Have you ever body surfed a wave in a Triathlon?
Bodysurfed all the way to T1 they had to mark the swim as a surf instead.
no i have not but the bloke across the road was training for them back in the days used to use a inner tube tied to the pool fence as a tether and i would swim on it for like 10 minutes when i was a kid now i am a fat old man
@@tastytv5241You go man!
😂😂😂
This is crazy. I used to do this all the time as a kid without realizing its an important technique. Its so fun to do! Especially when you catch it right and it gets you ALL the way to shore. So cool!
Body surfing is absolutely a great skill to have. Any surfer who's been out in double overhead waves, had their leash snap and had to swim back to shore, will tell you. Thanks for posting this!
Living only 5 miles from the beach in Florida I have body surfed my whole life. Great tips in this video. My best wave wasn't in Florida though it was surfing at Waikiki in Hawaii. Rode (on a surfboard) over 1/4 of a mile through 3 breaks...life memory.
Odd... Duke Kahamoku told the exact same story about a wave he caught in Waikiki when he was a young man... Awesome Life Memory!!! What "3 breaks" did you surf thru?
Damn. Makes me grateful to be living in Hawaii
Same
This looked like a really fun day of filming! We practice skills like this all the time in Southern California. Great to see some swim content with open water specific info!
Yes!!! I have done it. Born and raised in the Canary Islands. Great tips!! For sure is a useful skill to have.
I can't believe this. Yesterday, I went to a pool with waves and I tried to body surf (spoiler alert: it didn't went well), and today you're posting a video explainning that. Why me?
It didn't went well? Is that an Australian saying?
Yes. No.

because the universe revolves around your needs
I absolutely love this video!! Such an underdeveloped skill but amazing to watch
I loooove body surfing, when I wake up in the mornings I go swim in the ocean and the seals play also body surfing, it is so much fun!
Yes! When open water swing and there are waves, i can't wait to surf one in as it just helps me catch my breath for the Bike and it's just faster.
Those waves are perfect lefty and righties so angling like that when you drop in will give you a longer ride. If you want the fastest way to the beach, you’ll want to drop straight down. A couple of big dolphin kicks right when the wave is breaking will help you catch it.
Agree, learning to time that dolphin kick is so important
perfect???? beuuuuurk
Best bodysurfing experience I've had was at Huntington Beach, CA. There was a regular surfing competition happening because the waves were fantastic. I just found a patch and went the whole day.
I only have two body surfing experiences. My first was in Los Cabo San Lucas, MX (just before a tropical storm hit), and the other was at Virginia Beach, USA. Virginia was a bit better, because the beach wasn’t so abrupt if that makes sense. It’s truly an amazing feeling!
It’s like no other feeling 👋🧄
When the wave becomes white water you should not try to spin the arms. This will cause drag and cause you to slow down and fall off the back of the wave. Take some advise from the Australian Surf lifesavers and put both arms straight out in front , keep your body as straight as possible, head down and kick hard.
Thanks!! Looking forward to using the tips.
Great, let us know how it goes 🏊♀️
body surfing is very instinctive , drift wood can do it. simplest instruction is to position yourself in front of a wave with your hips higher that your shoulders. do it skillfully and modifying behavior to better match the natural wave energy around you becomes a zen like pursuit.
always honor the ocean before going in, as tradition suggests. . this gives you time to look and understand the situation before you go in the water.
I recommend bodysurfing underwater in a streamline for the most speed and efficiency. It offers much lower drag if you can do without a visual.
You can ride the wave straight or at an angle, just like on the surface. Simply hold a streamline and dolphin kick for more speed. Most of the time you can make it to the sand without a single kick.
This is also an easier technique to learn for swimmers familiar with streamlining. As a bonus you get a unique sensation of shooting through water like a torpedo!
it also helps to practice holding your breath, so the brain gets used to the sensation that being underwater and not breathing is not a cause for alarm.
Shout out too all the dawgs who didn't know body surfing was a thing before matt broke his nose.
Amen brother
i remember last year one of the super league races was hugely effected by this.
Are you working towards a surf lifesaving masters comp feature?
Let's get you all qualified to compete for swim, board and maybe surf ski.
Masters comp mid August in Bournemouth...
It'd be great to see some UK comp on screen..
Body surfing is fun in wave pools at Waterparks
I was never taught I learned myself because I have lived and Florida my whole life and I have body surfed back to shore because it’s harder it get to the shore when the tide is receding
Theres a video of charles barclay at the end of a swim it shows just how devistating a body surf can be.... would have been a good idea to show it as an example in this video
Im here to learn cuz i have a major fear of my surfboard snapping ot loosing my leggy in head high plus surf, snapped board once in double overhead in the Shorey but it was wsy yo big i hot stuck n didn't know ehat to do, i goy told to body surf but i can only body surf in water depth i van touch and bout waist height
Please, tell us about your life memory... You, like Duke Kahamoku rode a wave thru 3 breaks at Waikiki, it was also his "life memory" but please tell us, what three breaks did you surf thru? I Mean, it was such an Awesome Life Memory!!! What "3 breaks" did you surf thru?
In my day we called it Belly surfing
What is an achee?
I can do this, this I know, all my trophies tell me so.😋
Go to a surf life saving club - the lifeguard will help teach you and share some of thee tra secrets
Hey kooks. Nobody bodysurfs with effing goggles
Can you ride water?
It's pretty clear these guys dont bodysurf a lot. Just look up videos of people bodysurfing point panics on Oahu.
The pro body surfers really know what they're doing. For us, it's a great speed hack and fun way to spice up the swim. 🙌
Mate theres a guild in my server called waving not drowning i have a feeling somebody was following me where ever i was and i just bodysurfed up the north coast or central coast no safety flags or anything and i swear all the surfers were checking for the waves right next to the rocks of the beach i swear i saw kelly slater there but im a scizophrenic so it may have been a delusion
but i had no board of any kind and i was just bringing in the waves to the shore body surfin had a balll
I was doing one time in beach called beddouza In Morocco wheres the waves height was like 1,5m and then a big wave come and I go with it horizontally straight and then I skipped the wave and I became ahead of that waves and u know if it's a big wave the water infort of it became very shallow like 30 cm the only thing I remember I did is just saying oh shit hhhhh
@0:45…zero equipment?…..nice wetsuits
Yeah sure thanks. Could've posted this a few weeks ago before 1500m of North Sea wind and waves.
But actually helpful👍 was looking for this exact content.
Most welcome - hopefully next time you'll have it nailed 🙂
But my body is curvy and bendable!
um hello
Wasted my time
Wtf
First! :p
"Spinning those arms" is so lame. Awful body surfing in this video.
I body surfed a big ol shore breaker ad a tot felt like getting yeeted into the sand and you can see it right befor it hits
there is ample reason why some call it body whomping, but if you get in sync , it can be a living custom built playground
@@richardelliott8352 oh for sure other times your playing “over or under” and you “over” when you shoulda dived under.
