I have studied 7 star mantis for years. I have also studied the five animal styles. As the years flew by, I learned Japanese jujitsu as well as judo , as well other martial sciences. I also boxed. I am still learning and seeking new martial sciences. After 45 years studying martial arts, I still consider myself a student.
Dear Sifu & close relations, please accept my sincere condolences for the passing of your beloved Sifu Cheng. My Heartfelt Sympathy to all who knew him and were close to him. I feel somewhat embarrassed to say I didn't know it concerned him specifically until I read the message below and started searching for news feed. International news isn't that thorough here, so I'm sorry for responding late. Eventhough I only knew him from the videos and not in real life through education, I felt (and still feel) absolutely gutted and shocked hearing about his passing. I wish all who were close to him all the Love and Strength needed to overcome this loss, and a full and speedy recovery / processing of this grief. Please be well, and may training give you the tools to find constructive distraction and channeling of emotions in order to give his passing (but above all his Legacy) a place in your life and heart. Yours sincerely
I too would like to express my gratitude to your Grandmaster, teachers and school in general for sharing this beautiful style and study material with the world.Almost anything concerning Chinese Martial Arts has my attention and appreciation, but these videos are a true treat and honor to watch and study. If I can help preserve Praying Mantis this way, then I happily will.Thank you so much for sharing this Cultural heritage. You have both my respect and gratitude.
I put this video in a screen in my bedroom and try to cope the movement sequence..its invigorating to do this routine, I like the clean and firm arm movement plus step. Thanks
There seems to be a difference between what kung fu movies show as mantis and what the traditional form is as seen here, is movie mantis just that, or is there some actual moves that are derived from actually combat?
I believe that self-defence applications such as the material that you see in these videos are the simplified moves of what you see in movies.Choreography in movies is always embelished to make it look more appealing to the audience.Same goes for modern wushu vs self-defence: the first is for points / the ring / show, and the latter is for the street / self- development. But the foundation , to my knowledge , remains the same.
Bruce Lee possibly couldn´t have done forms/drills such as the one in the backyard footage without this art (assuming he trained it because it looks similar to some of his movements that I couldn´t figure out yet, that he wasn´t just making up out of nowhere). I think Dan Inosanto talked about Lee making him train it for a time. Also, what´s up with these "Balls" in Bruce´s forms and drills?!
Not sure if Bruce Lee trained in Praying Mantis but he did write about our style in his journal. Wouldn't be surprised if he picked up a few PM sets as many practitioners in Hong Kong trained with one another. Most of his Kung Fu skill is from Wing Chun which shares many similarities. No clue about the "balls".
Sifu, could you please elaborate on "Contact & Cling" in the section "Twelve Keyword Formula" around 15:54 ? I'm having difficulty understanding and applying it . Thank you again for your time and help . Thanks to your videos I'm 'hooked' on Praying Mantis kung fu
@bakhok The confusion is caused by Front and Reverse Angle being shown mixed. Perhaps don't give up too soon trying to master what you like. Try this and see if it works: -Front Angle - Section 1: 22:20 ; Section 2: 23:48; Section 3: 24:07; Section 4: 25:10. -Reverse Angle - Section 1: 22:57; Section 2: 23:26; Section 3: 24:33; Section 4: 24:56. If this is still too fast for you, select "Settings" under the video screen and slow down the video play speed to 0,25 so you can follow along. Good luck & enjoy
@@_Just_George I give lesson in Seven Star Mantis and I found out that this Form is to difficult for beginners. This Form is not a good Start in this Style. You can better teach Dor Gong or Sap Baat Sao.I created 2 Forms for Beginners and the first Mantis Form who I teach is Dor Gong. It is a wonderful system.
I like the stance drills, teaching you how to actually move in your stances
I learnt this form at Chin Woo. One of the essentials

I already do similar stretches. The side stretch I got from Franco Columbu the body builder and the knee rotation I got from Kwon Wing Lam.
Great job.

A lot of those arts share similar moves
