Soundscape experimentation (and practice)

- I was borderline on uploading this or not. This was just a play about with a few patch ideas, so it's not necessarily a performance as such. Starts a bit slowish. Towards the end I got a bit bored with the tempo, then it went somewhere interesting. By no means perfect though

You know it's going to be a good day when Rob uploads a new hour-long set just in time for the Monday work day
I can't wait for you to blow up on RUclips! Found you with "Something big sounding" from last month, really hoping you can incorporate it in something longer like this!
it wont take long :D
Same here - found this channel from the same recommended video and subscribed straight away. You're tapping right in to the sounds I like...
@@paulushdkouh yeah release a longer version of something big sounding, we need even bigger sounds
lol he's been blowing up on RUclips!! :D It was just a few months ago that he had
Since coming across him I've been getting his videos showing up in my feed daily. As far as I'm concerned he's already blown up the RUclips algorithm
Rob you creating this crazy immersive world in my head with different dimensions and levels . It’s like a video game . That’s absolutely fantastic
Huzzah, new set! Good morning and g'day, Rob and community🤟🎃
I hope everyone is havin a good one, today, and if you're not, then I wish you a swift turnaround for the better😁
Coming back to this for an immense trip. Need some grounding and this is physically connecting me to the earth. Thank you Rob❤
God this was like a spiritual laundromat....genuinely needed this. Every transition went with where my head was at and got me where I needed to be. Thank you Rob. Truly.
The moment I can actually give back I will. Thank you for helping me become human again.
BROTHER holy crap I just saw you gave my comment a heart lol it might not seem like much but that's huge brother. Like cosmic fistbump. Thank you Rob seriously, cheers!❤
I hope you're doing well too, friend.❤
@@i-love-comountains3850 hope you’re doing well too mate! Honestly, the best help anyone can give me is to be subscribed, beyond that I just hope you enjoy the music :)
Always a breathtaking sound experience. Mindblowing, thank you robthebloke 🙏

I feel SO INSPIRED after finding this channel!! You're amazing!!
More like this, please! Love how atmospheric and creepy this one is.
I have to say it
Someone has all this synth equipments and is totally there
You immersion depth is phenomenal
Yes please continue uploading these types of things. Often times the rough stuff is more interesting than the polished!
I'm glad you uploaded this. Lovely.
This is actually really good
The sheer amount of creativity and awesomeness! Lucky to be able to work with your tunes in the background. Thanks Rob!
Much love and respect from the Netherlands. Great stuff!
Bladerunner vibes 🔥🤩
Thank you for all your amazing works. Keep going!!!
Thank you very much! It’s appreciated! 🙏
I'm super glad you decided to post this, thank you!!!
👍👍 from Midwest USA
Those sounds are phat as phuck!
Thank you sir!
Recently discovered your channel and loving it!! Some great tunes. This one sounds so 80's and industrial.
Just found you about 2 weeks ago. You make some amazing music man. Keep doing what you do. It is great to go on these rides with ya.
This had some really fun grooves. I've been trying to repair two of my PCs the last couple days and my your nice long videos are really good for the work at hand.
I see your comment about it being slow, but I love these atmosphere sounds.
Very cool music to listen to in my car or even when working. Thanks ! Keep goin’ !
Greetings from the Netherlands.
Love you're vids and hope U will continue to make more. 😊
🔥🔥🔥
I'm glad you uploaded, thanks for sharing even if you don't consider it perfect 💚I think you'll have an audience if you ever want to give us a more in depth tour of your setup and how you build your patches.
Woooaaaaa ❤ Excelente!!
Bright music and monochrome videos contrast in meaning! Rob you are super!
Sooo good
so good!
this is so cool
I'm here for it. 🎶♥️🎶
Amazing. I dig the grayscale visuals.
❤
Amazing!
Somewhere between Jean-Michel Jarre, Orbital and Bedrock - just superb.
WOW..That is like "TANGERINE DREAM"-esque!
Please God
let this guy cook
Forever 😭
Rob's new video = automatic like
I have no idea what's going on with all these cables sticking out but I would assume you must be crafting your sound very deliberately as a Laurent Garnier would. Give it a few years and with a brain chip you'll be able to deliver your music straight from your synapses ;)
Many parts reminds me of the soundtrack in the 2004 flash game called Motherload 🤙
31:00-35:00 had me transcended
reminds me a Shadowrun scape, nice.
28 miinto tiss yea yea liking this.. On the dge of random yet all pops and squiddles coming back to order..a little mood lighting would go along way but as you say it was just a kinda thumb nail sketch of an idea..
Hi, your sets are awesome! especially under hash) I think you would be great at making a soundtrack in the style of Daft Punk - Tron: Legacy
What do you mean by "not perfect"?? It is better than 90% of all commercial stuff and at least better than 50% of the non-commercial stuff
I have two modes when I’m playing the synth. I have a live performance mode where I’m playing to a crowd - I kinda want everything to flow nicely, without anything that’s too jarring (and without a high enough peak to blow a PA speaker!).
Then there are times like this, where I’m just playing about with new patching ideas. If the new idea results in something cool, I’ll try to finesse the way I patch it up so I can use it live. I usually build up a mental checklist for a particular patching approach, eg when I plug in a new voice, is the volume level going to be right, is the filter closed initially, make sure I get the oscillators in tune, blah blah. Sometimes I get absorbed in setting up a patch, and forget the basics. Sometimes a new patch idea will need a new item in my mental checklist. Either way, by paying attention to my mistakes hopefully I’ll get a bit better with practice :)
Danke!
Thank you very much! It’s appreciated! 🙏
epic
Dune 3 soundtrack coming
B/W = 10/10
bro you're shit is great.. the videos are interesting as well, just some dude in his back-yard or home studio.... with 30k+$ of equipment
Just realised I've been listening to you for a while now and hadn't previously got around to subscribing.. My apologies...
Nice atmosphere ! I really like your stuff!! everything is going on smoothly. how are you solving chord changes over all instruments? btw thanks for following !
A combination of the ACL sinfonion and endorphins ground control
@@robthebloke ok that makes sense :) ..just watched a video of the ground control nice modul
How did you start learning how to use these synths to make music? Ive been starting to learn though its really hard to find good resources. You sound great!
Honestly, when I first started it was mostly non-musical bleep bloops. I think there is a lot of learning to done just in terms of what each module does. Then it’s that stage of figuring out how your modules can interact with each other. That’s all the fun experimentation stage - much like what I’m doing in this video to be honest.
Then I kinda progressed to making stuff rhythmic - ie getting everything in time! If your oscillators aren’t in tune with each other, it’ll sound a bit rubbish. It’s really worth spending time just practicing getting two VCO’s in tune. Start with just two, and make sure you train your ear to know when you’ve accidentally tuned the second OSC to a 5th vs the root.
Practice the following: play a major or minor triad as a repeating sequence (eg CEG). Attempt to tune the second VCO to C. If you then alternate between C and G on the second oscillator (eg root-> 5th), if you’ve tuned it correctly, it should sound good. If it’s tuned to something other than C, it won’t sound good!
The more oscillators you have, the harder this becomes! So keep to two initially, and then add another only when you’ve nailed being able to tune two by ear. I’m up to 12 in this rig, and that’s a major challenge!
My primary instrument of choice has always been the guitar, and so I only really started being able to make music once I figured out I could set up the whole synth to behave as a guitar. I’ve got a video that covers some of my sequencing setup, but the short version is this:
I have 3 pitch channels on my sequencer (ground control by endorphines). Channel 1 controls the root note (effectively the position of the barred chord on the guitar fretboard). That feeds in as the master transpose to my precision adder (noise engineering quantus pax). Every other CV channel is then summed on top - then I only really need to think about the fingering of C minor/major/whatever.
At that point I just fallback to my 30 or so years experience of improvising guitar solos. Just throw a minor blues pentatonic scale over the top, and it’ll probably sound alright (every guitarist will know what I’m talking about!)
The trick though is investing in a really good sequencer, and spending a lot of time getting to know it. Your modules may come and go, but your sequencer probably won’t. It’s important to realise you’re not really learning to play your synths, you’re actually learning to play your sequencer!
After that, it’s just a case of practice, practice, practice!
Hope that helps! (The way I do things works for me given my background. YMMV. Someone with a background in piano would probably want to go a different route!)
how much do you think the whole gear cost ? Amazing understanding and control of the concepts of each and every button/ knob
Actually not that much financially, but a hell of a lot of time was involved!
I spent years soldering together various modules, which I then sold off as completed modules. The pandemic was a particularly good time for me. Used the profit to buy the modules I actually wanted (but don’t have the skills to make myself).
All in, it’s probably cost me somewhere between $3k and $5k. Modular grid reckons this rig is about $20k. www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2422962
I reckon that’s probably pre-pandemic pricing though. You’d probably be slightly north of $30k now at a guess?
Or just download VCV rack for free? :)
@@robthebloke I cannot thank you enough for this response. I wish you good health :) thanks a lot!
hey Rob, huge fan of your work! i didn't find an email address to contact you about this so i'll ask here - would it be okay for me to use your live music performances as background music in RUclips videos (with proper attribution/credit, of course)?
keep up the excellent work!
At the moment, even with my express permission, you’d still open yourself up to the possibility of getting a YT copyright strike sadly. I’m trying to figure out the best way to navigate that problem at the moment. Hopefully I’ll have something in place soon!
Dying to know how you made this sound at 1:37, have been trying to get that kinda voice right for ages
4 sawtooth waves stacked into a 24db filter (one tuned an octave lower, one might be tuned at a 5th, but can’t remember), with a tiny bit of resonance. I’m just changing the pitch of the oscillators whilst modifying the filter cutoff. You could probably do a similar thing using a slow glide.
man u are a big inspiration....u are a big pro next to my shit ...check out my music if u want but its noting like that man keep it up
Every great journey starts with a few steps man 😁👍
Subscribed to check you out later, bud🤟🎃
how i can contact u please ?
Buchla's????
Nah, eurorack in moog 104hp racks (and some moogs)
What is all this stuff ?
