  • I have owned my Traeger Grill for more than 6 months now. We've cooked everything from brisket to pork butt, chili to apple crisp, and turkey to twice-baked potatoes. Why did I buy a Traeger and would I do it again? What are the pros and cons of my Pro series grill?

    I bought my Traeger PRO 22 from Costco over a week ago and so far I love it. I did run into a problem with error code LER (too low temperature reading) but my issue was that I was not leaving the lid open when first firing up the grill. Since then, I now leave the top open and let it run for a good 5 min on smoke before upping the temperature= problem solved! Coming from using a propane grill for the past decade, cooking on the Traeger has given "life" to my food and the taste is fantastic. Even my wife has complemented me on my cooking which is a rare thing.😂 Great video!!

      @@morganbaxter8793 For my uses, it's been fine. I bought the additional upper rack for $20 on Amazon and it's added additional space for food. I've cooked 3 rack of ribs on the lower rack and threw some corn on cob and asparagus on the top rack. It fits a good amount of food

    I've had mine for two and a half years now. I would not sell it today for what I paid for it, I love it that much. I will say make sure you vacuum the fire pot after long cooks or after a dozen normal cooks. I had the fire go out in the middle of a brisket cook and found the fire pot full of ash which snuffed out the fire. Vacuumed it and restarted with zero problems. Also if the pot gets ashed up the grill will not get above 400. It takes 5 minutes to clean it out and refoil the drip pan.

    Was @ Costco in Landover MD. Ran in2 Brand Ambassador George Hunter. We spoke 4 about 30 or abit more minutes. He was thorough, professional & spoke w/passion (not just a sales man). I was partially sold. Yet, having my own grill design and the fact that I was not out grill shopping - I abstained from purchasing. We do not have a grill @ this time but I didn't want 2 show up w/a $1,000+ grill that I knew nothing about & have wifey gapping 4 air. Since meeting George I've spent hrs reviewing & familiarizing myself w/the Traeger. I've been speaking 2 my 'cook buddies' & wife. I'm sold. The Traeger will b my next cooking platform - Thanks George.

    I have the exact same model and love it. Mine doesn't very as much on temperature, maybe +/- 10 degrees. Been trying to get a hold of Traeger as there's a discrepancy between the owners manual and cook book. One says to start it on smoke with the lid closed and the other say to start on smoke with the lid open. Been difficult to get a hold of Traeger lately.

    We purchased sofa set from a large furniture store and received a gift card that covered almost all of cost of the Pro 22 minus $100. And of course I got one today. Now I own 5 different types of grills. I guess that’s enough.

    • @TheBarbecueLab

      I wasn't sure when I first tried a pellet grill either, but I have to say that the pellet grill is what we use 2-3 nights a week simply because of the convenience and control. Since I can just set a temperature, fill it with pellets, put some meat on and get back to work, we have bbq on a weeknight. If I had to rely on my offset or even a kamado, I'd have to check in way more often and it would affect work productivity. Adding a pellet grill to the arsenal has been purely for convenience, but we love the ability to get long cooks accomplished during work. That's why we love pellet cooking.

      @@TheBarbecueLab that makes a lot of sense lol, I'll do my best to keep an open mind once my official hunt for a new grill/ smoker begins! also, would you recommend anyway combo grills? like, I like the idea, but most of the ones I've seen seem to have pretty small cooking areas as a compromise for having a gas and charcoal grill, with the offset smoker

    • @TheBarbecueLab
      @TheBarbecueLab  4 года назад +2

      I have a combo grill, and you're totally spot on. It's nice to have both options in a single unit, but at the end of the day it's a really small version of both and they limit what you can do on combos. I'd much rather have two individual grills of the right size personally.

      Glad it was helpful! We love our pellet smokers. We’ve had 3-4 of them, super cheap to high end and all performed admirably. Lower cost usually meant occasional hiccups during a cook and higher temperature fluctuations, but they did a good job. For the most part, higher end meant more connectivity, better materials and increased reliability. Best wishes in your search!

    Great video. I want to get into smoking eventually but need to make a grill purchase now. I'll do mostly basic grilling at first (burgers, brats, chicken thighs) instead of extended smoking. Should I get a cheap grill now and purchase a smoker later? Or can I just get a Traeger Pro 22 for all my grilling needs?

    • @TheBarbecueLab
      @TheBarbecueLab  3 года назад +2

      If you do mainly grilling, then I’d buy something you really enjoy grilling on. Whatever your fuel preference, let that drive your purchase. Traeger makes great grills, but they’re a great smoker over a grill any day, especially their older models. Without any access to direct flame, grilling on a Traeger is cooking with radiant heat, so if that is how you like to grill, then a Traeger would be a good solution.

    I have one it's nice and convenient my only problem is the temperature jumps around and in my opinion it doesn't give that real good smokie flavor

    • @TheBarbecueLab
      @TheBarbecueLab  4 года назад

      We have cooked on pellet grills that had massive swings in temperature, and that's not cool. One had +/-50 degrees or more during a cook, and it was just unmanageable, so I hear you. We found this Traeger to be much less prone to huge temp swings. Regarding the smoke flavor, I've used a pellet grill that might as well have been a propane smoker, because there was zero smoke flavor on the meat I cooked. If I'm not going to get smoke flavor, then why am I smoking this again? We tried different pellets, and that particular model just didn't put out smoke flavor. I think the controller was too accurate and didn't let the pellets smoke. On this model, we got some lovely smoke rings and good smoke flavor. It wasn't as deep as the smoke ring from an offset, but for the ease of cooking during the week, it was way better than the oven, that's for sure.

      When you wrap your drip pan in aluminum foil, it brings out some surface rust over time since it's not lubricated with fat and drippings. I could run it without foil, but the cleanup is a whole lot easier with foil.
