I spend 90% of November animating and putting together this animatic in TVPaint. I've always wanted to do an animatic to this song bc it's so powerfull and I love TLK (and lions in general) 🦁
Nala as a character has much more potential rather than being the love interest - I feel like she's been robbed ;;
Hardest thing to work with was the multi-plane cameras.... not bc it's hard to set up but to make everything flow smoothly and coherent was such a drag (especially if you want fancy camera movements) ;; It was also hard to determine the little FX keys in the timeline like ???....
I did my best with those camera movements and I know it's not perfect but its good enough for me.
At least I've learned so much about TVPaint!
The best thing to work on was the running shot - usually you don't animate this much in an animatic but I was having so much fun and zero self control.
Also I want to add that I traced 90% of some faces from TLK screenshots. I did it not only to keep the character on-model but also to make my work 10 times faster lol
The rest is me trying to hit the style.

I love how you can tell Sarafina and Sarabi from their eye color even with everything monochrome.
This is stunning, i really wish the TLK fandom could do more of this. Heck, we have the chance to be as animation-driven as the Warriors fandom!
Yeah i hoped TLK fandom had make more fan animatic especially i hated how they weren't so active 😭😭😭

The lioness walking beside Nala in solidarity as she leaves to save their home is such a powerful visual. In a land decimated by a tyrant’s madness and his army’s insatiable greed, the only support the lioness have is each other and they’re determined to protect their own. Excellent work ❤😊
I think its more like they made it look like they were going out for a hunt so that the hyenas wouldn't tip scar off. It's a touching scene. They probably told scar she died during the hunt when she didn't come back so he wouldn't send them out looking for her.
I know this was only uploaded a couple days ago, but it is a crime that this only has five hundred views. You captured the emotion of the song perfectly, and I honestly feel like I'm watching an official deleted scene from the movie when I watch this. Despite this not being a full-on animation, you gave the characters so much expression and power in the way they move. You're a wonderful animator, and I look forward to seeing more from you!
This is great. I wish this was a scene from the movie. It would have been so great if Nala had her own power ballade.

This song is my favorite out of all the parts of the musical. I feel like Nala and the Lionesses deserve more screen time than what they actually got.
I can feel their love for each other and their support for Nala's decisions from your animated art into my bones.
They should've thought about the "Shadow Land" song, where the lionesses are just victims desperate for a change when they make the live action, instead of just making them look like ignorant subjects that let the tyrant and his minions take over the pride without showing a single emotion about it.
I can't wait to watch the finished pieces! Actually, I can wait for however many years it takes.😂
Gosh this is so moving! Anything The Lion King related - especially Broadway - makes me so emotional. I also love that you started off with cub Nala going back to the place where she last saw Simba. Wonderful attention to detail!
This is amazing! From the beginning of the video, with little Nala, to the ending. And the moment with the tree and the fallen leaf is chilling. And when the lionesses cover and run next to Nala, it is mesmerizing and gives the feeling that it was done by a master.

I saw this animatic recently and I have to say, I was blown away! The amount of work put into this, from the on model characters, the scenery, to the flowing movement of the imagery really wowed me and left me in awe. As a fan of TLK and an artist myself, this animatic of Shadowland is very inspiring and motivating to see!

This was really well-made. A lot of the cinematography did a great job at showcasing Nala's inner struggle as she had to leave her home to find better lands. Also I agree with you on her character, it's a shame that she often gets sidelined a lot compared to the rest of her family.
I must say, I have been wanting to do an animatic of this bit for years, and I've never managed to find the time. There's no way it would ever compare though, this is SO lovely, so on model, and it's a short film within itself. I never pictured them running from the hyenas like this, that is such an amazing addition. I can't compliment this enough. Stellar animatic.
I watched this yesterday and thought about it for the rest of the day, this is SO WELL MADE. I love the emotions in their expressions and the composition of it all is just perfect. Outstanding work!!
This is breathtaking! Shadowland has always been my favorite TLK song and you did it so much justice with this animatic, I could see this as part of the movie

You know, they did The Morning Report for a re-released version of the 1994 film (it's not on current releases). I would have loved to have seen Shadowland done for the film in the same way. This presents a very nice 'what if', even if it's not finished. You have done good.

Love it! That last but especially. Would love to see it completed when, if ever possible. And yeah, TVPaint’s multi plane camera and FX view are…something. Not bad just, weirdly lacking in comparison to other programs. Have a bunch of tutorials saved just for the multi plane camera alone.

Not only Nala they shadow the lionesses in general, especially sarabi they could have a song about her since she lost her whole family. I understand that Nala won't tolerate scar's tyranny but that doesn't mean the other lionesses didn't have a choice, they just didn't want to leave their home . I like Nala but I love all the lionesses without knowing their personality or names, which in my theory 3 of them are sarabi's sisters. Since sarabi knew scar/taka from a young age, she tried to help him let's say, she couldn't leave not on the lands she had her family.

I holeheartedly belive that, this song was the oportunity for the 2019 lion king to be the movie it needed to be, a better animation with better expressions and THIS song, this, because 90% of people that know the lion king dont know this songs exist and the significance of it, imagine showing a new generation of fans this song, the animation and the beauty of its words...but, we got a new beyonce song, so :)

Whenever you happen to pick up on working on the rest of this animation, I know I’ll be waiting. I flock to any works that are able to capture that lion king aesthetic. I know I'm not in any position to say this because you made it for free, taking into account that it is a lot of hard work but... Could you please consider it to finish it? This work it's amazing and you're right Nala has a lot of potential that the franchise didn't use it properly. This storyboard feels powerful and far more interesting than the original version of TLK.
