He doesn't lip sync (allegedly). He did say that in order to reproduce what's on the records in a live setting the way they sound on the records, he uses backing tracks (like the electric organ at the beginning of The Headless Children). Now he may have been relying on some of the backing vocals to get him through that tour (his first in like 5 years) but you're right. His voice has improved and he's less reliant on the backing track.
