Hey, sorry it took me two years to get to your comment. I'm sure you could care less by now! But the answer is that these boards were vacuum pressed on a one-sided mold, a little like ski's and snowboards are manufactured. It was a very cool process!
You could try getting an office cork board they are cheap as or you can go to a cork supplier (I've already looked they are around) but since your comment is 3yrs old probably irrelevant 😅
These boards were manufactured with several layers of cork and fiberglass laminated together. During the lamination process, I installed small pieces of wood just under the cork in the exact spots where I would later need to attach the handles. So the handles were attached to those pieces of wood.
