  • Typically when I'm playing live, all my drums get filtered through MI Blades, which has its pros/cons. I've been seeing whether my main live backbone patch can be improved at all, and so for this one, I'm using QPAS as the drum filter, which leaves Blades free for a stereo synth voice (Saich into Blades, into Optomix as my vca).

I'm entering into my finals week rn and I've worn through all my ambient playlists. Throwing this on in the background is absolutely perfect for me. It sounds good, just in it's own right, but the gradual transitions means that it stays fresh without ever jarring me with changes as some of my playlists do. Super cool, keep it up!

Hey just found your channel. You sure know your stuff! Any advice on minimizing noise? I've got more noise than I'd like in my Eurorack system but yours sound clean. Again, great and inspiring work and keep sharing!

    • @robthebloke
      @robthebloke  7 месяцев назад +8

General advice - not so much. With noise, it’s pretty much down to which power supply(s) you’re using, how many digital modules you have (and their placement), and how you’re getting the output signal to your speakers (and whether that cable is running past anything digital)
A modular grid link, and some info about where you’re running you’re output signal to may help? (Eg into a mixer, usb audio interface, etc)
Are you getting noise in a recording, or can you also hear the noise through headphones? If you can’t hear noise through headphones, but you can in a recording, then balanced outputs may help? (By that depends on your recording set up)
For live performances through a PA, a balanced XLR or TRS output module is essential imho (with DI boxes being a close second). A long unbalanced line-out cable running past any DJ equipment usually picks up noise. I use the instruo cuir output, although in hindsight might have preferred the Joranalogue transmit instead.
Having said that, I record everything for RUclips though an unbalanced headphone socket, and just use a very short cable to minimise any chance of noise.
If the noise is coming from a module in your signal chain, that should be reasonably easy to diagnose. Start with zero patch cables, and just listen to the output. Slowly add in one module at a time until you hear the noise (Mutable instruments blades for example can generate noise, something I always have to be aware of)
Are you using any digital FX in your rack, or running the signal through FX pedals? If the noise comes and goes with the beat, the noise might just be digital clipping at the input of your FX (ie roll off your volume levels a little bit). Guitar pedals should be ok through something like the strymon AA1, otherwise you’re probably clipping the signal.
Depending on how big your case is, and how many power supply modules you have, and how many bus boards/cables; it may be worth keeping all your FX and final mix output modules on the same power rail, and organise the case to keep other digital models away from both the final signal chain, and the main power supply(s)
Without knowing anything about your setup I can’t really help much more than that I’m afraid!

What are the pros/cons of MI Blades in your experience?

    • @robthebloke
      @robthebloke  6 месяцев назад +1

      Pros:
+ no bass drop when cranking the resonance
      + wave folders built in
+ self oscillates, and tracks 1v/oct
+ does a damn good impression of a Buchla 259
+ versatile - can split into two mono filters if needed.
      Cons:
      - can be a little bit noisy at times
      - the output can get very hot!
      - you might not like the filter sound, but that’s subjective really! Don’t expect a buttery smooth 24db sound, it’s more acid house than blade runner!
The other stereo filter I use is the QPAS (and I guess the optimix would also qualify). The QPAS is the least versatile, doesn’t self oscillate, can’t be split into two filters, doesn’t track 1v/oct, and can be a bit wayward. However, I quite like it :)

how do you keep track of all that

    • @robthebloke
      @robthebloke  7 месяцев назад +7

Short answer: a lot of practice.
Long answer: the modules in my rig rarely change (maybe once every two years). Any cable with a right angled plug is part of my initial core patch (which just sets up the clocking, final mix and FX sections). Once you know that core patch inside out, you stop thinking about it. The only cables I care about are the ones with straight plugs, so that reduces the workload quite a lot!
I can sequence up to 4 synth tracks, and I always use them the same way: current root note, bassline, main melody, other. I always use the same outputs on the mixer (eg channel 1 for main melody, 2 for bassline, etc)
The kick drum, snare, and hi-hats are pre-patched (they’re pretty core, so muscle memory is needed!)
So I usually start with a clean slate. I can set up a basic drum pattern, and some FX, all without needing to think all that much (or patch anything).
If I want to add a bassline, make some voicing out of the modular bits (or be lazy and use a Moog), and connect to the correct sequencer / mix channels. The only thing I really need to remember is which oscillator and filter relate to which channel. If the bassline has drifted out of tune, it’s that oscillator. If I want to play the filter on the melody, it’s that knob. Everything else can be debugged on the fly pretty much!
It’s basically set up so that I have maximum flexibility in the sounds I choose to use, whilst being structurally rigid enough to be playable.
The longest set I’ve played with this rig incarnation was 3 hours. The complexity of that patch by the end was starting to get a little mentally taxing! :)

    • @robthebloke
      @robthebloke  6 месяцев назад +2

@@robertsokoowski7942 if your workflow is going to involve a computer, probably avoid modular tbh. The moog sub37 is probably the best mono synth ever made - and integrates stupidly well with most DAWs (and is also a phenomenal midi controller).
The sub 25 kinda sounds the same as the 37, but is not as good as an instrument.
Stephan Bodzin is the absolute master of the sub 37!!!
If the ability to only play one note at a time is a problem, possibly look at the Korg minilogue Xd? (It can play a 4 note chord, has some tasty FX built in, and will happily give you blade runner OST vibes for days!)
Guitar has always been my main instrument (30 odd years and counting!). Guitar midi controllers are all shit - don’t bother!
If you can tune a guitar by ear, you’ll be able to cope with playing a modular synth (if that’s the route you want to take).
It’s also worth considering where you want to do your final mixes, or apply FX. I do everything in the rig (which is actually a really stupid idea!), however a way more sensible idea would be to use an expert sleepers ES9 (which can send midi/audio from your PC->modular, and also acts as a USB audio device)
You can play a guitar through most synths. Typically the effect is a little bit like a wah pedal (a wah pedal is just a low pass filter, which is pretty much the most important knob on a synth!).
In the modular synth world, you can take a guitar signal and run it through an envelope follower. That basically gives you a ‘contour’ depending on how soft or aggressive you’re playing the guitar, which you can route around to other modules as a control input (make the drum louder, turn up the delay, whatever you want really)
If you want to go modular, start with VCV rack (free download!), and get a rough grip on how modular synths work before you spunk a load of money up the wall (ie, don’t be me!!).
Adding just an expert sleepers ES9 and say, a Befaco instrument interface, you’ve now got a modular system that you can play via your guitar (ish!)
What’s right for you isn’t something I can tell you I’m afraid, you’re the only one who can make that choice! I’m happy to answer any dumb questions you may have though, so do ask away!
I’ve answered a few modular synth questions over on this video: quick sequencing overview

But it second hand though, so you don’t lose money if you decide it isn’t right for you!
I’ve also got two DFAM’s, which are buckets of fun if you some something more percussive (Behringer has also made a cheap knockoff - the edge).
Again, have a look at the comments under my sequencer video, and please do ask as many questions as you need. It’s better to ask silly questions than it is to waste a tonne of money :)

Haha, no idea. Was only averaging 400 views a month until about 6 weeks ago. A man who’s finally been dragged out of his spare room perhaps? I just do this stuff because I find it fun. No other reason :)

How much is this kind of set up?

If you really want to know: www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2185798
Then add more money for the case, more for the patch cables, and don’t forget to add the postage costs (given I’m in Tasmania - postage costs add up to quite a lot!).
Quite a lot of that rig isn’t actually used here (because when I play live, I play in full surround sound, something that I can’t really record for RUclips)
I have been putting together a video for people wanting to get into eurorack. As part of that, I specced up the cheapest rig that I could actually use to play live. That came in at about 2.5k USD (for a minimum set up) to 3k (for a comfortable setup!).
The rig has been slowly built up over the last 7 years or so, and none of the super cheap Behringer modules were available back then. That kinda skews the rig costs upwards a bit from what you could do today.
Mind you, if you want a rig for free, download VCV rack. All of the expensive instruo modules in my rig are all available in VCV rack for free :)

@@robthebloke Thank you for the reply. 2500 doesn't seem so bad. Free os even better! Thank you for giving folks access to the genre. I have wanted to get into exactly what you do-minus any shows. Just for my pleasure. I have absolutely NO desire to be in front of a crowd, or be viewed. I am a little older and I face an uphill battle getting into the loop since I am starting from scratch. I wish someone offered lessons for a day.
Would you ever give a lesson/lessons? I got the bux.

@@badeugenecops4741 yeah, VCV rack is definitely the place to start. You should check out Omri Cohen’s RUclips channel. If you want to learn about VCV rack, that guys content is the place to start!
Purely for these modules alone, it’s worth it!
      library.vcvrack.com/Instruo
If you want a zero cost premium modular synth, there you go! I’d probably suggest playing about with two Tona’s for your oscillators, a traigh for a filter, a vinca for a VCA, two Ceis for envelopes, a tagh for noise + sample&hold, an ochd for an lfo, and a carn for some general utilities.
You’ll probably need a sequencer and a reverb, but I’m not sure what’s available in VCV I’m afraid, so try a few different ones out.
Start simple, and then build up. Learn what you can do with a limited set of modules first, and then add a new type of module once every week or two (then play about to see how the new module can interact with the existing ones).
Once you think you’ve got a rough understanding of what those modules do, and the ways in which those modules can interact, then you can start building up bass lines, melodies, drums, Fx, whatever!
In terms of getting into hardware, that’s where it can get expensive, especially if you’ve bought the ‘wrong’ module. If you see a second hand Behringer crave and/or edge up for sale, that’s probably your best starting point (don’t buy a brand new one!). They are clones of the Moog mother-32 and DFAM, and given that I have two of each in my rig, they do the job! They’ll either be synths you want to hold on to, or they’ll merely be stepping stones to what you do want (in which case you won’t lose money when you come to flog them)
I had planned to release an in-depth video when my subscriber count hit 500. Unfortunately/fortunately my subscriber count has gone from 74 to lots way faster than I’d imagined! It’s in the works though, but definitely get yourself started on the software version first! The big advantage of software is that’s its free. The big advantage of hardware is that it has actual knobs - which is a slightly nicer interface than a mouse :)

Is that all you can do with so many buttons and connections ?? It adds up to zero musicality and zero excitement. My phone ring tone has more character, is more engaging and has more heart and soul. These sounds are lifeless.

Sometimes I perform, sometimes I play about with patching, but either way I record the session.
I do this for fun. If I find something interesting about a video, I’ll upload it warts and all. If that’s not your jam, that ok :)

While on the surface nothing much is going on, the point is to craft the sound in a way to elicit a very specific vibe.
      Very chill; ambient.
Some on these synth sounds I've only ever heard in Aphex Twin songs, maybe it has something to do with all the "buttons and connections" idk.
