  • Ahh the good old New Syd in Hobart! (Best pub in town!)
It's been two years since I played my first ever gig there, which I only agreed to after a lot of arm twisting by a few of the regulars, so it's nice to come back again this year for the Dark Mofo festival.
This was a very fun night, and the four hours passed a lot quicker than I thought they would to be honest! Good fun, great crowd, great pub, great night!
Four hours is actually a stressful amount of time to keep playing for, so this isn't something I want to do every day!
Whilst I’m a little achy this morning, it’s mainly the mental strain that takes its toll. You kinda want to keep a flow going through the set, but it’s sooooo easy to accidentally patch yourself into a hole from which it’s difficult to return. (Yup, done that before, more than once!)
Sometimes you kinda need to push yourself out of you comfort zone, and then fail horribly. Luckily this was one of those days where the major failures weren’t forthcoming!
Big thanks to Jamin, Emily and Henry for helping out with this one! Big thanks to everyone who came along in support!
    Hope everyone enjoys the result!

    • @robthebloke
      @robthebloke  5 дней назад

Downloading VCV rack isn’t a bad starting point. It’s a free download, and whilst there are some modules that you have to pay for, there are many modules that are available for free (eg all of the instruo modules!!)
What’s exactly the right setup for you is very subjective, so I’ve put a load of recommendations in the following link (mostly in the cheap -> mid range)
      modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2617414#top
The top row is a cost-effective way to get a bassline, melody and kick. It’s not the best option, just an option (i’ll list a few alternatives below)
The second row are the only other Behringer modules I’d recommend (they’re pretty cheap!). The first 3 are no brainers, the others are maybes.
The 3rd and 4th rows are modules that are in the cheap -> midrange bracket (roughly grouped by type). I’m not saying you need all of them! Just a list of of modules that have a high price/performance ratio ;)
The bottom two rows are a few sequencer options (I’m afraid they don’t come cheap!). The Korg SQ-64 is probably the way to go initially!
Case wise, just get the Behringer eurorack go case (Avoid the Behringer 104hp skiff, a lot of modules won’t fit it!). It’s the best value case by a big margin! (You might be imagining a smaller setup initially, however trust me, modular synths have a habit of magically growing over time!)
Sequencer wise, just get the Korg sq-64. It can sequence 8 drum tracks, and 3 melodic voices; which means you’ve got more than enough spare sequencing headroom to add more drums and synths in the future. You can always complement it with an additional sequencer or arpeggiator module at a later date (eg metropolix or 2hp arp)
Get a frap tools 333. It can duplicate signals, mix signals, attenuate them, and it’s also a damned good precision adder (so you can accurately sum pitch voltages from the SQ-64 to transpose sequences etc). When you are starting from nothing, that module is a no brainer!
The classic Roland system 100 set (by Behringer) would be the 112, 121, 130, 140 and 150. Those modules are by no means perfect, but they are really good value, and are absolutely superb to learn on. When you’re starting out, having two identical VCO’s, VCF’s, LFO’s, envelopes and VCA’s, gives you the ability to cross modulate everything in some crazy stereo voice, or just have two simple voices, one for bassline, and one for melody.
I’d probably suggest maybe skipping on the 130, and getting the four-play (intellijel quad vca clone) instead. It’s just a much more useful module.
The 140 and 150 are great learning tools, but a bit meh long term. Swapping them for the chaos, abacus, and quad lfo; would be a huge upgrade in terms of patching potential long term, but may be slightly more confusing short term. Honestly, I’d probably get all 5 eventually ;)
The 121 dual filter is not the greatest sounding filter ever made (and it doesn’t have any resonance control via CV), however it is extremely useful, extremely versatile, and super cheap. I’d start with that, then add a few more at a later date ;)
Doepfer make some great 4hp filters (the 2144 is basically an improved Moog ladder filter - super clean!). After later audio make a few decently priced ones as well. Filters are also really really useful for running drums through, so don’t be too worried about having too many ;)
The 112 dual VCO is great for the money. I’d strongly recommend checking the calibration though! Calibration just needs a guitar tuner and a small electrical screwdriver, process documented here: www.modwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=261278
The only downside to the 112, is that you can only get one waveform at a time. If money was no object, I’d probably get a pair of intellijel dixies instead (6 waveforms including sub oscillator = “very phat!”). But yeah, the 112 is great value as a starting point - then id probably add a make noise sto or instruo TSL at a later date (unleash some wavefolding!).
Dont make the mistake of filling your case with oscillators. Keeping two oscillators in tune takes a bit of practice. Keeping three in tune is a lot more work. After that the workload increase becomes exponential. Loads of filters, yes, loads of oscillators, no!
By and large I don’t recommend the Behringer vintage clones (arp 2500, system 55). They’re cheap, but they also retain all of the design flaws and quirks of the original 1970’s modules. A few of the system 100 modules are kinda worth it, but not all of them.
If you’re after something digital, the Behringer victor or brains may appeal to you. The 1047 filter is ok. But that’s about all I recommend from Behringer tbh.
For headphone output, get the make noise XOH. Having a simple stereo mixer on the output is awesome (for dry/wet mixes, or just as a mixer!). Avoid the Behringer system 100 one! There are cheaper modules out there, but the XOH is the one you actually want.
Chances are you’ll probably want an additional mixer before your FX at some point. The intellijel mixup is dead cheap, and is a great starting point. 2 mono channels, 2 stereo, with 3 mute switches.
Finally I’ve added the kickain. Kick, bassline, melody: those are the 3 basics you need for a big smile! The kickain module is a bit crazy: it has a stereo input / output, which can add reverb and side chaining into your mix. A tiny amount of side chaining makes everything sound good! You would definitely want to add a clockable delay at some point though (if a delay module lacks a clock input, don’t buy it).
A more expensive alternative to the kickain, would be an endorphines ghost and a tiptop BD909. You would however have a complete FX chain with a tonne of CV modulation possibilities. It’s not the cheapest option, but it is actually the best value (and by far the best sounding).
      1. Don’t be in a rush to fill the rest of the case. If you can’t keep two oscillators in tune, having five isn’t going to help you! (That’s why I’d suggest starting with a kick only, and add a high hat / snare later)
      2. If you are struggling to decide between module A or B, the one with more inputs and outputs is probably the most fun. (Eg the abacus vs the 140)
      3. The cheapest modules often end up being the most expensive. If a filter only has one FM input, you’ll end up needing an extra mixer and a few patch cables, so that filter that was $5 more expensive, but had three FM inputs, all with attenuators; was actually the cheaper option! (The modules I’ve listed in rows 3 and 4, offer far better value for money than the Behringer modules that are NOT listed in rows 1 and 2).
      4. You tend to use more long cables than short cables. 3 packs of long cables, 2 medium, and 1 short - try to stick to that ratio!
      5. RUclips gear reviewers never list the downsides to a module. Asking for opinions in modulargrid or modwiggler forums is likely to stop you making a purchasing mistake ;)
There are also semi modular options. The Behringer crave, edge, and Model 15, are ethically dubious, but pretty good (if you can cope with the form factor). The original Moog versions cost more, but are better quality. The Behringer arp 2600 clone is perfect for the classroom (but also awkwardly big). Other than that, I’d probably pass on all the other Behringer semi modular gear.
The intellijel atlantix (plus expander) is the gold standard for semi modular. The Arturia mini brute 2/2s and drum brutes aren’t bad.
Outside of eurorack and modular, there are always groove boxes (eg novation circuit tracks); but in the wrong person to ask about those ;)

      @robthebloke  3 месяца назад +12

Nope. I’m just here. It’s an annoying reality of Spotify vs RUclips. Here is an uninterrupted 4 hour set, that anyone can watch. If I released it on Spotify, this video would have ads every 3 to 4 minutes.
Money wise, I have ads enabled at the start and end, and that’s it. That doesn’t make any financial sense for me at all, but that’s not really the point. I don’t make tracks. Im not here to make money off this. The only reason this channel ever existed was a way for me to review my flaws, so I could improve for my next live gig. Suddenly people started liking it, and that was never the plan
I have literally never advertised this channel. I’ve never done the like comment subscribe shite. Im not interested in that.
Suddenly things kicked off, and well, that has had opened a load of doors for me. I will only sign to a music distributor IF, AND ONLY IF, they understand that my subscribers take a precedence over me.
I will earn about $1 per 1000 views on this video. If I was to release it to spotify, I’d get about $0.03 per 1000 views, and piss off everyone who has hit that subscribe button.
I am who I am. What I do is just what I do. I’m not here to make money. I’m just here unexpectedly, and I’m fortunate as fuck to be in this position.
This channel is owned by the people who’ve given me support. That will never change!!
