    I have and I also have tried the Mold star 15 (not sure if I remember it right but it is the cute green silicone) and I used it for a small item but ANYWAY what was I going to say is it let out the air bubbles by itself! I didn't see any after casting but I saw them coming up when the curing started. I don't know if it works like that always but I was pleasantly surprised :)

    Hi all, I have a question about degassing chambers and pressure pots: specifically if I already have a pressure pot hooked to an air compressor can I just buy a vacuum pump and use the same container for both degassing and pressurizing. I know there will be some trade offs (like not having a clear lid to see the process). It is just that every $ saved on tools can be used on materials not to mention save some space on the work shop (I mean garage)

    Hi Bill & Brit! I love these videos so much and have found them both entertaining and informative, hell, inspirational too. I have a project in mind that might turn out to be worth mass producing for an Etsy-type sale. The one thing I haven't found specified in your videos is to do with the original that the cast is made from. Specifically, if I were to produce something in clay (don't know which kind yet) and then make a cast from it, can the clay be used again? The reason I ask is that my storage space is limited so if I made a number of things AND had loads of casts then I'd be looking for a new home soon :)

      @FreakySei 5 лет назад +1

      Looks into how LARP weapons are made ! It might help ya :D
      The fiberglass rod is a great start, but please note you would need to put some sort of protection for the tip in case the rod pops out of the silicone. The walking end will get damaged over time with friction and such, so maybe consider protecting it with leather or something else ? Also, repeated use might cause tears to appear in the silicone over time

    • @punishedprops

      It really depends on what you plan to have the final piece cast in. If the head is meant to be cast in a flexible material like latex, you would make a stone mold. For a rigid casting you'd make a silicone mold kind of like this: ruclips.net/video/mZ07x2Wvwps/видео.html

    Bill love your videos. wanna ask your opinion. I have 3d printed a full human sized ironman faceplate. it's abs plastic and I have a dream of casting it in metal to get weight and shine etc. I wanna make a mold of it and cast it in wax so I can make a refractory mold of that and melt out the wax and pour the aluminum in. I wanted to ask how do you think I best go about it. the mask as you know is a complex shape so I'm not sure how to deal with eye holes and the curve of it. and I want the mold to be ridgig enough to make wax replicas. also I've tried it on a smaller scale in a different manor and it worked to an extent.
    love to see what you think on my project.

      anyways awesome channel. I watch all your videos. very inspiring.

    So, I have a question that you can probably answer. I want to cast silicone vacuum canister diaphragms (car parts that aren't really available anymore, or are prohibitively expensive). Seems like I would want to use a platinum cure ~30 durometer silicone for this. I have a 3D printer for making the negatives and I am essentially casting small flexible cups with about 2-3mm wall thickness so the release should be pretty easy as well. Does my analysis from what you explained here sound about right? Is there a better choice? The originals are rubber and have almost all ruptured, silicone seems like a much better alternative anyway. They should be flexible and handle many cycles and that sounds like a job for silicone.

    • @punishedprops

      You can actually cast in a urethane rubber! We always recommend checking with the folks at Smooth-On to see what materials will work best for your project, they're really helpful. When casting in a flexible material, you'll want to make sure your mold is rigid - something like resin or plaster. The Smooth-On folks can help with that too

      Does the silicone come out in that specific orange color or did you have to add silicone pigment?

    Question for Punished Props
    FlexSeal has introduced a new product called Flex Putty. It appears to be a rather thick and heavy silicone.
    Could you evaluate it's suitably for making molds instead of the 2 part stuff you normally use. This request is more for others as right now I'm not in any position to do anything other than enjoy learning.

    I was wondering how one goes about looking for places locally that sell these types of materials? I do an online search and all that comes up is Hobby Lobbies, Micheals and Hobby Town. How would one go about "searching" online for stores? Just trying to find places locally that if I need something fast that I have options.

      +NiownEd Our local pottery supply store has molding supplies. Also, we have a plastic supply store that also sells molding supplies called TAP Plastic. I'd suggest looking for a pottery store, checking it out, then asking if they know of any other local suppliers.

    Hi, I could use some help with my project. I'm really wanting to get into all this molding and casting stuff (not sure what the technical term for this) but my first project I wanna make copies of my wisdom teeth (yeah that right I made a bracelet out of my wisdom teeth but I want copies just in case they break, and yes my braces are on the bracelet too) what silicone, resin I've been getting so confused with all the names, would I use or would work best on making copies of my teeth?
    Thanks in advance I know that was quite the spill, and I really appreciate any help you can give me.
    Also p.s. my second project, a much bigger one I've wanting to make another life mask the first one came out all right but I made the cast out of the stoney stuff and my paper mache keeps sticking to it making it impossible to make a mask or helmet with out destroying it. Is there like a resin that is a plastic that can support this or I'm not sure what I'm looking for. There's like no books on this and very few comprehensive RUclips videos.
    Help me Bill Kenobi, your my only help! Again thanks in advance

      +LaVar Bates I would contact the folks at Smooth-On. They will be able to help you figures out the best materials to use.

      Punished Props thank you so much for the reply! So I found the body double that you and Bob used in that life mask episode and looks like the thing that I need, his later video he make the cast out of plaster.
      Do you think the paper mache would stick to the plaster, or would it be better to use a plastic casting material?
      Sorry one more thing would the body cast also be able to work with my wisdom teeth?

    Hey Bill, I know this is a old video, so dunno if you'll see this. But I recently got a board game called Mage Knight. In it are 68 little plastic crystal tokens with jagged tops. Each being 1 cm wide and about 1 cm and a half tall. They're in 6 different colors, gold, black, green, blue, red, and white. And while they work fine for playing, they're kind of dull and the green, black, and blue ones are really dark. In low light, it's sometimes hard to tell the three apart.
    So anyway, I was considering trying to use a set of fifteen of them to make a mold. And then get some resin and tints to cast nicer ones. That would be brighter shades and more transparent.
    However, I've never done anything like this before, so I'm not certain what to get. I was think foam core for the box. And I'm assuming I'd just line them up in like two rows inside and pour some kind of silicone on top? I'm currently looking into Smooth Cast 325 for the resin and the tints by them as well. But I have no clue on what silicone to use. I'd like to get something that can be reused at least 6 times and capture those jagged tops. Without damaging my existing pieces in case I utterly fail and have to go back to using the base pieces. I don't have a pressure pot or anything like that, so I'd also be preferred to use something that's not super bubbly if possible.

      Mold Max 29NV is a great silicone if you don't have a vacuum chamber. I'd go with Smooth Cast 326. You can tint it to get your colors and it's longer cure time will allow more bubbles to escape. You're still going to get some bubbles without a pressure pot, but it'll be pretty good.

    Don't you have the silicone reference ? Like silicone RTV 151 ?
    That's usually the only kind I can find but never tested it x).

    what is curing inhibition?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  5 лет назад +1

      In order for silicone to cure a chemical reaction has to take place. If there is a contaminant that gets into the mix, like latex or something similar that changes the chemical balance, the reaction won't happen correctly, causing the silicone to cure poorly or not at all.

    I like how you say "man this is expensive." then basically say deal with it. In fact buy extras to practice on to learn and then probably buy a degassing chamber.
    The cost of admission is way way way high on this
