      Hahaha, I actually have a massive amount of respect for a good DJ!! I’m not going to lie, I wouldn’t be able to do what they do!
      I have a fairly small but dedicated fan base when I play live over here, and I’d say about 80% of them are DJs!
      I think the funniest thing about playing live is that some people get a little confused as to what it is I’m doing (usually they just think I’m a pretty terrible DJ to be honest!).
      It’s quite funny sometimes when you’re on stage, and you can see someone looking very confused - you’ll then see DJ go up and explain it to them!
      Hilariously some people still don’t quite ‘get’ it. The funniest is when people request me to play certain tracks!

      If you want to play around with this stuff, you can download VCV rack for free, and have a pretty decent emulation of a similar system.

      I usually just mult the final mix, with one copy sent to the Erica synths pico out (for my headphones). Another copy is sent to one of the instruo cuir modules (at gigs, I use the TRS outputs direct into the PA). For RUclips I just run the headphone out from cuir direct into camera.
      For quadraphonic gigs, the final mixer is the Aeolus by Shakmat. That runs through the quad mid side, then out of both cuirs. The mono sum out is sent to the pico out for monitoring through headphones
      The camera is just a zoom q2n

    OK @12:33 in I had to switch tabs back to see what I'd left on. Ok, fair play, fair play, I'm in!! Watched a few of your videos as wanted to pick up one of those moogs you use. Now getting recommended your vids in my feed, this has got to be my favourite so far.
    Out of interest if I were to pick up one those moogs which one would you reccomend? I'm leaning towards the subharmonicon as seems it can be a decent mono synth if you need it, and does the extra polyrhythm biswacks ontop. But if you said the 32 would be a better starter/work horse mono I'm listening.

    • @robthebloke
      @robthebloke  9 месяцев назад

      When the subharmonicon was still in my rig, it was the synth that I always started my sets with. Big. Loud. Lovely.
      However, once that first track was done, that subh cannot be used. There is literally sod all chance of being able to drop it into a track and make it work, so it would never see that much use as a result. (The patching possibilities are also pretty limited with it tbh!)
      Of the 3, the dfam is by far the most fun; however to stop it sounding like a dfam takes a few additional modules and a lot of patience.
      The mother is the least exciting of the three, however it’s also the most versatile, so will end up seeing a hell of a lot more use in the long run!
      The mavis is a better synth than the mother by a massive margin! However, it’s tuning knob is an absolute nightmare to use live, which is why I’ve still got 2 in my rig!

    • @MouldySoul
      @MouldySoul 9 месяцев назад

      @@robthebloke Hmm a lot of things to consider price point wise. I design circuits and write audio dsp code as a profession and I do just fundamentally want a Sh101 with some more mod capabilities. It's either buy a moog or indulge in the synth making addiction. (There's a moodiness to the analog moogs I can't find anywhere else though.)
      Funnily enough I was in an interview with a the head of Moog as it was, Cyril, and had to admit to not owning a Moog.
      With your skills and knowledge now do you reckon we'd be able to cook up a little desktop modular in a similar form factor? Do you have or are on discord at all?

    • @robthebloke
      @robthebloke  9 месяцев назад

      @@MouldySoul if you want that Moog sound, buy a Moog.
      I’ve got a couple of vintage moogs from the 70’s/80’s. Those closest I’ve found to that sound is the frequency central DIY raging bull module (based on the Taurus). I cannot tell the difference between that filter and the real thing!
      Shove any CEM3340 oscillator into it, and you’re most of the way there….
      ….. however, in reality people don’t want that vintage Moog sound at all. To be honest, vintage moogs actually sound a little bit shit imho.
      The sub 25/37 is by far the best of the moogs (and it’s filter is VERY different to every other Moog - for the better imho!).
      All the old through hole moogs sound a little ratty. The newer surface mount ones have a much cleaner sound (the grandmother sounds a hell of a lot better than any vintage Moog - anyone who says otherwise is talking out of their arse!)
      However, the only reason I won’t be getting rid of my moogs anytime soon is down to their VCA. I can replicate any Moog with modules, apart from *that* VCA. They way that thing starts to clip and distort is what gives Moog its distinctive sound.
      I’m using the instruo vinca. There’s about a 2mm window on the slider that puts you into Moog territory. Outside of that window, it’s a little bit too angry for my liking (unless I want to go postal, in which case it’s ace!!)
      If you want to create tracks in ableton, buy a sub 37. If you want to go towards the modular route, buy a grandmother or matriarch. The DFAM is ace, but it requires quite a few extra modules to stop it sounding like a DFAM. The subharmonicon is the phatest Moog available, however there’s a reason that so many are available on eBay, it sounds great, but it isn’t a very good instrument to play. I’ve got two mother-32’s, but they’re a little bit flaccid sounding, when compared to a grandmother. The mavis is actually amazing - however it’s tiny tuning knob is a deal breaker for me.
      The reason I have 4 moogs in my live rig (and another 4 that I don’t use live!), is because if you want that Moog sound, youre going to have to bite the bullet and buy a Moog.

      @@matthewstephens972 yes I do, although it’s usually *slightly* different to what I do here…
      About 20% of my rig isn’t being used here, because those are the bits I use to mix down to 5.1 surround sound. Unfortunately I cheaped out slightly when buying my mixer, so I’ve got no way to record multiple tracks at once.
      That’s partially why I’ve been neglecting my RUclips channel for the past year or so.
      Honestly, I only had a handful of subscribers a couple of weeks ago, so this attention is all a bit new tbh! I’ve built up a small but dedicated following over here, but it’s never really crossed my mind that so many people on the other side of the world would be interested in what I do!
