@Dig Byck the Kung Fu Frauds were the people who talked trash and challenged the MMA guy, so he was just defending himself and his reputation. The Chinese Govt punished a guy for self defense.
There is another reason that Byron didn't really discuss. During the cultural revolution when all traditional Chinese culture was black listed and attempts were made to exterminate it, many of the serious traditional Quanfa masters fled mainland China and went to HKG, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. The few that remained in mainland China had to go into hiding and could not practice or teach their martial art publicly. This resulted in a whole generation gap in the passing down of traditional technique. Even when the government finally decided suppressing Chinese martial arts was a bad idea and tried to restore it, they banned SanDa competitions. They didn't want “comrades fighting comrades”. Also, masters who had remained in hiding during the cultural revolution were few and far between, and some had not practiced much or any during the prohibition, because getting caught by the red guard meant punishment or death. You can forget a lot and lose a lot of skill in fifteen or more years of not training. When the government in Beijing decided to create a contemporary Chinese “martial art” they focused on performance rather than combat. They took their interpretation of traditional quanfa techniques and combined them with gymnastics/acrobatics and Peking Opera to create contemporary Wushu and standardized Taiji Quan forms for performance and sports competition. While many people who practice these are amazing athletes, most of them have never thought about actual fighting application or practiced realistic sparring. Practicing forms alone or even two person “fighting forms” is not adequate training or preparation for a fight where another trained person is really trying to punch, kick, strike, lock and throw you as hard as they can. As Bruce Lee said, it is like trying to learn to swim on dry land. So many of these so called “masters” that Xu XiaoDong knocked out had never been in a sparring match, practice or otherwise in their lives. They had deluded themselves into thinking practicing their techniques and forms in the air was enough. There are still a few traditional martial artists in China who train in the old way, who know how to apply their technique, but they are few and far between.
(Taiwanese voice) So, there's another layer beyond the East vs West narrative. You need to understand that, in Chinese culture, filial piety is everything. When I was a kid, my dad was godlike and his dad was the god over my god. The first time I heard an American friend call his dad by his first name, I nearly fainted. Authority, in that culture, comes from age and wisdom. That's why, in Martial Art flicks, the most powerful guy is the super old dude. In the West, progress is forward looking with the new generations breaking through and improving upon the past. In Chinese culture, authority comes top-down and reaches backwards in time. That's why the MMA guy beating up the old "masters" was such a no-no. In that culture, your parents are authorities over your life; the government is big daddy. Their citizens might not be able to make public criticisms against the State, but kicking the old kung fu master's ass has all the implications which, of course, the communist party picked up right away.
I'm an American whose lived here the vast majority of his 31 years of existence and I have NEVER heard someone refer to their dad using their first name. That's just weird.
Thank you for that Ive studied some books on chinese culture And what you say is an echo of what ive read. Most americans have no clue at all about the chinese mind. Notice how one of the individuals answered your comment …….with …..laughter. That says alot.
@@amibrainwashed i have and it was strange to hear that .i had to actually get used to hearing it buts it. However notice how eric pubdeffs response was which is far more intense so it says alot of cultural identities.
A martial artist refusing to fight someone because their art is 'too dangerous' is like me saying I can run faster than Usain Bolt but won't race him, because I just run so fast that I'd embarrass him badly and ruin his career, and I'm too humble to do that lol.
Well its a half truth but yes. The problem is that in some matarial arts like kungfu tiger style (in the real one) they literally teach you how to grab someones throath crush it and take the insides out with your bare hand grip steength and fingers within 1 sec. Someone who practiced this technique wil obviously not use it in the ring but then he looses like 10 year of practice from is arsenal. Also mma is "not real" in the sense that you cant do anything too dangerous with your oponent. So you cant just kick him in the nuts. BUT what you said is also true. A true warrior should be capeable of fighting in the ring too . And the problem is not that they lose but how they lose 99%of the time mainly because of the lack of real practice and sparing.
@@eggscheese2763 Horse shit, I'm afraid to inform you. Name one recorded incident where someone had their throat ripped out in the fashion you describe. I'll save you the trouble - there isn't one. My dad always told me kung fu is to build the body and mind. It's not for fighting and he was right. He taught me wing chun and one day in middle school I got fed up with bullies throwing my weeb friends into the dumpster and then I got thrown into the dumpster.
Some martial arts are traditional, but it never hurts to try and evolve them into combat/ competitive/ street fighting. As Bruce Lee said, "Rehearsed routines lack the flexibility to adapt." One should try to be creative, practice with experienced fighters/practitioners, and adapt a style that fits with the situation.
That could be, though this comment kinda misses the point of the problem addressed in this video. The guy who got beat wasn't a traditional martial artist or any type of professional martial artist whatsoever. He was a fraud.
as useful certain techniques may be it's always more important to train the foundations before the techniques. You could have memorized as many techniques in the entire world and you would still end up having your ass beaten by a guy who mastered his footwork, stamina, and strength instead of technique.
True but Bruce Lee was also unconventional in his belief that there's a lot in eastern martial arts that gets in the way of just beating the shit out of people.
You get two nations of 100 million each. Give them a fighting sport to develop with fixed rules to develop in seclusion. They will have almost exactly the same technique. Biologists call this convergent evolution. I watched "fight commentary breakdowns" throughout the pandemic, which is basically a Chinese American dude narrating traditional Chinese martial artists getting beaten down by MMA practitioners. One notable thing was the 1930s to 1940s videos on the channel. This included French Sanshou practitioners going at it, long term US army types fighting with boxing and wrestling techniques, Chinese nationalists practicing dao fencing, and someone trying a jian form that his grandfather had taught him in his basement. The notable thing was that the dao fencers used very similar techniques to western saber fencers, while the basement Jian dude's techniques were not applicable to anything. There are two interpretations that I'm split between: 1. Actual Chinese killing arts, as practiced by the nationalists, actually don't look much different than Western Martial arts. The communists chose to emphasize theater arts instead. 2. Chinese martial arts were actually destroyed by the Manchu, leaving only stage arts. The Nationalists were actually just implementing Prussian training with Chinese weapons.
*Bruce Lee* said it best when he said that he threw out what didn't work and kept what did. *MMA* is just that, coupled with other disciplines *not* found in Kung Fu.
Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do was the first mixed martial art. He invented this after studying and sparing with many different martial arts stylists. Bruce chose the most combat effective techniques and combined them together. He was only interested in combat effectives! He realised that Kata i.e. forms/patterns etc are useless for a real street fight or on the battlefield! Western boxing, Muay Thai (Thai kick boxing), Krav Magga and Russian System do not have any kata. They do lots of full contact free sparring. They learn to take hits i.e. full contact kicks and punches. Their training is really tough but realistic!
Okay but as Bruce Lee also stated Combat as it is should be taken like a dance between you and your opponent but a very serious dance. "If your talking about "Sport " that's one thing but if your talking about Combat then baby you better kill me before I get to you "
Bruce Lee SAID he threw out what didn't work, but it was, like, his opinion, man. MMA tournaments proved what does and does not work by people getting their heads smashed in or not. PLOT TWIST: what REALLY works is all the stuff the MMA tournaments prohibit. UFC was early days famous for "no rules" (even then not really) but that changed quite quickly. Look up UFC prohibited moves... it's a gold mine for personal defence training
Bruce was so ahead of his time, he actually called these kung Kung fu systems/performances "the classical mess". Many Real Chinese kung fu was eliminated and was forbidden to practice during the cultural revolution.
Sadly, such nonsense isn't unique to the Chinese "martial artists". Akido is just as phony. The fraud has gotten so bad, people teach it like it's real. Similar matches have been made between "Akido Master" and Judo, for example. Needless to say, the Judo practitioner tossed the man around like a doll. You could see the "master" try to fight off the Judo opponent using his Chi force that always worked within his school with his students.
@@Americaninparis2012 not even unique to martial arts. Patriotism is the same way until wars. Sometimes you're kind of good, sometimes not. But the chest beating (so useful in politics) is just upping any self-delusion. It is useful for unity and short term pride.
@@ajaxmax7843 That and they are fake masters which damages the reputation of the marital art. Disrespectful to those who legitimately train in Chinese martial arts or any martial art for that matter.
What I cannot begin to understand, is how these fake martial artists can be so deluded that they would actually accept such a challenge. Like, what the hell did they think was gonna happen?
@@StartRunning. please tell me that accent was unintentional. Since you're someone who uses "folly" unironically, I could see you adding an incorrect accent to a French word, thinking it made you look impressive. Unless you're not a native English speaker...In that case, using "folly" and an incorrect accent on an English/French word are of course uncriticizable
Even Bruce Lee learned when he came to the west, that even someone with a rudimentary understanding of grappling can take down an advanced striker. And he started to incorporate it into his training. I don't mean to knock Wushu but grappling, catch-can wrestling, even greco roman are just more practical to use in a combat situation. It doesn't hurt that wrestlers tend to be few well conditioned athletes that can grapple for an hour.
He realized the limitations of Wing Chun and studied fencing, western boxing, grappling, silat, FMA, and more. However concepts from Wing Chun did not completely disappear in his approach. Trapping in boxing was an example - you can see this in fighters like lomachenko
Once you hit a grappler hard enough in the face, their strength will quickly drain away. You just have to be bolder... there's nothing really bold about using grappling skills to take someone down and hold him. But to smash someone's face in as hard as you can... that's bold, and if you do it early, the wrestler has no chance.
@@buddyrevell511 "But to smash someone's face in as hard as you can... that's bold, and if you do it early, the wrestler has no chance." Do you mean sucker punching someone?

I think there are important elements to Kung Fu for a philosophical, meditative, modest, and simple life. Sadly it seems that Chinese society today reflects none of the values of Kung Fu.
These trash-talk on this page I doubt that they understand that aspect of Kung-Fu… all the only they understand about Kung-Fu is just the combat aspect!
Exactly, people really don't understand the term of "art" in martial arts. More than a combat system, they focus a lot on the mental , spiritual and artistic sides.
A (Maori) friend of mine was taught Aikido from the age of 7. His dad, ex-forces, didn't want a thug son. And until the age of 14 he was smashed to bits by school thugs. So his dad relented and took him to Muay Thai and within 2 years he was a beast. BUT all the training and theory from his Aikido did come into play once he got his "brawling" skills up. But he needed to learn how to take punches, take kicks, take pain, and by physical in attacks, before the theory could be put into practice. There is nothing wrong with a lot of martial arts, but as Mike Tyson said "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face". So IMO cross-training is where it is at. Whatever fancy style you train in, be it Kung Fu or Karate, be it Judo or BJJ, be it any weapon style, be it hard or soft... add some tough-gym kickboxing too. Get used to throwing a punch and taking a punch.
Well Tyson got smashed by a bouncer at a pub. Just like that other Boxing Heavy weight champion who talked his way into the UFC fight and got mauled in the first round with out even swinging a punch. The guy who fought him actually punched him several times before choking him out.
Traditional Martial Arts has become redundant completely. Only through full contact training especially boxing one can learn how to deal with the shock and awe of consistent attacks...

@@killaken2000 I agree with your statement with very few select Chinese martial arts, but the remainder, I'd say the problem is that there are a lot of 'masters' who fool others into thinking that they are a 'master'. What is the criteria to be a master? Easy! You just call yourself one! You can do it right now! One of those frauds in the video knows 'Thunder Style Tai Chi' which is not a thing! The problem is that people are criticizing these 'masters' as if they are actual representatives of the styles, but I think that's giving the frauds way too much respect. Before even criticizing the training, people should criticize that these 'masters' don't even know the art to being with.
@@DylanBegazo You are correct that in fighting, aesthetics do not matter and funtionality should be prioritized. However, there are many practitioners who intentionally practices Chinese Martial Arts for performances. You may often see videos of people wearing silky attire (designed to make you look more fluid) with Chinese music in the background, performing a form. This is not a mistake of their part; some simply do not practice for fighting but for performances.
I spent time training in what was considered a "hard core" traditional martial arts school in China. There was a lot of tough training going on there and some of those people had developed some serious talents but it all came across as more artistic than combat related. It was great for show and intimidation but for fighting against well trained, combat-oriented people who were not going to lose their focus, it wasn't that useful.
I just recently learned of the concept of "junk science" in the field of Forensics. This concept also applies very strongly to the traditional martial arts. Pure traditional martial artists commonly try to rationalize how they would beat an MMA fighter "if it was a real fight" based on hypothetical arguments. Effectively, traditional martial artists use a form of "junk science" to argue the merit of their worthless styles that are not pressure-tested and are unproven.
@NanuNanu81 Martial arts only allows you to combat someone who also uses that same martial art. A kung fu fighter has nothing to combat say, a boxer for example. Or just a proper MMA fighter.
If you want to win a fight, not a competition, read the MMA rule book, Learn everything they have banned, and do those things. It's unlikely an MMA fighter will throw a punch in a bus queue, bar, or just the street.
@@KillerBill1953 Just because they are banned doesn't mean that an MMA fighter wouldn't know how to use it. Many still train headbutts, know how to slam you on your head, will kick you in the genitals or stomp on your head while your down. " It's unlikely an MMA fighter will throw a punch in a bus queue, bar, or just the street." Yeah, they'll probably elbow you or grapple with you. What's your point?
During the Boxer Rebellion, a lot of boxers were convinced by propaganda telling them that there were techniques that would make them bulletproof. I'm sure some of the more tested and rational martial artists knew this wasn't true, but certainly some believed it. Some of those who did found out the hard way.

Its akin to saying you have to positively respect the Confederacy or Nazis because they contributed to world history and warfare while containing repugnant ideologies. Many martial arts, to include variations of Kung Fu, contain immense amount of dogshit fluff and unnecessary crap. The sad part about this reality, is you clearly miss that it was one of Bruce Lee's major contentions with classical martial arts. Too much unnecessary bullshit. When you distill "martial arts" down to being effective, you are literally left with the core combat arts in MMA and combat sports today. Put a "Kung Fu Master" in the cage with a MMA practitioner, and just the ability to understand being hit and hitting back is a huge gap between the two in the MMA fighters enormous favor. Your "no true master!" position is worthless. It's all junk.. like the guys who break stacks of boards and bricks, but they break like they were sawed. Take a sledge hammer and break a board and it will shatter and splinter. I've seen "martial artists" fight boxers, and as long as they can kick and run, they hold their own... but, when the boxer gets within punching range, it's all over.
This video says the kung fu masters that got beaten up are frauds and not representative of kung fu. But it doesn't address how "real" kung fu masters will fare against MMA. In general, if one does not evolve against the competition, then one will lose. It's as simple as this.
"When the truth offends, we lie and lie until we can no longer remember it is even there, but it is still there. Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later, that debt is paid."
When the forces of good are too weak to overcome evil, a nemesis is spawned, since evil is inherently self-defeating. Reactionary behavior, pragmatism, those further evil's agenda, since they do not bring anything new and good into this world.

I respect Byron's discipline, his endeavor to study Chinese martial arts, and revealing the prevalence of fraudsters exploiting nationalist sentiments . But after speaking candidly about this, an update may be required. has he been jailed, sent away to be"re-educated", experienced a vastly lowered 'Social Credit score', or been kicked out of China yet?
The unknown is often viewed as mystical. While stationed in Korea I learned that practioners of Taekwondo view a lot of the Chinese martial arts as dancing. I don't underestimate anyone that practices what they do. China has really put itself out there as an internal and international bully. I commend this guy for exposing some of the nonsense. I'm surprised this made it out.
In the army there was a teakwondo guy ... won a few comps, and was a complete ass. He bullied me so I greb him buy the nuts and jaw and slammed his face into the ground ... and im not a train fighter ... I just got angry ... needless to say ... happy ending.
Thank you for this video! I grew up in China and love my culture. The part that really pisses me off is that this whole fake Kung Fu stuff to promote culture and nationalism is so unnecessary. Kung Fu is cool and great to begin with, there is no need to add all that fluff. For those that don't know, all of those things mentioned here and more, including that stuff about the guy with the pigeon unable to fly from his hand, comes from a class of Chinese fiction literature called WuXia, which mystifies Kung Fu. I happen to be a huge fan of those literature and it has a very big following in China. Most people are smart enough to recognize the story and Kung Fu tricks from the novels to be just that, fiction. Unfortunately we do have people that genuinely believe in the ability of a Kung Fu master to fly, or to knock down 20 huge men with a single punch. Plus there are also those who will try to benefit from the ignorance of others, thereby selling "traditional Chinese Medicine" or "miracle treatments", which, just like this Kung Fu thing, takes away from the credibility of the real Chinese Medicine. In my opinion, all of these actually stems from the fact that China has been the target of many foreign domination and invasions for about a century, starting in the later half of the 18th century and our national self esteem has really taken a hit. These gimmicks are just our government trying to overcompensate. It's sad because I know for a fact that the Chinese culture that I grew up to love and treasure is more than enough to impress anyone, had we just promote them for what they really are.
I remember my mother wanting to send me to the Tae Kwon Do shop around the corner because my cousins used to go there and I used to get into fights with Bullies all the damn time. Being in the hood, you can expect this when tough guys are hyped up in the community. So, I denied and wouldn't go to any Karate or TKD club, I would have done boxing or Grappling type martial arts. Capoeria and other arts are beautiful, but I did my research as little as it was at the time and came to the conclusion that if somebody was a legit street fighter or larger than me and liked to grab, got a hold of me I probably wouldn't win that fight with choreography. Needless to say, I never joined a club, and this kid who knew karate in my school was being hyped up by some kids, he acted like he wanted to fight me, but he wouldn't even come down the stairs to back his talk up. At that point, I was like most of these teachers/forms are frauds.

This is what Bruce Lee was saying 40 years ago. Bruce Lee did not promote the "Traditional" KungFu. In fact, he said it is weak, wasteful, ineffective and useless in real fight. He mixed up Judo, Karate, TaeKwonDo, Aikido and Jujitsu, rebranded his "Jeet Kun Do"
You forgot it’s mostly Wing Chun mixed with other style cause Wing Chun was create by a woman to fight against men, for the weak to stand against the strong. Most Asian physical strength are weak when compared to black and White men so its hard to compare our martial art to eachother.
I've recommended this as a watch for several of my colleagues. Just a sad state of affairs. I did most of my Chinese training in Taiwan even though my original intent was to study on the mainland. In retrospect I think it was the right decision.
It doesn't matter; the techniques themselves are simply bunk exactly because they're NOT designed to work in real life i.e. self defense. Okay, so I've done martial arts on and off for a good part of childhood to teen to adult life (Taiwanese here). I've seen many westerners take martial arts and like martial arts for the wrong reasons and wrong motives. Byron is probably the first westerner I've ever seen in my life that gets it 100%. Like, I've met black belts in karate, people that studied shaolin martial arts for 2+ decades not fully understand it. I've seen some that started their own school in the US not get it. Byron, 100% does. Kudos man.Seriously, like all the praise I can give him. He's an honorary ethnic chinese in my book.
There is a saying from several traditions: "Those who speak do not know, and those who know do not speak. (or at least speak quietly)" Seems to apply to the self-proclaimed experts. I loved Byron's comments. He reminds me of my instructor many years ago. Thanks for putting this together.
Heh. This reminds me of the "Dunning-Kruger effect", which essentially means that people who are ignorant about a subject, or incompetent at a certain skill, tend to overestimate themselves; since they don't know all the stuff they don't know about, while people who are skilled/educated in something, tend to underestimate themselves, and/or overestimate others.
"We are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. In my experience in martial arts it's largely about the artist and school, rarely about the art itself. All the best martial artists I've ever met have the same common traits as the best scientists I've met: humility from a place of Socratic ignorance paired with curiosity that brings a desire to test and learn. Every time I see a martial artist lacking those traits I know I'm seeing the pride before the fall. The key to martial arts is simple: stay humble, stay curious, never stop testing and learning. These guys getting their asses kicked have for whatever reason failed that key completely.
Chinese people are not humble people. Even their monks and all those spiritual Chinese folks I think it's just a facade a lot of times. Most Chinese people i think are either too busy trying to survive, or if they're out of survival mode they're in greed mode. Humbleness is nowhere in the picture for many of them.

@WhyAmIWearing ARedShirt - Indeed. To add, it's also a way of life, philosophical and ultimately attributed to war and cultural history. However, that's neither here, nor there. It being the aforementioned isn't that point. It's about the "use of". The application of said art / science [i.e. physical, mental, spiritual, business, etc] throughout one's endeavors. Learning any martially oriented system is worthless in combat, if one does not wield a "fighters spirit". Without it, or legit combat experience. One's intended use of, will fail pitifully, as shown.

I loved the fact, that guy being interviewd sayed, that MA's bring people together and shouldn't be used as a tool for fractioning. Love that sentiment!
I think what MMA has proven (and what Bruce Lee tried to explain to the world many years ago) is that the outcome of a fight is not determined by the fighter's style, but by the approach the fighter takes to combat. You can use kung fu (or gong fu, or gung fu) in a fast, effective, and practical manner...or you can use it an artistic and impractical way...or you can use it to "win" in a competitive environment. You have to adapt (again, like "water", as Lee famously said) and understand when it's important to strike quickly, abandon certain maneuvers, switch from striking to grappling, etc. A strident "crane style guy" who's obsessed with moving slowly and gracefully is not gonna stand a chance against a ferocious kickboxer, unless he adapts to the speed and aggression of his opponent.
Warning, Weeb Comment from me XD: And that is why Batman is actually a well crafted realistic superhero. If you look at certain coreography associated with movies like the Dark Knight or Animated fight sequences, Batman utilizes a variety of combined techniques, combining jujutsu with mma boxing etc. etc. If you watch Batman vs Shredder from a recent crossover animation, when he fights the Shredder, he initially starts to lose using asian techniques before switching it up with ordinary boxing and then decimating Shredder.
@@mikotomisaka8714my view is that you should train boxing for boxing, muay thai for powerful kicks and jiu jitsu for grappling. Jiujitsu always win if the guy doesn't know how to counter it and if the fight goes to the floor. Boxing is very effective at close range and good leg kicks can win a fight over time. Mix it up smartly and you will be able to fight very well

Absolutely excellent commentary and explanation of the intricacies of Chinese martial arts and how they relate to this entire MMA debacle by Byron Jacobs. This guy really knows his stuff, culture and martial arts-wise.
There is a huge difference fighting street fight, MMA, chinese martial art, and entertainment fighting. Majority of people everywhere are hooked to entertainment fighting shown in movies and actually believe those styles are used in real fighting. Even the great Bruce Lee went against his teacher for this, real fighting is not limited by fighting styles or governing rules.

You got that wrong it should read combat sport, martial arts are just that an art form to entertain people, MMA or combat sports in general is taught to kill someone
Martial arts are combat arts. Maybe you want to distinguish typical Eastern and typical Western. There is that cultural divide based on individualism (which separates) vs. collectivism (which unites). Fear makes those two poles repulse each other instead of finding common ground. In a way China is not truly collectivist because its essence is corrupted, as also exemplified by how much they joined the West's game and thus exchanged that energy.
Dowlphwin blah blah blah. How many martial artists have found themselves on the ground looking up at an untrained dude? Lots. Martial arts have devolved into flashy non contact crap. 20 years in the military has taught me the difference between doing “forms” and actually breaking bone. I have faced idiots that thought that having a belt made them an unbeatable warrior. The ability to actually engage in violence has been removed from the training. Demonstrations are incredible when no one is fighting back or resisting.
@@Dowlphin Martial arts used to be combat arts because regimes would restrict practicing tactics of war in order to suppress populations. However, down the line the focus of martial arts strayed away from the martial aspect and only into the artistic aspect. A key indication of this is when martial artists started rejecting firearms. A true follower of martial arts embraces all forms of combat, which is why contrary to common misconception, eastern warriors like the Samurai were quick to pick up and employ firearms. Notably Oda Nobunaga. What most people don't want to recognize is that any real combat art MUST include the implementation/training of a gun, and other common weapons like knives. Without that, it is just a combat sport, you aren't training. The only way you are going to get that as a civilian is if you live in a free country like the USA and some European countries, or if you have prior military/LE service.
The first Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) was Jeet Kune Do which was founded by Bruce Lee. Bruce realized the hard way, that traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu was not effective in the modern world and not effective against other martial arts. He studied many other martial arts and did lots of cross-training with Americans from other martial arts. Bruce eventually created his own form of MMA which he called Jeet Kune Do.
Bruce loved Muhammad Ali's boxing style and trained with anyone he thought he could learn something from. He was considered selfish in this regard. Jeet Kune Do was never a complete system. He was basically saying each fighter has their own skills and personalities, and they should try things, and if they work they could add it to their arsenal as long as it flowed organically with their other moves. After his death people added JKD to their more traditional styles they grew up in.
In what way did he 'learn the hard way'? He never competed in competitions or indeed even fight in bare Knuckle/ streetlight/underground competitions. We do have stories from great fighters, such as Gene lebell, about his actual fighting prowess.
There is real deadly Kung fu out there , I have seen it . But its not something you can find easily . There are a lot of frauds out there its true . Most martial arts are so watered down through comercialization
Look at Mike Tyson’s video announcing his return to boxing. Look at how he spars now in his 50’s. THAT’S what a grand master of a fighting style should be. When one of these kung fu “masters” does a demonstration, I think “Ohh, pretty looking, but probably useless.” When old man Mike Tyson shadow boxes and spars, I think, “Oh. That man could kill me with his bare hands in a real fight.”
Mike Tyson and William Cheung (student of Ip Man) are very close friends. BOTH of their names are on the Wing Chun Monument on display at the Shaolin Temple.
I am a licensed MMA ref and judge for a great many years and for some relatively big names and events. Other than random (as needed) individual state licenses, I am licensed by the largest MMA organization in all 50 states for life (goodness that sounds like a lie ha ha). I've reffed an uncountable amount of fighters over the years as well as trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, wrestling, judo, kick-boxing, Muah Thai, etc from a list of professionally accomplished fighters and we produced a UFC champion (Rampage). I've reffed precious few guys with a kung Fu base, and for good reason...it's simply impractical. I can't possibly count how many little nerdy morons will swear by some old guy somewhere who doesn't compete professionally as though he's some magical mystic who started his training in Hogwarts. I enjoy kung fu in various forms as it is fun to watch. There is nothing I would rather see in movies. Wushu in particular is often used because of its flamboyancy (much of it was incorporated into Darth Maul for example). It's also an incredibly ineffective martial art. As far as actual fighting goes, the overwhelming majority of things taught in Kung-Fu are utterly ridiculous. With a great many of them, you would be equally suited with a black belt in tap dancing. Even Bruce Lee was highly critical of many forms of kung fu that look fantastic but are just awful. Boxing is called the sweet science for a reason. There are angles. There is weight distribution. A particular stance is given for reasons. And keep your chin down. Look at many of these Kung Fu stances. Look at the dramatic ways many of them attempt to strike. Or how much power or timing is sometimes lost by keeping within a particular style. I'm not saying there is nothing good in one form of kung fu or another. Karate, which of course is not a type of kung fu, is at least effective in being evasive, but I'd be hard-pressed to find anyting else that's good in it. Taekwondo has good high kicks. I mean we can talk forever. But a good form of kickboxing or Muay Thai is significantly more scientific and they have a proven track record. Once mixed martial arts became mainstream and spread across the globe, all of this Kung-Fu nonsense was exposed. Yes I know there are so many people that would tell me how wrong I am. I would ask them to show me one highly effective professional fighter who sticks solely to his Kung Fu and doesn't incorporate jiu-Jitsu or another form of striking or this or that. It just simply doesn't exist. It doesn't. And I've heard every excuse under the sun as to why this person or that person is best but doesn't compete for (insert random cop-out reasoning here). I personally really love watching a good kung fu movie. As a little kid in the 80s, me and one of my brothers watched Kung Fu theater every day. I love that stuff. I don't want to see effective martial arts in those kinds of movies because it's not nearly as fun to watch. Donnie Yen did one movie in particular where they used actual effective martial arts. He said he always wanted to do it. I watched it and I enjoyed it but not nearly as much as watching him do his typical over-the-top stuff. I've even known a couple of proper mixed martial artists who wanted to learn some form of crazy Kung Fu just for the sheer fun of it. And that's cool. But this whole Kung Fu thing has been the biggest farce. As an actual fighting style, its an absolute joke. It cant be overstated. Its childish nonsense. Anyone can say anything, but the proof is in the pudding isn't it. For sure they tried. And we're promptly embarrassed because they were fighting like an idiot. There is a science to fighting. That science is not a respecter of culture or desire, or an active imagination. Having said that...ok youtube...come at me nerds! :P
I second that. Did Krav Maga. Where there is one single goal: „neutralize“ your opponents (and get out alive). Not much culture, not much tradition. No nonsense. Just what works the most effective under any circumstances. Kung Fu is great as a training, a mental attitude etc. I traveled china and have seen a lot of Kung Fu trainings. Impressive to watch. But in a real self defense situation I prefer Krav Maga.
Zero-Kiryu, I appreciate your commentary. You highlight the cinematic quality of Kung Fu. Problem with trying to pit Kung Fu against MMA and other hand-to-hand styles is that a lot of traditional Kung Fu styles were not focused on hand-to-hand. The unarmed portion in a lot of Kung Fu is mainly a way to learn to move well, generate a lot of power, connect to the ground, etc - in order to get ready to study the weapons, which are the real point. There is always some training around unarmed combat, but a lot of what you study has to do with learning to move and strike when armed.
Yes, that is the irony. Actually having a martial origin leading to kung fu being less effective against combat sports. For example, MMA style covering works better against a barrage of punches than trying to flail around blocking them all. But just covering against a sword, spear, or staff is a bad idea. But of course the other aspect is the diluted intensity training in many traditional martial arts. In fact that would be most of the problem.
I had the unbelievable luck of being able to study Tai Chi with a real Chinese Grandmaster, I mean a real Grandmaster. His body was like steal. One time he said "here hold my arm", which seemed a bit strange but he held out his arm and I put my hand under it, as he relaxed and dropped the full weight of his arm into my hand I almost lurched forward - his arm was so heavy it was shocking! I was not expecting it. Of course he knew what I was going to experience. He had often said Tai Chi makes your bones heavier. And he proved it that day. He was almost 80 years old and had been doing standing exercises probably a couple hours a day for many many years. That has the same effect as weight bearing exercises which science now knows increases bone density. Based on how heavy his arm was his bone density must have been through the roof. He did not have big bulky muscles at all, he looked like a little old Chinese guy. People ask or say "maybe he was pushing down", no he was not, you can tell if someone is doing that. At that time I had been doing some Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and studying Shiatsu and Chinese Medicine. I knew about what the average weight of a person's arm was. This was way way beyond that - shocking isn't a strong enough word for what it felt like. But that is the secret to accumulating Chi, it's in the bones not the muscles. And his bones were like iron! I think it would be hard to hurt him. I knew 2 black belts who went to see him. He told them to kick and punch him as hard as they could, they did, he just stood there laughing. His name was John Chung Li if you care to look him up. There was a Vimeo video of him doing his form with was a combination of styles, Tai Chi and Li hua ba fa, I'm sure I am not spelling it right! :)
Guess what, Kung Fu I originally came from India. Bodhi Dharma, a king from South India took Kung fu to China. There is still a statues of Bodhi Dharma in shaolin temples.
Did you even watch the video? The so called “Kung fu masters” challenging mma fighters are frauds. Not real mma fighters. In realty you probably don’t understand martial arts if you did you’d know MMA is a mixed martial art and actually includes elements of Kung fu.
@@teacherfromthejungles6671 the first one that comes to mind is Anderson Silva. He actually trains wing chun but a modified version. But yeah, kung fu can be implemented in MMA, especially the basics.
When I was in my early 20s I had grown up in a very rough area and had more actual real street fights then I could count. I was always a huge fan of martial arts, hell I was a big fan of the movie blood sport. I got into a disagreement with a guy older then me and he was known for being a black belt. When it came to blows I beat him silly. I seriously questioned his credentials as a black belt. I found out he truly was a black belt in karate but he had only ever been in a few real fights. Nothing beats experience in real street fights. He stood no chance at all
Karate is made of two parts: kata (the choreographic part) and tatakae (the fighting). The exams to take a new belt are actually mostly kata and all the "fighting" is reduced to "perform x position and hit the targeted part correctly". There's no need to take down the opponent. Karate has no practical use.
That also speaks more to Karate than someone who spars Muay Thai or Dutch Kickboxing. Some arts are frankly ineffective against actual combat, street or not
Back in the early 80s I watched a world freestyle martial arts full contact championship. *None* of Kung Fu artists lasted 15 seconds. Many were taken out with just one punch or kick.

Understatement of the century.
@Dig Byck that's sad but true. You need to keep your head down in Chinese society.
@Dig Byck the Kung Fu Frauds were the people who talked trash and challenged the MMA guy, so he was just defending himself and his reputation. The Chinese Govt punished a guy for self defense.
That's what happens if you have a lot of power, you can super easily fuck someone's life up
Winston emphasizes how the implied message is that if you play by the CPCs rules, life will go smoothly, otherwise you will suffer.

@@divagaciones1628 Fair enough ^.^
as useful certain techniques may be it's always more important to train the foundations before the techniques.
There are two interpretations that I'm split between:
Something I heard a long time ago was “Don’t believe your own PR” and it is very true.
Taco Of Love that , and if you don’t train to fight then stay out of fights
Well said Douglas. Well Said.
Okay but as Bruce Lee also stated
Combat as it is should be taken like a dance between you and your opponent but a very serious dance.
Also, Bruce understood you had to spar and fight in order to improve in your art.
Bruce was so ahead of his time, he actually called these kung Kung fu systems/performances "the classical mess".
Many Real Chinese kung fu was eliminated and was forbidden to practice during the cultural revolution.
I was wondering about the revolution with religions being banned.

Sadly, such nonsense isn't unique to the Chinese "martial artists". Akido is just as phony. The fraud has gotten so bad, people teach it like it's real.
I remember the advice of more than one fighter, “Any serious fight quickly turns into grappling.”
Once you hit a grappler hard enough in the face, their strength will quickly drain away. You just have to be bolder... there's nothing really bold about using grappling skills to take someone down and hold him.
Tyson actually said Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the nose.

Martial arts are done “with” someone. Combat arts are done “to” someone.
You got that wrong it should read combat sport, martial arts are just that an art form to entertain people, MMA or combat sports in general is taught to kill someone
a martial art isn't really martial at all if it isn't about combat
"MMA" as a concept has been around since Ancient Greece times. Bruce Lee popularised it and is the godfather of the MMA we know today.
@@SwaggMessiah69Oh I didn’t realize Bruce Lee also wrestled. Looking forward to you sharing a few links to videos of him wrestling. Thanks in advance!

Nothing beats experience in real street fights. He stood no chance at all
Full contact sparring with a resisting partner is very essential for combat effectiveness.
