    People call the squat the "king of exercises." But it's more than that. It's the first exercise you ever did-and nobody even taught you how. You invented it-we all did-deep in our early childhood, the first time we needed to pick up a toy off the ground. Back then, we didn't know the movement even had a name, but we knew we could rest comfortably in it for minutes on end.
    Some of us stop squatting as we grow up. In some cultures, it remains the default rest position, and you'll see people casually squatting as they wait on street corners and train platforms. But others take the squat dead seriously, putting immense loads on their backs. They squat to break records, or to build superhuman legs. At its best, the motion is the same as when you were a child. You sit down; you stand back up.
    As an exercise, the weighted squat has its own unique history which predates bodybuilding, powerlifting, and even Olympic weightlifting. Its roots stretch back to the days when weight training was the domain of professional strongmen, who performed incredible feats of strength in front of wide-eyed audiences.
    THE STRONGMAN EUGENE SANDOW
    You probably don't associate the most famous Victorian strongman with squatting. He is better known today as the first bodybuilder, as well as the inspiration for the Sandow trophy given annually to the winner of the Mr. Olympia title. His legendary physique was the product of a life spent putting heavy dumbbells, barbells, and kettlebells overhead using a wide range of presses, jerks, and snatches.
    But legs like his weren't the product of overhead lifts alone. In his landmark 1894 book "Sandow's System of Physical Culture," he also made one of the earliest recommendations in print to use squatting movements for quadriceps development. In a description that holds true today, he wrote, "By bending the knees, dip the body in a vertical line to the heels, keeping the back straight and the chin drawn in. Recover and repeat the movement until the muscles ache."
    THE INNOVATOR HENRY "MILO" STEINBORN
    German-born strongman and wrestler Henry Steinborn was perhaps the world's first squat specialist, at a time when heavy squats were still relatively unknown. He could also more than hold his own in more famous lifts-including a 375-pound clean and jerk that stood unmatched for years-but today he is best known for a squat variation that came to be known as the "Steinborn lift."
    Steinborn's namesake movement is an unassisted heavy squat wherein the lifter tips a loaded barbell onto his back, squats for reps, and then tips the barbell back over onto one side. Steinborn lifted over 500 pounds in this manner for reps, a number unthinkable in today's gym. Steinborn remained an active exhibition lifter and wrestler for decades, but his major contribution was to cement the barbell squat as a staple of strength and power training.

    When I was a kid about 15 years old a strength coach told me, "a house is only as good as its foundation." I have never ever forgotten it. That was some very sound advice that applies to many things in life.

      "Also dont build a shack on top of a solid foundation, or else what's the point?"
      There is the idea of living within your means and the tiny house movement in relation to it and next to this is the rhetorical question essentially asking if you're building a shack, what's the point?

      Not at the gyms by me. We have an old basement dungeon gym in the area. Chalk, racks, rust everywhere. I moved by another gym I went to had a ton of bodybuilders and that rack was always taken. I started lifting at a time where I was the only kid in the gym. The guys would tell me I'm training with them. Learned you always start with your compounds first. Rarely ever used machines or cables. Maybe here and there for a finishing movement.

    I tore all of my major ligaments in my knee aged 21. I had twig legs back then. I've started squatting for a couple months now, and the physical benefits are life changing. I remember limping around at a snails pace with my head down, now I squat 315lbs with my head up and proud. Squats are truly the best exercise!

      He didn't state a timeframe. He said at 21 he tore his knee ligaments. It might have been years between then and squatting 315. And Peter Caires, look into the new method out there for reattaching/regrowing ACL injuries using adult stem cells. It's 100 percent.

    • @fitnessfan1529
      @fitnessfan1529 8 лет назад +70

      +Joseph Cho The bench press is a compound exercise, thus it does not work the chest only, but the triceps, the shoulders, even the upper back if done correctly. The overhead press also works more muscles then just the shoulders and the triceps.

      David Torres I would say you get sore because of weak ligaments and tendons. That is directly related not doing high volume. In fact, Louie Simmons (the godfather of powerlifting) has his gym (Westside barbell) do 200 reps a day of triceps extension and/or leg curls to build the ligaments and tendons. They never have injuries and have one of the strongest gym's in the world.

    Paul Anderson was my favorite at the squat. He dug a hole in his yard to stand in and left the barbell on the ground level, to make it easy to workout legs every other day by himself with weights up to 1,000 lbs. He loved the squat and was great at it.

    Anyone here actually squat every day? What kind of volume, % of 1rm, and long-term progression do you do and do you do them before or after your other lifts?

    • @bigbendstrength
      @bigbendstrength 8 лет назад +2

      I squat everyday except Sunday, because my gym isn't open. Every day is a slight variation, I do front squats with a pause, without a pause, with and without a belt, back squats with and without a pause. Every day is a one rep max or near a max. I feel like this would not be sustainable without a high calorie intake, I personally eat 4000-5000 calories a day and I don't have any injuries or pain. My squat max has gone from 255 to 300, my deadlift has gone from 317 to 355, sumo deadlift from 355 to 405, and I pr'd my split jerk after not doing it in 2 months. I highly reccomend this program

    • @Lavabug

      Brian Chambers Is this kg or lb? I've been squatting daily for 3 weeks now and I'm hitting 330lb as a daily minimum, and 345-350lb more and more often, soon to catch up to my 370 lifetime best. I am chasing that 405lb and think it might be in reach in a few more weeks.
      I don't eat over 3000 cal typically.

    • @bigbendstrength

      +Lavabug lbs, this is the first year I've ever squatted. I would reccomend eating more food, it might be your game changer

    • @Lavabug

      Brian Chambers I am eating enough to maintain bodyweight at husky 205lb (was 170lb 2-2.5 years ago), getting fatter isn't going to help me much at this point, my lean bodyweight is pretty static (I am done with noob gains).

      Right! It's been proven that improving your squats does not increase your arm size.

    • @timsteinhauser5652
      @timsteinhauser5652 7 лет назад +4

      By whom was that "proven" ? A growing muscle sends out hormones to signalize the body that he needs energy and amino acids these hormones are part local (like 95% only for the muscle sending the signal hormones) and part global, wich means that all of your other muscles will grow too ( only a very slight bit tho). With enough time spend you can get bigger arms ( and especially more strengh in them) by doing only squats.

      @tensedone595 7 лет назад

      yup I think Cyr challenged Sandow

    • @typedeaf
      @typedeaf 7 лет назад +2

      If you weigh 350lbs, lifting your body weight isn't impressive. Cyr has a gut like he is preparing for winter hibernation, and he has a double chin. His body shape is a circle. If Cyr went to the same body fat as Sandow, the playing field would be even and Cyr would lose significant strength.

    • @jonlanier_
      @jonlanier_ 7 лет назад

      typedeaf Oh Wahhhhhhhh! Cyr was the strongest man of his day and Sandow tried everything to say he wasn't. I could careless about his shape anymore than I do Brian Shaw.

    • @typedeaf
      @typedeaf 7 лет назад +1

      And I am telling you that comparing a fat mans lifts to a skinny mans lifts isn't an equal comparison. Everyone knows that when you bulk you gain strength, and when you cut, you lose it. So strength is relative to size, and specifically body fat.

    • @jonlanier_
      @jonlanier_ 7 лет назад

      typedeaf I'm telling you that Sandow tried to make the world think he was stronger than Cyr... sheer strength, nothing to do with size relatiivity. He was stupid and egotistical.
