empowered. Listen to her, accept her condition, I know it's very tough, but do it. That will be helpful for her, but for you too.
Also Sivw, figure out through talking to her, what she loves doing. Create a safe environment for her where she feel loved and mattered. Medication alone doesn't treat everything, emotional and mental support does.

Pragya tank mam can I talk to u
Hi Bhupinder, yes tell me?
Telepathy not schizophrenia.
I have lately been smelling smoke. Not all the time but often and I don't know why. Does anyone one have..... maybe an answer?
It could be thyroid, talk to your doctor.
Yes, please consult a doctor. It could be a triggered response to some stimuli.
