I already rented a Cruise America with 2 little ones ages 3 and 1, the older one facing forward and the younger one rear facing. But I put them one forward, just like your forward facing car seat, and the other one on the other bench, facing the other car seat, which is still rear facing for the direction of the car.
Could you explain more why you said that if you transfer the car seat which is rear facing in the same position to the other side, it wouldn’t be rear facing?
I’m just curious because we are renting a Cruise America RV again this year and wanted to make sure if I put the car seats correctly the last time.

Thanks for the question. I think the "rear" in rear-facing refers to the rear of the vehicle. So when you install a car seat in rear-facing position in a passenger car, the baby faces the rear of the vehicle. Now, if you install the car seat to the "rear-facing" bench on an RV in rear-facing position, the baby faces the front of the RV. If it's still unclear, think what your kid would look at, front or rear. Now, why does this matter? I think it's probably because when a baby faces rear, when we slam on the brake, the baby just leans against the back support of the car seat. When the baby faces the front and we slam on the brake, the head will move forward and downward without any support.
As confusing as it may sound, when baby in a rear-facing car seat actually faces the front of a vehicle, it becomes a front-facing car seat.

I read your comment again. I think you did the right thing because you said the kid actually faced the rear of the vehicle.

@@ratherelevated yes, at the moment I thought: ok, so if I place her in a rear facing seat, but forward facing, she would still be rear facing in the vehicle. But then I saw the links that you put on this video and realized that they both were seated unsafely. I still rear face both of them on my car, so I didn't know how to properly install a car seat facing forward. I didn't know that I had to use the top tether, so I didn't do on any of the car seats on the RV. And I realized that the Cruise America RV had a top tether anchor on the back of the seat facing forward, but not on the one facing the back. So you can actually face forward both car seats on the forward facing seat, but you can't install any car seat on the rear facing seat. If that makes sense. You can't instal them forward facing because it hasn't the top tether anchor. And you can't put it rear facing, because as you said, it would be forward facing the vehicle.

Now what I'm doing is putting both car seats one next to the other on the forward facing bench. But I can do it now because they are 4 and 2. Last year they where 3 and 1, and the one year old couldn't be facing forward. I've heard that some people use the driver's cabin to put rear facing car seats, and they need to deactivate the airbags in order to be safe.

Why make the video. The whole point behind people looking at the video is to find out how you did it not to be told. Sorry I can’t show you you can just see I done it.

You definitely have a good point. I think it'd be much better if I can record the process of installing the car seats. There are a few reasons why I didn't do it.
      1. It was always a long trial-and-error process where I installed them on my own. It's hard to make a video at the same time.
      2. It was always an after-thought. After I installed the car seat well for a trip, I'd think oh, it's good to share this with people on the Internet.
We found it was not easy to find information on car seats on RVs. There is some value to show people that you can actually get it done to some degree.
I made this second one because I made a similar one (ruclips.net/video/gRLLpik6wrM/видео.htmlsi=lbPywXj6quFhACz1) and some people thought it was very
helpful. I also left some text in a rather popular blog post on car seats at ratherelevated.blogspot.com/2021/04/family-rv-trip-and-tips.html.
Again, I definitely see where you are coming from. And you are 100% correct that had I shown people the actually process of installation, it'd be
10x more helpful and the video would have done much better. If there is a next time, I will try to do that. Thanks for your feedback.

pretty sure you install it the same way you would in a car. Just move the pads and you'll see the anchors and the belts.

Does the table go up with the rear facing car seat?

    • @ratherelevated
      @ratherelevated  5 месяцев назад

I think it doesn't. When we had only a base and a front facing car seat, it didn't come up easily already. See ruclips.net/video/gRLLpik6wrM/видео.html. We ended up leaving it down and using it as a shorter table.
