- At Bodhi Surf + Yoga, we love bodysurfing as it helps us teach our students ocean confidence, be playful in the water, and harness those columns of orbiting energy (called waves) in what can be a very healing practice.
This bodysurf tutorial video expands upon our first of the series (what bodysurfing is and its importance for surfers and beach-goers alike) and goes on to explain how to bodysurf the green waves.
There are many components that we cover, including necessary equipment, the physical practice, tips and tricks, and some great visual examples
We hope to inspire more people to learn how to bodysurf. This underrated pastime is accessible, enjoyable and defined by its simplicity!
We’ll see you in the waves.

VIDEO SECTIONS ⏩
00:00 - Introduction with Spencer Dunlap of @bodysurfcollective
00:37 - Streamline warmup in white water: learn how to identify and time your launch to catch and bodysurf a whitewater wave in the streamline position
01:19 - Streamline with equipment: once you master streamline, you can grab a pair of swim fins and even a bodysurf handplane to continue practicing in the whitewater before you swim out into the green waves
01:53 - Kicking out with handboard: a handplane is very helpful when first learning to swim out into the green wave zone - we recommend the Grom Soft Top Handboard made by @slydehandboards
02:39 - Catching green waves with handboard: also a great tool to allow you to kick into the wave and watch over your shoulder as the wave approaches to perfect timing as well as push down on once you catch the wave to see and determine which direction you’d like to go
03:25 - Swimming out with fins: when swimming out into the lineup, swim fins are essential to catching waves and complementing any stroke you may use to get there (the head-up freestyle stroke, breaststroke, or sidestroke)
03:51 - Bodysurfing green waves: the key to getting into green waves without a handplane is timing, and once you master going straight, you can also learn to go left or right (depending on the wave) and ride the face!

But wait! How do i bloody stop??? On a crowded beach that is very important!
Practice duck diving as you are propelled on the wave, and letting the wave carry your body and legs over your head as you tuck your head and do a somersault roll, leaving you behind the wave when you come up to the surface. Just make sure it's deep enough when doing this so you don't injure yourself by hitting sand below!
Yes, that is very important. There are several ways to stop. Hit up our pal Spencer via thebodysurfblog.com/ and I'm sure you'll get a few great answers! More to come soon!
@@teammurdoch head down in shallow waters?
@@SurvivalSquirrel I addressed that in my last sentence. No, if it's shallow then obviously just put feet down and stand up.
