I was sitting on the beach at Pipeline a few years ago and some old dude wearing speedos walked by me holding a pair of fins. He proceeded to swim out at back door and body surf massive waves. It was really inspiring for me because I'm getting up there in age. The "old dude" turned out to be Mark Cunningham.
I broke my neck surfing at the age of 20, ive been in a wheelchair for 23 years now! My advice is dont dive into shallow water and dont slip off your board head first, i share my story on my channel to raise a bit of awareness...... stay safe and have fun!
Surf safety isn't even usually taught to beginners, which is horrible. While I could learn to bodyboard from very basic instruction from friends and the internet, I only took safety seriously after getting sent head first into a sand bar by a hollow wave. It's often the smaller hollow waves that can really wreck you as they break shallow. Whenever you wipe out, especially going over the falls, tuck your chin, brace your head with your hands and curl up. This will also make you spin more, dissipating energy.
You are teaching things that in many countries lifeguard doens't care, they don't explain to the people even how tô show that you are ok or asking for help. Many of them are selfish and wants to appear like the king of the beach, but the real king is you and some lifeguard that teach people to save their lives. Congratulations
Thank you so much ❤! I’ve been searching for 30 min and here I am and am going to show this video to my family first thing in the morning before we hit the beach, OC, MD. I’m not supper stocked about being out here but you just helped me to feel 95% better and more confident. Rip tides I could not rap my head around and the video they provided was difficult to understand. Ty 😊 I think they could use an update 😊
It always amazes me how so many people underestimate the ocean and how unpredictable it can me. Especially when they get up on rocks and get swept away or go swimming into shore break that they have no experience swimming in.
It's easy to stay out of trouble when you have experience in the ocean? But when you find Jesus, what should one worry (Psalm 23:4, Proverbs 118:6) Speedos, really? Lusts through your flesh sister, won't save you! Do you know your creator? Read your Holy Bible and run to Jesus Christ (John 14:6) a man, who was created by God (Jesus) wearing, 'speedos' won't give you access to heaven.. Only Jesus (God) can..
Budgie Smugglers making a comeback! Classic video. Had a good chuckle when you lost the board shorts (obviously in the shore break) and ended up in the red undies.
Hey i have a big question but I’ve bodyboarded big waves biggest was 8ft at Haleiwa but I’m trying to go pipeline so how to bail out of a wave and how do fall into the ocean without hitting the reef as much as possible?
My dad Taught me all those stuff when I was a little girl...he also taught us that if am tired, out of breath or have a cramp just lay down on your back and to not panick, he also the best way to swim without getting tired is the Indian way, never go against the current and basically to not fight the water. Am use to the sea, I really like swimming but I don't go there anymore....in summer it field with tourists ,they come from the North and don't know how to swim...don't follow people who knows how to swim guys.
It was my first time going into the ocean to swim today and I literally got multiple bruises on my body from being tossed by the waves because I didn’t know how strong the waves were 😢 I was at a “beginner” beach too
Was caught in a rip and realized fast to calm down or drown. I did not even have to ask for help because 2 surfers were watching and came over and saved me. Did I mention I was 18 and in the ocean before life guards were on duty how dumb was that ?
My tips: 1) If in ANY doubt, nevah go out! 2) Learn how to be a verrrry strong swimmer. 3) Yes, ID all rips. Oftentimes, the calmest looking water is a ... rip. 4) Yes, always swim where a lifeguard is on duty. 5) Yes, swim with a buddy, and if you cannot handle strong currents and wave action, then for God's sakes, do not go out past waist level, anywhere in ... Hawaiʻi!
This is the video I was looking for! But quick question, is there hard rip currents that can take you farther if you keep going in the ocean? Or will the waves push you back to shore
You should seriously consider selling this to some airlines, help fund your channel, save some lives and may even #MakeSpeedosFashionableAgain Thanks Koa. And glad you were so present for Billy, that is crazy intense.
Australia has discussed showing beach safety videos on incoming flights. I don't know what came of it. They would have to be really elementary, at least for most viewers. Maybe beach safety 102 for beach people?
I only surf with a orange life jacket on top of me bloody sluggos. I usually surf on a raft with a plastic window so I can check under me for signs of danger. I also do hand signals with me blokin’ mates - like me mum. I have no other mates. I like to practice yelling for help on the beach snd meet other kooks I can play Minecraft with. This video actually saved my life !!
I do not surf. I just like to go into the ocean where the waves do not break and let me moving by the up and down waves. No matter if I go into the ocean or back, when I see a wave I cannot just ride, i.e. breaking in front of me, I just turn to face it and dive right into it. The key is to never let waves hit you from behind because it might smash you to the ground and that can be dangerous. And of course when waves get as high as 2m, I do not swim for I am uncertain if the power of the wave could harm me. Because I do not think my method would work against 5-10m waves, right?
Got caught in a rip current and stupidly gassed myself swimming against it. when i was near total exhaustion i reasoned to try to swim sideways to get away from it then work my way in. at that point i was barely taking breathes and was doggy paddling with my neck craned to keep my chin above water. I was trying to work sideways but kept getting ripped further and further away. then i saw a boat of party people drinking way off shore. i swam toward them and screamed and splashed water in the air to get their attention. They ignored me. I swam all the way to the boat and said i was about to drown. they got me up on board and took me back in. they said they thought i was messing around or showing off or something. WTFFFF. im glad they saved me but they could have made me work a lot less to get to the boat lol. and 5 minutes before all of this i thought i was just going for a quick swim. didnt wanna die that day tbh.
when i get pounded its hard to keep calm because i'm thinking that if i dont come to surface fast i will get beated by the next possible wave and that is scary..What do you think?
If you are fit, calm in water, and have lots of endurance. Is swimming for fun through these waves on these types of beaches, really that bad? Especially swimming out far for fun, maybe to where the surfers are, not 10 miles from shore lol
Rips are so deceiving. They appear to be the calm zone but the calm before the storm they are the eye of the hurricane & will take you out. I know I can float forever on my back but not being in turbulent seas I am left to wonder if the call from the sea will turn out to be my last.

Nothing enhances a mans moose knuckle like a Speedo. It forms a rudder, to help you escape the rip current.
