    Episode 63
    One of surfing's biggest influencers, Mark Cunningham, explains that the keys to body surfing are "know how to swim, have a suit that is going to stay on, kick like hell, and come out of the water smiling..." It's that easy, right?!
    In this episode of Surf Sufficient, another one of body surfing's finest ambassadors, Keith Malloy, gives his take on body surfing's various communities, how to maximize surface tension and planing as well as some tipson how you might approach your next session sans surfboard.

    Wow--I been refining my "technique" and I didn't even know there is this whole body surfing community. I thought I was justa fake surfer and no one does this that I been doing for 30 years. Very,. very cool. I am on west coast of Florida and waves are miniscule compared to this, but I just read about the dangers and I'm gonna be a lot safer now, esp with the diagonal riding. Bless you posting, man!

      Swimsuit is not actually optimal as far as Bodhisurfer in the water experience is concerned, IMHO. Hand planes I found to be useful about 60% of the waves, and a pain in the ass to deal with 75% of the time. Fins essential. Pretty much impossible to come out of the water without feeling cosmic joy of being alive! Happiness is being wet!

    Old style bodysurfing, or outrigger style, didn't use an arms forward planing hand at all. You keep the inboard arm back by your side, perhaps bending at the elbow to plane inside the wave, and the outboard arm can be back by your side or down on the face of the wave. You can make more speed using the outrigger, while a layback is a stall move that gets you higher on the face.

    Do you often keep kicking whilst on the wave or you try to just slide as much as possible ?
    I feel sometimes I do have to keep kicking, maybe to bad weight distribution or low angle of the "soft wave"
    Any tips ?

    • @feedigli
      @feedigli 5 лет назад

      Well, you've gotta keep up with the wave so usually have to keep kicking. Hence, fins. Depends on the waves.

    • @realpatriothawaii5653
      @realpatriothawaii5653 4 года назад +1

      If the waves are big enough you don't need to kick at all.

    • @anotherworldviewispossible
      @anotherworldviewispossible 4 года назад +1

      Sometimes in very soft waves (going straight towards the beach in the mush, say) it can help. At Oceanside California (generally a soft and junky wave for bodysurfing) where long ago they Trademarked the name "World Championships", people often have to do an "underwater re-entry" in the flat spot between outside and inside sections. Something like one, or more, mid-ride "dolphin takeoff"s. During those kicking may be required, certainly - whether in opposing foot directions - or with both legs together like a monofin/dolphin-type kick.
      In decently hollow, powerful and large surf, you should focus on generating speed through planing efficiency, with your hands and body. The better and faster you are - the less of you will be in the water (unless you're stalling/dragging, for more tube-time). Under those circumstances kicking will usually just slow you down, after your takeoff is successful. Your body from your lead hand to the tip of your fins is the rail of your surfboard. A 'floppy' rail, is rarely going to add speed to your craft.

    • @xxxAlain

    • @enzotorres5315
      @enzotorres5315 5 лет назад

      @Ricardo Gomes, well, it all depends on the wave. If you feel like that part of the wave is beginning to break and you are too slow, you might want to kick your legs a bit more, which will then get you to an unbroken part of the wave, however once you are on the wave, the decisions are yours.

      Ricardo Gomes good idea on trying fins, they’re essential for bodysurfing, mostly for getting into the wave. In small waves, it is better to be kicking most of the time, to get the maximum fun out of the wave, however it isn’t always the same for big waves, as they push you much more with their force. Does nobody else (blokes) suffer from having their pills smashed on waves of consequence..? I have pulled off waves of the type shown in the clip because of the discomfort experienced when the tackle is bashing down the face of the wave… Recently I just didn’t want to give up the wave, so I went side on and didn’t have quite as successful a wave… Am thinking of a cricketer’s box. Vipers - Original Rubber style V-7's used to come with pads already glued-in, afixed to the top of the pocket, makes them super snug and comfortable. In the video you can see one rider has an additional (bright neon green) pad around the heel strap - called a "sausage". Those tend to make things even more snug and comfortable.
      The newer generation of Viper "Vectors" are actually made from a soft spaceage plastic - and so getting the glue and neoprene pads to work has been a challenge for most folks, with those models. With those I recommend a soft soled neoprene fin sock - long style in cold water, with a fullsuit - or even a like tennis-sock style that stays below the ankle for warmer water.
      I hope that helps.

    Cheating! Fins and hand boards no good. In S Africa they call it, "body art",or they used to 40 years ago. If you wanna use fins and hand boards,I can dig it. My Dad taught me at Daytona in the 60's. He grew up in daytona and said, "Only hippies use boards to surf". He's right,but he was only teasing.

    Why is this guy talking about bodysurfing? Go ask a bodysurfer--not a sponsored surfer.

      He's a pretty good waterman. They don't really know who the good guys really are - aside from Cunningham. I like Keith, and give him props. He's a surfer who "gets it" - at least enough to make this video, and a decent movie or three, about the sport.
      Without a strong PR team - and industry sponsors looking to promote you...you could be the best bodysurfer on Earth - and still be essentially anonymous... So they go with a guy like Keith - who has name recognition.
